Mission: (Plastic) Free Water for all!

Refill Borders is on a mission to make refilling your water bottle as easy, convenient and cheap as possible, by introducing Refill Stations in every town and village.

An exciting Refill Scheme is being launched in the Borders with SCCAN support, encouraging participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and other businesses to sign up to the free Refill app and put a sticker in their window which alerts passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to fill up their water bottle for free.

There are already nearly 50 Refill Stations in the Borders, among them Fish & Fine Foods in Duns (see image). The Scheme aims to increase the number to 100 by this summer and raise awareness of the Scheme amongst residents and visitors to the area.

Refill Borders is being supported by a range of plastic free and environmental groups across the Borders: Plastic Free Borders,Greener Melrose, A Greener Hawick, Peebles Can, Tweed Green, Greentweedeco, Sea the Change, and Plastic Free Kelso have all joined together in a common cause. The Borders Book Festival has kindly agreed to support the launch on their opening day, Thursday June 13th.

Visit the Refill website at www.refill.org.uk to download the free Refill app and find out more about the non-profit Refill movement. If you are interested in supporting the roll-out of this scheme, please email Rachel at refillborders@gmail.com.

Let's Keep Scotland Beautiful - Annual Spring Clean

Keep Scotland Beautiful is organising its annual Spring Clean campaign during April and May 2019. Last year more than 30,000 people the length and breadth of Scotland took part, removing more than 300 tonnes of litter – the equivalent of three blue whales or 50 elephants! A fabulous effort.

But this year, we want to get even more of you involved to help clear up even more litter. Find out how to take part and help us keep Scotland beautiful.

If you are a community group, business, school, individual or another type of organisation you can work together with us to #CleanUpScotland. You can either:

Organise your own Clean Up event or

Get involved with an existing Clean Up near you.

Help to inform planning policy for rural areas in Scotland – Research Survey

Savills and the research institute Inherit, which is part of an independent charity, are undertaking research for the Scottish Government that will inform the preparation of Scotland’s next National Planning Framework. The team is exploring how planning policy can help to support strong and vibrant rural communities and economies in the coming years.

It is important that the research is informed directly by rural communities and businesses and by the organisations that represent them. If you qualify, please fill out the online research survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/rpp2050

The closing date is Friday 22nd March 2019.

Take individual Action!

Are you an individual without attachment to a community organisation or group but would like to get active? Here are some things you can do NOW to help fight climate change and protect our planet:

For a Scottish Environment Act:
Between now and 11th May, the Scottish Government is seeking
views on the future of environmental protections in Scotland that will determine how well we can protect our environment.
Tell the Scottish Government that we need a Scottish Environment Act to protect and enhance our environment now and in the future
here.

For a Good Food Nation:
You still have until 29th March to share your views with the Government on how Scotland can become a Godo Food Nation. The Food Coalition have produced
a helpful Guide on how to respond. For people with little time, the Coalition has even put together an e-action page which you can fill in in a few minutes.

For an energy-efficient Planet:
Take part in
Earth Hour 2019 on Saturday 30th March, 8.30pm by pledging to make a change, e.g. on the way you eat or on the plastic you buy.

How do we talk to children about climate change?
An online conversation from 8-9.30pm on Wednesday, 27th March 2019

Inspired by the current #YouthStrike4Climate, SCCAN and XR are organising this 90 minute call that will make space for 6-10 people to share with one another their experience and feelings around talking to children about climate change. We won't be offering answers (though we may come up with some together), but will focus on speaking our own, and hearing others' experience and feelings on the issue.

Please contact Eva at evaschonveld@gmail.com if you're interested.

New Members

This month, we are very happy to welcome the following 11 organisations and 8 individuals to the SCCAN family:
  1. Rural Housing Scotland (Associate) - We provide support to rural communities to enable them to develop affordable housing projects.
  2. Fyne Futures Ltd -  A subsidiary of Fyne Homes Ltd, a housing association with a focus on community regeneration and environmental sustainability.  Since 2005, Fyne Futures has been delivering a range of social and environmental benefits to Bute and beyond.   The Company has continued to grow and evolve to ensure sustainability, grow our income and support our social and environmental objectives. See also Toward Carbon Zero Bute.

  3. AES Solar (Associate) - As a manufacturer of solar thermal collectors and installer of PV and battery systems we have a strong interest in community energy and supporting the cause for affordable energy to all.

  4. Scottish Rural Action (Associate) - We are a grassroots-led, non-profit organisation. We seek to ensure that decision-makers understand the needs and strengths of rural communities in Scotland, and that policy does not disadvantage rural communities. Members at the most recent Scottish Rural Parliament voted to include a motion on Climate Change in our manifesto. Given the significant impact climate change is and will have on rural communities, and also the potential for rural areas to mitigate climate change impacts, we feel membership of SCCAN could be of mutual benefit.

  5. Community Energy Scotland (Associate) - CES is a membership organisation with over 400 non-profit distributing community group members in Scotland. Our aim is to strengthen and empower local communities by helping them to own, control and benefit from their local renewable energy resources, control and reduce their energy costs, regenerate their communities and play their part in the low carbon transition. Our work over the last 10 years has supported over 1000 communities and resulted in over 500 projects enabling community owned generation assets of 37MW to be developed.

  6. Global Justice Edinburgh - Global Justice Edinburgh is a local group member of Global Justice Now. Global Justice Now is a democratic social justice organisation working as part of a global movement to challenge the powerful and create a more just and equal world. We raise awareness about the need for change, and act in solidarity with those fighting injustice, particularly in the global south.

  7. Kirkliston Community Garden - Looking to provide the community with local produce, wildlife habitat, skills development and education

  8. REAP Scotland (Associate) - REAP (Rural Environmental Action Project) is a local environmental and sustainable development charity based in Keith, North East Scotland.  We would like to see a future, where everyone can afford to heat their homes, eat well, and protect our environment now and for the future. We work towards this by delivering projects and services to meet local needs and aims, including local food and free and impartial energy advice.

  9. Kirkconnel and Kelloholm Development Trust - We are keen to regenerate a community in the top percentile in the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation.

  10. Zero Waste Aberdeen - Our group aims to introduce a circular enconomy in the Aberdeen area and beyond. Our immediate and pressing concern is the proposed incinerator in the south east of Aberdeen. By showing in practical terms that the circular economy will deprive the incinerator of materials to burn and thus make it redundant.

  11. Greenway's Dundee (Associate) - Greenway's is a proposed packaging-free shop for Dundee. Our primary aim is to empower local people to reduce their personal environmental impact in a simple, everyday way, by offering foods, homewares and body care products without any packaging. We want to promote calls to 'reduce and reuse' by giving a real alternative to supermarket grocery shopping. We also see a permanent makers' space in our premises, where people can come together to share skills, make friends and build an own-brand range of products to sell in-store. Crafting is good for body and mind, and doing-it-yourself reduces waste and reliance on big manufacturers. We're looking for collaborators on our journey to opening in late 2019, ideally as a CIC. Please help us spread the word and make this happen!

PLUS 8 individual members which we are not naming for privacy reasons.
                                 Welcome to all!
