Dear Friends,
This month, we will observe Holy Week at Delafield Presbyterian Church. It is indeed a holy week. On Palm Sunday, April 14, we will remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem; on Maundy Thursday, April 18, we will remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his friends and his betrayal; on Good Friday, April 19, we will remember Jesus’ death on the cross. As followers of Jesus, we are called to embrace the events of Holy Week, including the death of Jesus on the cross, which can feel a bit like saying we are called to embrace torture. And so I think it is natural to wonder why the Church insists on putting so much emphasis on the most difficult and painful stories of our faith. We have so much in our faith that is encouraging and uplifting. So why do we insist on having a whole week dwelling on the notion that it is in our very nature to kill people who come to change things, people like Jesus? Why does the Church insist on being so depressing? And most of all, why, for a whole week, must we focus our gaze so intently on death?
Holy Week culminates with Good Friday. It is the day that we are called upon to remember the death of Jesus. But there is more to it than just remembering; we are called to come to the cross ourselves. We are to bring all those things that are broken and painful and hopeless and lay them on the cross of Christ. We’ve all experienced some sin or pain or brokenness this year. Some of us have lost family members or friends to the grave. Some of us have lost hope. Other have seen relationships with so much promise fall by the wayside. Or marriages struggling. Or friendships taxed beyond what they can sustain. Some have seen our health failing us. And for some of us, even our dreams and passions have been on the ropes. When we face death and loss and heartache and suffering, it is easy to lose hope. And when we take a long, hard look in the mirror and realize that some of that suffering is caused by our own inability to love as we ought, our own inability to act selflessly, our own inability to put ourselves in another’s shoes even for a minute, this reality can become even more painful.
Of course, this is the good news that we find at the cross: once we’ve been there, everything changes. Stumbling blocks and foolishness become power and wisdom. The cross changes everything. If something’s been weighing you down you, then perhaps the event that will change everything for you is the cross. If nothing in your life ever seems to change, maybe you haven’t come to the cross of Christ, maybe you need a Good Friday before you can get to your Easter. For, Easter is indeed about an empty tomb. But first it’s about a cross, occupied by God’s own son. So why are we in such a rush to get Jesus up to heaven? I think it could be that Holy Week reminds us that we all must face days like Good Friday in our lives. As much as we wish we could just get straight from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, we’ve got to go through a Friday to get there. It was the road for Jesus; it is the road for us.
So, as a pastor and as a friend, I invite you all to observe Holy Week this year. Be present to and mindful of the stories that we recall during that week. Spend some time reading the gospels, reading about Jesus’ trial and death. Spend some time in prayer, thinking of those things that you need to bring to the cross of Christ this year. And come to church. Come and live into the stories that we remember during Holy Week. Come on Palm Sunday to experience the events of Holy Week, through creative interpretation. Come on Maundy Thursday and experience a meal, shared, and bread and wine, body and blood, given for us. And come on Good Friday, and bring yourself and your suffering and your sin to the cross of Christ. When we experience all of these somber and even sad moments, we can once again be surprised and delighted by Easter morning!

Cindy Becker has joined DPC as an Office Assistant. Her office hours will be Tuesday/Thursday 10-2pm. She is married to Don and has 2 adult boys, Drew and Jack. In her free time she enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family. Any email or drop-in’s are welcome to meet her.

The first Sunday of each month is designated loose change Sunday. All loose coins and bills received go to the Deacons Fund to support their missions. As always, your generosity is appreciated!

Lenten Adult Education Opportunity
The season of Lent is a great time to think about why and how we pray. Therefore, Pastor Nikki has planned an Adult Education series which focuses on the Lord’s Prayer, and breaks it down line by line in order to truly understand what it is that Jesus taught us to pray. No materials are needed for this class, but please come with an open mind and a willingness to share your thoughts and feelings. Because study begins at 6, everyone is invited to bring a dinner with them so we can eat together as we study God’s Word. Studies will be held on Thursday evenings at 6 P.M., through April 11

 SIPS AND TALKSWe will be meeting on Wednesday mornings at the Milwaukee Street Traders Coffee Shop, at 10:00 a.m. once a month. You can purchase books at: Books and Company for 15% discount if you tell them you are from Delafield Presbyterian Church book club.

LITTLE DRESSES Our Little Dresses group has been busy this winter sewing dresses and scarves. Thanks to the generous donation of Suzanne Zwaska we have two very nice sewing machines. No longer must we bring our machines from home for sewing during meetings. THANK YOU SUZANNE! Trent Faith was in Guatemala delivering our dresses and pajamas to orphans. Watch the bulletin board for pictures from his trip. We‘re happy to be sewing more dresses for the future.
Our meeting schedule for 2019 is Wednesdays, April 17, May 15 and June 19. We meet from 12 to 4 in our conference room. New members are welcome and sewing skills are not necessary. We have work for those who sew as well as those who don’t. Come join our mission and have some fun.

APRIL FOOD PANTRY
April is the time to think about Mothers! Mother's Day this year is May 12th so plan to bring food items to help all mothers celebrate. We can fill the food pantries with all kinds of items! Bring anything any Sunday throughout April. Our main collection will be April 28!

SPRING CLEAN-UP
Grab your gloves, trowels, rakes and come join us as we clean up the church property. We will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, April 13 and hopefully we will get a lot done to make our grounds look great for the summer! If you have any questions, please contact Herb Rasmussen at herb@sandybottom.com.

UNDIE SUNDAY MISSION
The deacons are sponsoring the second annual UNDIE SUNDAY FUN-raiser, by asking you to provide unopened packages of underwear for those in need in Waukesha County through THE HOPE CENTER.
The drive will begin on May 5 and continue through MAY 26.
MEN’S DAY – Boxer’s or briefs? All sizes are needed! BRING TO CHURCH ON May 5!
WOMEN’S DAY – All sizes needed – briefs only, no bikini’s or smaller. BRING TO CHURCH ON MAY 12!
SUNDAY SCHOOLERS AND YOUTH – shop with your parents or grandparents and pick out your favorites to give to other kids…Spongebob; Super Heroes; Disney Princesses; pretty colors or plain white and BRING TO CHURCH ON MAY 19 or May 26!
You may bring unopened packages of all underwear on any of the Sunday’s and place in the special bin in the Deacon’s Corner in the Fellowship Hall beginning May 1. Thanks for your participation!

24th Annual Fish Fry, Silent Auction, 50/50 Raffle and Bake Sale

DPC's Annual Fish Fry & Auction is fast approaching. The date is April 26 and once again our venue is Western Lakes Golf Club. This is our church's largest fundraiser and we need everyone's help to make it a success. More detailed information will follow but we will need more help the night of the event in all areas including set-up, serving food, helping with the bake sale, auction, and selling raffle tickets.
In addition, we're asking all of you to think how you may be able to help make the auction a bigger event. Many of you have donated wonderful items in the past and that's great,m but we need more participation and want to increase donations from local businesses. Do you have a favorite restaurant or merchant that would donate a gift certificate, merchandise, tickets to a game or concert? Do you know an artist who would donate a piece of art? How about a round of golf for a foursome? Someone already has donated a cabin up north for a long weekend. In addition, again this year we have a boat ride and cocktail cruise for 10 that has been donated. Be creative and try to make it fun!! Please see if you can find a way to contribute. Also, please be ready to bid! We will keep you advised as auction items come in.
