A WORD FROM DR. FESSLER

On Tuesday evening, many of our students were recognized by the Community Character Coalition (CCC) of Elk Grove, in coordination with the Mayor and Village Trustees of Elk Grove Village, at their youth recognition night.

This annual event always makes me so proud of our students and district because you can really see the pride the students and staff members take in their efforts to help others. The enthusiasm the students have in explaining their good deeds to attendees is contagious. I would like to take a moment to recognize these students and staff who were honored at Tuesday’s event for these acts of kindness:

  • Rupley:  21st Century Learning Club supported the D59 "Souper" Bowl for food pantries, made and sold valentines to support the American Heart Association (they have collected a total of over $2,000 to date for the AHA), and visited a senior center for an intergenerational experience.
  • Byrd: Fifth grade students collected and recycled plastic film, competing with schools across the country as part of a challenge issued on American Recycles Day in November. 1st and 2nd grade students continued to collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House in Winfield, and 4th and 5th grade DL classes provided cards of hope and care packages for Phil's Friends, a local non-profit that supports people battling cancer.

  • Salt Creek: Students collected candy for soldiers through Operation Gratitude, raised funds for and donated $100 to the Elk Grove Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, collected money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and hosted a Spring Fling Dance Party to raise funds for new school supplies, among others.

Thank you to all of you for providing our students these excellent opportunities to learn about the joy of helping others.

Have a great weekend.
