Flooding your Inbox
In 1965, and for sure again this year, sandbags; lots and lots of sandbags.
Isn't it interesting that we fight floods the same way today that we did 54 years ago?
We fill sandbags. Why hasn't flood control tech advanced over the years?
They are easy to use, inexpensive and they work!
Sandbag facts coming at you...
Today's sandbags are roughly 14 x 26", they are polypropylene and not burlap because plastic stands up to the elements better (a sad truth). An optimally filled sandbag weights about 40 pounds. It needs to be filled 1/2 - 2/3 full of course sand, enough to allow it to mold into the gaps in the sandbag wall.
Our city will fill thousands and thousands of sandbags in the coming weeks. Just like the years before us. Hundreds of volunteers are ready to help.
One easy way you can help, that won't hurt your muscles...stop into a business downtown Stillwater in the coming weeks. While there are still hundreds of parking spots in town, some of our city parking lots are closed and that is making it less convenient for customers to visit downtown businesses. The weather will be beautiful this week, so it may be nice to walk a few extra blocks. Stop down for a coffee, buy a Mother's Day present early at a boutique, grab some spices or olive oil, there is always room in the budget for chocolate or ChicagoMix right? Your local businesses will be so grateful.
The large parking lot to the South of our building is still open as is the parking lot behind us, but that may change as the river rises. We'll keep you informed.
Enjoy the day!
