Kitten Season is Here
It sounds joyous, but it's really a time of desperation. Every year we get more requests than we can take for unwanted kittens. Are you able to lend a hand?
We are in desperate need for fosters - especially bottle baby fosters.
This is one of the most difficult and yet rewarding experiences you can have. The beauty of it is that you get all the rewards of saving a life and nurturing a gentle spirit into the world --- without the long-term commitment of adoption. If you have children, it can be a wonderful way to teach them about animal care. We have seen many families take kittens every year with great reports of how the experience taught their kids responsibility and helped them grow as people.
If you would like more information on fostering, please fill out an application on our website. You will then be contacted by one of our foster trainers to start the conversation about what type of fostering would fit your lifestyle. They will discuss the ins and out of fostering different ages, the minimal costs involved and help you set up the perfect spot in your home for the sweetest house guests you will ever have!
We also have other ways to support our foster program --- such as transporting bottle babies to our friends in West Linn at PAWS when we are at capacity.

Hogie turns 18!
This Saturday is Hogie's 18th Birthday! Come by and wish our respected elder cat a happy birthday! He's 88, to you and me!

Beautiful treats will be provided by the gorgeous Jubilee Champagne and Dessert Bar. It's the newest place in historic Independence to sit and sip. They just opened a "dark" part of their lovely location with a shimmery date-night vibe. Go by and visit! We thank them for their generosity!

SFOF by the Numbers
Because of your generosity, we have been able to continue to help Salem's cats consistently, year to year. We wanted to share a snapshot of our numbers so you can see what we see. Our adoption rates have been ranging from 93 - 97% over the past couple of years. The variation has to do with changes in kitten seasons, and medically needy cats brought into the shelter.

Pet Sitting Spotlight
Kerrin Long, the Pet Nana
You might know Kerrin Long, also known as the Pet Nana, if you have been in our shelter anytime during the last decade or so. Kerrin was a member of the Board of Directors for two years and still supports the great work we do. Kerrin became "The Pet Nana" in the Spring of 2008 and says that "By far, it's the best job I've ever had. It's a joy getting to know and caring for so many wonderful animals."
Kerrin offers In-home visits to care for your pets when you are away, dog walks/potty breaks while you are at work, and a taxi service to vet, groomer or day care. During her at-home visits, she makes sure your pets have plenty of food and water, spends time playing with, brushing, talking to and loving on them. She also has experience giving medications such as pills, shots or fluids. When taking care of your pets at your home, she will also pick up your mail, water plants and put out your trash containers for pickup for no additional charge. She also gives doggie potty breaks and mid-day walks while you are at work.
Her rates are $17 per visit. For pet taxi trips to the vet, groomer or daycare the rates are $15 one way/$25 round trip.

Penny Mack of Penelope Paw Prints Cat Boarding
Penny Mack, an active member of SFOF for 15 years and currently our Foster Cat Care Coordinator, has opened her own cat boarding facility located on her 7-acre property in south Salem. Penny offers
Have you had a chance to meet Penny Mack of Penelope Paw Prints Cat Boarding? We're lucky that Penny is part of our community here in Salem, and wanted to share a little bit about her pet sitting services with you!boarding at a competitive rate of $15/day. In addition, she will provide on-going medical follow-up care as needed, which includes giving sub-q fluids, medications, wound care, etc. Nail trims are also given for a small additional fee. Penny will also come to your home to do nail trims at a per-cat fee of $15 (1-2 cats); or $10 (2+ cats).
Penny's boarding accommodations are simple, clean, and comfortable! Three-tier kennels are provided, in addition to a group play area. Here's a picture:
If you prefer in-home care, Penny will also provide that at a fee of $30-40 per visit, depending on where you live.
There is a 10% discount on boarding or in-home care for anyone who adopted from SFOF. How wonderful!

Senior Cats Need Homes, Too
Imagine that one day your world changed. Your cozy home was a thing of the past, your beloved mom is nowhere to be found. Things were so great - full of warm blankets, fireplaces, and the soft lap of your life-long companion.
This happens more often than we'd all like to see.
We see several cases every year where an owner passes away or has to move into assisted living and is unable to take their aging cat(s) with them.
The poor, confused, loving cats arrive at our shelter, trembling with fear and wondering what has happened to their life-long companion.
Please consider helping these innocent victims by giving them a fur-ever home. These older kitties still have SO much love to give! Plus, they are house-trained and ready to go!

I Rescued a Human Today
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the hallway peering into the kennels.
I felt her need instantly, and knew I had to help her.
As she read my kennel card, I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past.
I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.
I shoved my head up against the bars to comfort her.
Gentle fingers caressed my head; she was desperate for companionship.
A tear fell down her cheek, and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be OK.
Soon my kennel door opened, and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms!
I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side!
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes!
I was so fortunate that she came down my hallway.
So many more are out there who haven’t walked the shelter hallways, there are so many more to be saved, at least I could save one.
