Parshas Vayikra - Shvi'i with Rashi

In yesterday’s Chumash, Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu that for certain aveiros, a person brings a Korban Chatas based on what he can afford — a Korban Oleh Veyored. This could be a sheep or goat, or just two birds.
What should someone do if he did one of these kinds of aveiros, but doesn’t even have enough money to buy two birds for a Korban Chatas?
Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu that this kind of person can bring a flour korban (Mincha) instead! But this Korban Mincha is not like the Korban Mincha that a person brings as a present (Nedava) — there will be NO oil and NO spice on the flour, because it is for an aveira.
The kohen burns part of the flour on the Mizbeiach, and the rest is for the kohen to eat in the Beis Hamikdash.
For more serious aveiros, a person needs to bring a different kind of korban, called a Korban Asham. There are many types of Korban Asham. We learn about three today:
1) Asham Me’ilos — A person brings this kind of korban if he did me’ilah — having hana’ah from korbanos that he was not allowed to eat. He also needs to pay back what he took, plus an extra fifth. This money is given to the kohen. Then, when he brings the korban, he will be forgiven for this aveira.
2) Asham Talui — This kind of Asham is brought if a person isn’t sure he did a serious aveira that is punished by Kareis. Let’s say a person ate a piece of fat, but he isn’t sure if the fat he ate was cheilev (which is asur), or a kind of fat which is fine to eat. He brings an Asham Talui, in case he ate the cheilev.
3) Asham Gezeilos — A person brings this korban if he made a not true promise about money in Beis Din, like saying that he didn’t owe money, when really he did. He also needs to pay back the money, plus an extra fifth. Then, when he brings the korban, Hashem will forgive him for this aveira.

Kapitel Nun-Alef is the kapitel which Yidden have used throughout the years to learn how to do teshuvah. This kapitel is what Dovid Hamelech said to Hashem when he heard from the Navi that he had done an aveira. It is part of Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah (and in Tikun Chatzos), which is the time when we do teshuvah for everything we’ve done during the day.
One of the things that Dovid Hamelech says in this kapitel is “Vechatosi Negdi Somid.”
The Alter Rebbe explains that this means that “I always know about my aveira.” Even if a person did teshuvah properly, and is sure that Hashem forgave him 100% (as the Alter Rebbe teaches us in Igeres Hateshuvah), you still have to know that you once did an aveira.
Why is that a good thing? Wouldn’t that just make you feel sad?
No! We don’t think about this ALL the time. But at times when we notice something someone else did wrong, and we might think that we’re much better than them, we remind ourselves that we did aveiros too! Now we can feel humble whenever we need to.

We are learning about why the main thing is “Laasoso” doing mitzvos in this Gashmius’dike world. We learned that Hashem wants a Dira Betachtonim, for the Yidden to follow the Ratzon of Hashem DAVKA in the world where Hashem is hidden the most!
Today the Alter Rebbe tells us that we will finish making the world into a Dira Betachtonim when Moshiach comes! That’s when Hashem’s light will come into the world.
We will ALL be able to see Hashem’s light then!
But how can we see Hashem’s light, if we’re still in this world? Isn’t Hashem’s light too strong for a person?
That’s why Hashem gives us Torah! By learning Torah, Hashem gives Yidden the koach to handle the light of Hashem that will shine in the world when Moshiach comes.

When we say Borei Nefashos, we should be careful to say “KOIL Mah Shebarasa” (with a cholam), and not “KOL Mah Shebarasa” (with a komatz).
A chossid wants to be mekushar to the Rebbe.
How can he do it?
It’s not enough to just to see the Rebbe’s face (or to see videos or pictures). To have proper hiskashrus, we need to learn and understand the Rebbe’s Chassidus!
On Tes Adar, the Frierdiker Rebbe arrived in America. You can imagine how excited the Chassidim were to see the Frierdiker Rebbe, many of them for the first time ever!
In today’s Hayom Yom, we see that this excitement is not enough to be hiskashrus by itself. Chassidim also need to study and understand the Rebbe’s Chassidus in order to be mekushar.

Today’s mitzvah is the same one as yesterday:
(Mitzvas Asei #107) When a neshama leaves a body, the body becomes tomei. Someone who touches or is in the same house as the body gets some of this Tumah too, called Tumas Meis. There are many halachos about what a person who has this kind of Tumah is not allowed to do, and how he can become tahor again. Today’s mitzvah is to follow all of these halachos!

In today’s Rambam, Perakim Tes, Yud, and Yud-Alef, we learn more about Tumas Meis. This is the kind of tumah a person gets from a body after the neshama became separated from it. When someone gets Tumas Meis, he is tomei for a week, and he needs to have the ashes of the Parah Adumah sprinkled on him to become tahor again.
One halacha is that all of the earth outside of Eretz Yisroel is tomei with Tumas Meis. The chachomim also said that the AIR outside of Eretz Yisroel makes a person tomei! (The earth, though, gives a person Tumas Meis, and the tumah from the air outside of Eretz Yisroel only makes someone tomei until that night.)

Now we are going to start the NINTH sefer, called Sefer Korbanos. This sefer will talk about specific Korbanos.
The first set of halachos is about the Korban Pesach. In 10 perakim, the Rambam will teach us about the 16 mitzvos connected to the Korban Pesach! Only four of them are Mitzvos Asei, things we need to do. All the rest are Lo Saasei — things we have to be careful NOT to do. We will IY”H learn them all in Sefer Hamitzvos.
In this first perek, we learn the answers to the questions “What? Where? When? How?” about the Korban Pesach. (The Rambam usually doesn’t teach us the details of the WHY, which is explained in other places in Torah.)

“America Iz Nisht Andersh!” Today is the day that the Friediker Rebbe arrived in America, to live there. (The Friediker Rebbe came for a visit before.)
At that time, the Yidden in America had a very hard time being frum.
The first thing the Friediker Rebbe said was, “America Iz Nisht Andersh!” We shouldn’t think that America is different, that Torah isn’t the same here. The same Torah and the same mitzvos are for EVERYWHERE!
The Friediker Rebbe asked Rabbi Hodakov to come with him on the boat from Poland to America. On the boat, the Friediker Rebbe told Rabbi Hodakov that they need to make a plan what they would do to build Yiddishkeit in America. If they wait until they are already there, it will be too hard to realize the right way to do it.
That’s when they decided to start the mosdos of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch, Machneh Yisroel, and Kehos. The Rebbe later developed these and made them into the way Chabad Lubavitch is today!
One lesson we can learn from this is that we shouldn’t wait until we get older to decide how we’ll live. While we are children, we should get the proper Chinuch and make decisions about how to do things right for the rest of our lives!

Rabbi Mendel Notik, who had the zechus of serving the Rebbetzin in her home, shared this story:
“The Rebbetzin called and asked if I could accompany her somewhere. I said I would come over immediately. Then the Rebbetzin added that if I had not yet davened she would find someone else. I replied that there are times when I would daven a bit later than usual, so it wasn’t a problem. The Rebbetzin told me, “I was taught that the first thing one does in his day is daven,” and said she would go herself.”

Every week, we read a parsha from the Torah, in order. The Chachomim also set up special parshios which are read on certain Shabbosim — extra pieces of the Torah that are read after the regular parsha. For example, we read another section of the Torah on Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah.
There are four weeks around Adar where we read another section of the Torah after the Parshas Hashavua, in a separate Sefer Torah.
We already leined Parshas Shekalim, which was about the Machatzis Hashekel, around the time of Rosh Chodesh Adar. (That is the time when the Beis Din started nudging people to give their Machatzis Hashekel.)
The week before Purim, we read Parshas Zachor. Parshas Zachor speaks about remembering what Amalek did to the Yidden, and our mitzvah to wipe them out.
This is a very important parsha to hear in Shul! There are different opinions of whether women need to hear this parsha, and also whether it can be fulfilled at other times during the year, like in the Torah reading for Purim which also speaks about Amalek, or other times during the year when this is read.
Therefore, women who don’t have to take care of little kids at home, and definitely girls, should try to go to shul if possible to hear Parshas Zachor being read. If you can’t, you should try to read it from a Chumash at home, or at least talk about remembering Amalek! If you are in shul on Purim when they read the Torah, you can also have in mind to fulfill the mitzvah then.

We learned that by doing mitzvos during the time of Golus, we are doing our part for Hashem to be able to bring the Geulah.
The same thing is through fighting the war with Amalek. By us fighting the Ruchnius war, Hashem will do His part and bring the Geulah when we will be able to destroy the Gashmius Amalek too.
What is the Ruchnius war with Amalek?
The Torah says that Amalek KNOWS about Hashem, and tries to rebel against Hashem on purpose.
The Ruchnius Amalek is a certain trick the Yetzer Hara tries to use against us, even though it knows about Hashem.
When a person sees a neis, it usually will make him excited, and he will want to be more connected to Torah and Yiddishkeit.
But the Amalek argument of the Yetzer Hara is that there is nothing to get excited about. Since Hashem creates the whole world from nothing all the time, what is the big deal for Hashem to make a neis? What is there to be excited about?
Even though the Yetzer Hara KNOWS about Hashem, and is using excuses based on kedusha, it is trying to keep us from getting excited about Torah and Yiddishkeit! We need to fight against this Amalek and YES get excited when we see Hashem’s nisim!
Then, Hashem will do HIS part, and bring Moshiach when we can get rid of the Gashmius Amalek also!
