Share Your UAB Memories at Sterne Library
As part of UAB's 50th anniversary celebration, we invite you to come share your UAB memories in the portable sound booth at Sterne Library. Bring someone special and record your story. For more information and to reserve a recording time, please visit the UAB 50 website. Also, keep your eyes peeled this summer for a companion display at Sterne Library marking 50 years of UAB.
Document Delivery Service
The UAB Libraries are excited to announce the expansion of document delivery services to the entire UAB campus. The document delivery service allows UAB faculty, staff, and students to request a copy of any journal article or book chapter from the UAB Libraries’ print collections housed at Sterne Library, Lister Hill Library, or the 801 Building. The requested articles or book chapters will be scanned by the libraries’ interlibrary loan staff and delivered electronically, in most cases within 24 – 48 hours, to the user. To request an article or book chapter, users will submit a normal interlibrary loan request. It’s that simple. There is nothing new to learn or do. This new service complements the libraries’ recent launch of Rapid ILL which electronically delivers articles and book chapters not owned by UAB Libraries within 12 – 24 hours. Feel free to contact Eddie Luster (eluster@uab.edu) with any questions or comments about document delivery or interlibrary loan.

The Virtual Reality Studio is now piloting limited hours of 12:00-6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Visit the Research Guide to learn more about VR workstation offerings, VR information sources, studio guidelines, reserving a workstation online, and additional information about VR at UAB Libraries.

Exhibit Features Diseases that Shaped History
Scourge: Diseases That Shaped History is an exhibit curated by the four fall semester UAB Art History Capstone students of Assistant Professor of Art History, Noa Turel. Students Kelsey Jones, Oakleigh Pinson, Tina Ruggieri, and Brooklynne Todd created the exhibit using historical books and artifacts, all of which are held within the collections of the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences and the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library. It is on display on the 3rd floor of Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences until May 31, 2019.
Witchcraft Display at Sterne Library
On display at Mervyn H. Sterne Library, Witchcraft, Women & the Healing Arts in the Early Modern Period brings together imagery and reprints from the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library, as well as books from Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences and Sterne Library. Various topics covered include accusations of witchcraft against midwives and other folk healers, supernatural themes of alchemy and astrology found in academic medicine of the time, as well as the possibility that ergot poisoning contributed to the mass hysteria surrounding the Salem witch trials. Contemporary conceptions of witchcraft, its practices and traditions, are also addressed.
Through the ages, the practices that came to be associated with witchcraft provided a connection to both the natural and the supernatural forces of the universe. However, beginning in the 13th century, witches became identified as those possessed by or in allegiance with the Devil or demons. Between the late 1400s and the mid-1700s, circulating guidebooks on how to properly identify witches, as well as growing social discord, often targeted individuals who practiced the healing arts during the well-known witch hunts and trials.
To see original materials from the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library portrayed in the display cases, contact us.

Image of the Month
UAB sponsored the inaugural Into the Streets volunteer event day on Saturday, April 10, 1999. Over 300 students participated in a wide variety of sponsored events, such as planting flowers and trees, painting houses, and picking up litter around the city and along the Cahaba River. Dr. Virginia Gauld, Vice President for Student Affairs (far left), joined students from UAB Greek organizations as they spent time doing some urban farming.
