Thursday, March 21st, 2019 7pm- 9pm
Uvic MacLauren Bldg, Room D-288
The Victoria area is home to the highest diversity of vascular plants in BC, but this diversity isn’t always apparent in our natural areas. A lot of native plants are hiding in plain sight, while others are in decline or have already disappeared. What sorts of factors have resulted in such a high diversity of native plants, and what kinds of factors threaten this diversity? Are there species missing from our local parks and if so, how can we know which ones? For more info, click here.
Gardening for Garry Oak Ecosystems
Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 1 pm- 3 pm
Compost Education Centre
Over the last 10,000 years Victoria’s dry climate and Indigenous land management activities have resulted in a unique array of plant species. Lucky for us, many of these are well-suited to home gardens and some are even drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and edible!
Participants will gain a better understanding of how gardening with native plants can help maintain local biodiversity, including the wildlife that depends on our native flora. This workshop will also give an overview of the great potential Victoria has in turning lawned areas to wildflower meadows. For more info, click here.
