MBB Tourney: The essentials. (link - bracket, link - tip times & TV schedule)
+ During his time on CBS, Stanford AD & selection committee chair Muir leaned on "earned their right" to describe a number of entry & seeding decisions, points out that 11 of 32 conferences got multiple bids. Muir also camped for a longer period of time with the media, noted St. John's as the last squad in, UNC Greensboro as the last out. When asked about the influence of the new NET metric, "I think it's important for people to keep in mind the NET is just one tool of many that we use to evaluate teams. Certainly we're spending a lot of time observing what the teams do in competition. I hate to use committee speak, but this is what it is, we're looking at their full body of work throughout the course of the season." More. (link, link); Duke AD & selection committee member White also provided context, noted some student-athlete injuries as a factor for St. John's, calls the difference between Gonzaga & Tennessee as a #1 seed was "razor thin," also, "did teams take advantage of their Q1 & Q2 opportunities?" (link)
+ Here's the full true seeding list. (link)
+ N.C. State AD Yow on the Wolfpack being left out, "Based on the metrics cited...that the NCAA indicated they would use (NET, KenPom, Sagarin, BPI, KPI & SoS) to evaluate team performance, we are disappointed for our student-athletes, coaches and fans that our total body of work was not rewarded with selection to the NCAA Tournament." (link); TCU HC Dixon: "We’re the team that’s probably the most surprised in the country...It’s disappointing...Shocked, but things don’t always go the way that people project or plan." (link)
+ Nike scores 40 partners in the Big Dance, Under Armour with 17 & Adidas at 11. (link)
+ Inside Higher Ed with its annual at the bracket based on APR & GSR. Final Four: Belmont, Baylor, Villanova & Kentucky with the Bruins over the Philly-based Wildcats in the final. (link)
+ Yahoo's Forde & his popular 'Forde Minutes' version for the Tourney. (link)
WBB Tourney: In advance of tonight's 7p selection show, here are the 32 squads which already earned automatic bids. (link); The committee releases its 'Debatable 8,' four of whom will be in the Dance: Arkansas, Auburn, Indiana, Ohio, Princeton, Tennessee, TCU & UCF. Nevada SWA & Selection Committee chair Bennett also mentions "body of work" a couple of times. (link, link); CBS rolled through the Men's bracket in an efficient 36 minutes yesterday. Seton Hall WBB HC Bozzella hopes ESPN does the same tonight for the Women, "No one wants to hear from coaches or see stories about teams until everyone knows who is in and out." (link)
Here's your MBB NIT bracket. 1-seeds: Indiana, UNC Greensboro, Alabama & TCU. (link); CIT match-ups, starting with Quinnipiac-NJIT tonight. (link); And the CBI, which curiously includes a 13-20 squad. (link)
UCLA Associate Professor Mogilner Holmes answers "What Kind of Happiness Do People Value Most?" for the Harvard Business Review. Lots of survey data here, the results of which "reveal that Westerners planning their lives by the day or the hour will likely achieve a different version of happiness than what they themselves believe makes a happy life. We’re all too busy, and we’re driven to turn down opportunities to constantly feel happy." More: "We found that the answer depends on whether people are considering the short pieces of their life or their life overall, and where they’re from. Though the pursuit of happiness is so fundamental as to be called an inalienable right, the particular form of happiness individuals pursue is surprisingly malleable." (link)

HC Notes: Ohio AD Schaus hires Stony Brook HC & former Ohio State AC Boals to take over the Bobcats' MBB program. (link); The Las Vegas Sun's Grimala reports UNLV AD Reed-Francois has funding commitments to pay her next MBB HC between $1.7M - $2.8M annually. Nevada HC Musselman is currently the highest-paid Mountain West HC at $1M base per year. (link); Montana State AD Costello is now on the clock for a new MBB leader. (link); It's official at UMKC as Roos AD Martin will do the same. (link); Alabama AD Byrne & MBB HC Johnson will meet soon to discuss the future of the program. (link); Florida A&M Track & Field HC Moore has resigned. (link)
MBB HC bonus stacks thanks to NCAA Tourney & post-season access: Wichita's Marshall gets an extra $18K for an NIT berth, $30K for Colorado's Boyle for the same opportunity, $2.5K for UNC Greensboro's Miller. Iowa's McCaffery will get a $400K base pay raise, plus a $30K bonus, $300K for Florida State's Hamilton, $125K for Tennessee's Barnes. Lots more from USA Today's Berkowitz. (link)
East Carolina Chancellor Staton "is expected to announce his resignation" today according to The Daily Reflector's Burns. Though the school would not confirm the move, Chief Communication Officer Eppes did say there will be a news release this morning with media availability with Staton at 11:30 a.m. The Carolina Journal obtained the announcement, which comes ahead of Thursday's upcoming meeting of the UNC Board of Governors when a new slate of trustees is expected to be named: "Catherine [Staton’s spouse] and I are very grateful for our time at ECU. We have enjoyed every moment working with our inspiring students and world-class faculty and staff. As we prepare for this transition in leadership, we remain committed to the idea we arrived with — ECU’s future is full of promise. There are no limits to what ECU can attain in service to the east, North Carolina, our nation, and our world and we look forward to following the progress of this great university in the years to come." Staton plans to leave May 3, but will stay on in an advisory capacity until June 30. (link)
Colorado State selects its first female prez in current West Virginia Provost/VP for Academic Affairs McConnell, who says she is excited to bring her passion to Fort Collins and to "help continue the thriving spirit that created this university and is still evident today." Start date of July 1, pending board approval, as outgoing CSU Prez Frank transitions to his full-time role as chancellor. (link)
Outgoing South Carolina Prez Pastides provides some insights from SEC meetings at last week's MBB Tournament in Nashville. An interesting comment on the league's TV revenues, "Let me be clear that the athletic viewership is not dying, people are just shifting to digital providers, as you well know, like HULU and many others. In turn, HULU is buying our programming, so they’re subcontracting to ESPN and CBS, both of whom own our programming. We’re getting the same amount of money. In fact, were anticipating increases to our revenue coming from television, but it’s just not coming from traditional outlets anymore. It’s growing on the digital platform." Pastides also says he & his peers voted to support a four-team College Football Playoff format for student-athlete wellness reasons, will continue studying potential FB scheduling changes & support the move to shorter FB overtime periods. (link)
1.Question's @TaiMBrown catches up with Utah State sociology professor Glass to discuss her 'Glass Cliff' framework. Of note: "Glass discusses her research on hiring head coaches in NCAA Division I Men's Basketball and CEOs in Fortune 500 companies, which found that women and people of color are  more likely to be appointed to leadership positions when an organization is at risk to fail." More Glass: "When trying to diversify your staff, make sure you rely on objective evaluation criteria when hiring. […] We all trust our gut. The problem is when we trust our gut, we tend to see the world through our own assumptions, biases, and stereotypes. […] Organizations should clearly define what they mean by the word 'fit' because what you mean by fit may not be what I mean by fit." (link)
Texas A&M will host a first-of-its-kind leadership experience March 31-April 3.
