March 2019 Update

Welcome to the March edition of the Canadian Shooting Federation Newsletter. Students across the country have had a busy month. Events of all types have taken place, including a Valentines Day shoot for couples put on by the U of C Firearms Association (top). Carleton University put on a Trap shoot to introduce new shooters to shotgun sports (bottom left). Good on em for braving that Ottawa chilly weather! Lastly UBC was spotted putting some lead down range during the cold too (bottom right).

We are also happy to announce the official formation of two new clubs on opposite sides of the country! Many in the firearms community tend to think that Universities and the affiliated Student Associations are not supportive of shooting sports. However we would like to recognize and thank the administrations, who have been very supportive of our efforts to integrate our teams into their on-campus communities.

Drum roll please....

First off in BC! University of Victoria Shooting Sports formed early February and is up and running! They will hopefully be having their first event in the near future. This will make for a great local rivalry with the guys out across the water at UBC.

And introducing our newest team out East, the Western Firearms Association at the University of Western Ontario. They informed me of their official ratification while writing the final draft of this newsletter. These guys are so fresh that you can still smell the gunpowder.

For all you social media folk, now is your opportunity to follow us on Instagram. We highlight the various sports that our athletes are competing in, and promote our member clubs events. Be sure to check out the linked club profiles to see what they are up to as well!

Look for us in an upcoming issue of Calibre magazine! They are publishing a great article on how students can set up their own post-secondary sport shooting team.

Calgary Gun Show

Are you in Calgary and do you like big event centers filled with firearms? If you answered yes to both of those (I mean one is a gimme), then come and say hello at Calgary Gun Show. We will be there on March 30th and 31st with the U of C and Mount Royal clubs to talk about the future of post-secondary sport shooting. Make sure to come by and say hello!

Trap and Skeet Tournament

The 2019 Winter Trap and Skeet Tournament is almost here! Shoots are set up out of Hamilton, Ottawa, and Calgary. Four different groups are competing, with Carleton and Mount Royal having official teams. From the sounds of it they have been practicing once or twice a week! Weather permitting of course.

It's been great to have the support of the ranges, and we want to recognize the Hamilton Gun Club, Stittsville Range, and the Calgary Firearms Center. Each one of these organizations supports our student athletes in their own way, whether through discounts, range time or another avenue in which they can help. Thanks guys! And good luck to everyone competing in the tournament.

Partnership Highlights

This month we would like to recognize the Sandra Honour and the Shooting Federation of Canada for their dedication and support of our league. They have provided contacts and guidance to help expand and grow our organization. Thanks alot!

We would also like to thank Emily Brown and the Ontario Provincial Trapshooting Association. She has helped in ways above and beyond the scope of Ontario Trap and was instrumental in getting our Hamilton shotgun shooters involved!

Club Spotlight: Carleton University

The Carleton University Firearms Association (CFA) is a student run club at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario dedicated to educating people about firearms laws, proper use, and most importantly safety. The CFA is working towards building a precision rifle team which will help introduce more students into the sport of competition shooting.

Associated with the CFA is the Carleton University Trap & Skeet Team (CU Shotgun) which currently has 8 active team members who are beginning to compete with other university across the country. The team practices 3-4 weekends each month with our couch Dean Herzberg and will be competing in the first CUSF National Trap and Skeet Championship.

Going forward for the rest of 2019 both the CFA and CU Shotgun will continue to engage new/prospective shooters through CUSF and club events to educate more people about firearms within Canada and increase participation within shooting sports.
