Special Event at 62nd Session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs
Last week on the first day of the 62nd Session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs, a special event, Evidence-based Treatment and Therapeutic Communities as an Integral Part of the Health System, was organized by the Governments of Greece and Spain, the Therapy Center for Dependent Individuals-KETHEA, Association Proyecto Hombre, the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Health experts push to decriminialize addiction treatment drug buprenorphine
The House Judiciary Committee has approved legislation decriminalizing possession of buprenorphine. But some law enforcement officials say non-prescribed use of the drug, which is used to treat opioid use disorder, should remain a crime.
It’s been six years since Scott Pavek stopped using opioids. But he wanted out of his addiction long before he was able to get clean. “I just wanted … some relief from the cycle of using opioids, getting sick, finding ways to acquire more, and then doing the same thing over again,” Pavek said in an interview recently.
Pavek said he was able to find that relief in a drug called buprenorphine. It’s a long-acting opioid that’s far less powerful than heroin or fentanyl. And it allows people with substance use disorder to stave off the symptoms of withdrawal. Read more
Quality rating for addiction treatment to be piloted in five states
Shatterproof, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the devastation addiction causes families, recently announced that they are building a rating system of addiction treatment programs.
After releasing the National Principles of Care for substance use disorder treatment one year ago, the organization will now measure whether addiction treatment programs are delivering care that aligns with these evidence-based best practices. The information will be made publicly available to those searching for high-quality addiction treatment, as well as to public and private payers, states, and referral sources. This tool will bring transparency and credibility to the addiction treatment system and align market forces with high-quality care. Read more

Treatment Communities of America (TCA) will hold its Spring Meeting on 18-19 June, 2019 at the Liaison Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
The European Federation of Therapeutic Communities (EFTC) will hold its 17th Annual Meeting from Sept. 19-20 in Thessaloniki, Greece.
