Wildlife Rehabilitation
Recent Patients

As Spring approaches, things are picking up in our Wildlife Hospital - take a look at some of our most notable patients!

This Red-tailed Hawk was brought to us earlier this month after being struck by a vehicle. She had sustained an injury to her hallux (or her rear-facing toe) and a significant fracture to the tip of her beak. She was underweight and dehydrated, and required tube feedings and subcutaneous fluids for a few days. She was gently tonged a solid diet and before long she was feeling well enough to self-feed. She has quite a road of recovery before her, but she is making improvements!

Our female Bobcat patient is surely growing up wild! It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch her transform over time. She came to us late last year after she’d been found orphaned. She was so emaciated and small! Now she is a healthy weight and can sometimes be quite ferocious in defense of her “territory” (aka her large outdoor enclosure). She’ll be good and ready for release come spring, when prey availability is plentiful! We are very happy with her progress.

Do you remember the Western Screech Owl from last time? We are excited to announce a successful release last week! Deputy Weikel (pictured here) with Benton County Sheriff's Office rescued this owl back in January. The owl had suffered from head trauma and a fractured radius after being struck by a vehicle. After two months of rehabilitation, the owl made a full recovery and we are so happy to announce this release! Click here for a video of the release

A Huge Thank You!
Winter 2019 Interns

This amazing group of interns dedicated 10-15+ hours of their time each week to assist and learn alongside our rehab staff. We are so proud of what they accomplished while they were here and the growth that we were able to witness. Some of them will continue their internship into the spring and summer months, so keep your eyes peeled to spot them in future updates!

Volunteer Spotlight

Vi Campbell

CWC: What shift(s) are you on?
VC: I work in the laundry room. In the winter when there are fewer patients I am scheduled for Sun and Wed AM. During the summer months, the busy time of the year, I am usually in the laundry room almost every day for a few hours, depending on how much laundry there is to be done. Sometimes there is a lot.

CWC: What book is currently on your nightstand?
VC: I have two. Animals Make Us Human by Temple Grandin, and Proof by Dick Francis
Suzanna Mast

CWC: Do you have a favorite or most memorable patient (past or present)?

SM: I've spent a lot of time with orphaned baby birds in the springtime nursery. Every species has its traits, but every animal definitely has its personality. It's always fun to observe a particularly polite Scrub Jay, for example. I'm also a fan of beak-clacking owls and funky-feathered swallows (babies whose feathers take longer than normal to fully develop).
