This Week In and Around the Meeting House

March 18 - 24, 2019
The South Church Preservation Fund, with support from the Community Preservation Fund and the Town of Nantucket, is restoring the windows in the sanctuary. The historic sashes will be refurbished, and a dozen poor-condition sashes from the 1960s will be replaced. The sashes will all be glazed with antique or restoration glass (roughly one third of the panes currently are modern flat glass). The South side will be done this Winter.

In the photo the sashes to be refurbished are being removed and the new sashes are being fitted. The plywood will be replaced with refurbished sashes before we go upstairs for the summer.

Andrew Bennett and his crew worked in early March to size and groove the new sashes, remove sashes, and plywood over. Heritage Restoration, Inc in Providence RI is working to repair the sashes and should be finished by early May with installation following, ideally in time for our return to the upstairs sanctuary Memorial Day Weekend and for the Nantucket high School Baccalaureate June 7th.

Are you doing something that reflects one of our Seven Principles? Send us a photo for a chance to be featured in our Monday E-Blast!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Neighborhood Project: The Next screening of the Neighborhood Project will be Monday, March 18, 5-7:30pm. Join us for a pot luck, provocative 30-minute movie and creative discussion. The theme of this month’s movie is “Black & White.”

Staged Reading: Friday, March 29th at Bennett Hall, 7 pm. Featuring Meeting House members Paul Connors and Joanne Polster

Help Wanted: A congregant to volunteer to research, design, source, install, and maintain a Hearing Loop system in Hendrix Hall. We already have a similar system in the sanctuary. It is of use to some hearing aid users and those who use the personal amplifiers with headphones. The necessary loop wire is already installed under the rug in Hendrix Hall, but we need the rest of the system, and someone to manage the whole project. Please direct any questions to Paul@PLPDD.com.

Congregational Growth Workshop: Hilary Allen, New England region Innovation and Growth consultant, will visit us on Friday, March 29. Hilary will lead two "Activity Sessions" on the topic of Congregational Growth. One session will be 3:30PM - 5:15 and the other 5:30 - 7:15. All Members and Friends are welcome to either or both sessions. For more information: Paul@PLPDD.com

Genderqueer: The Practice of Beloved Community: beginning Tuesday April 9th and running every Tuesday for 6 weeks until May 13th (except week 2 which will be Thursday the 18th) from 5-6:30pm at the UU Meeting House, 11 Orange Street, facilitated by Rev. Linda Simmons. This series is based on the video presentations on transgender inclusion by Rev. Mykal Slack and Zr. Alex Kapitan. We will watch the presentations, engage assigned readings and consider the practice of beloved community. This class will offer information and the opportunity to be transformed as we move into a practice of welcome that has room for all of us.

This Week's Sermon:
 "Out From Behind the Pulpit"
Rev. Linda Simmons

This Sunday, Rev. Linda will be literally out from behind the pulpit as she tells the story of her experiences with the migrants in Tijuana from all over the world that she met and learned to open her heart to. This sermon will also include reflections on the comfort zone, risk taking and imagination. Join us for a soulfilled service of storytelling, Gary’s photographs, music and poetry!

We are part of a web of all existence. And as human beings, we have a special responsibility to look out for dangers to the Earth. What do you believe, is a problem facing our planet right now? Lets speak out! There are many different ways to help affect change, and making art for awareness is one of them. That's why we're going to go big, bold, and beautiful this Sunday in the medium of textiles! Special mohairs, silks, and other felting yarns in all the colors of nature have been collected just for you. Learn how a "free form" tangle of string, can become a beautiful work of art. With the project you create, you'll be reminding others of a wonder in nature--whether land, sky, or sea--that is worth protecting.
