This Week at MVUC

Mount Vernon Unitarian Church

March 20, 2019

1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria, VA., 22307; 703-765-5950

Sunday Services: 9:15 and 11:15 am

This Sunday's Services:

“Making Women Safer by Letting Go of Shame”

Mai Trinh
A recent UN Report found that the most dangerous place for a woman is inside her home. Women continue to pay a deadly price for gender inequality, discrimination, and negative stereotypes and are more likely to be killed by family members and partners. Is vulnerability and letting go of the shame of abuse the key to keeping women safer inside their homes? We can practice compassion and embracing vulnerability by remembering the first UU Principle of acknowledging the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

Eleanor Erickson

With deep sadness, I share the news of the death of Eleanor Erickson from pancreatic cancer. She will be missed by all of us. Cards can be sent to her family at 6703 Breddo Street, Alexandria, VA 22306. More information on a memorial at MVUC will be shared soon.

With love, Rev. Kate R. Walker

PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE GRASS ALONG THE CHURCH DRIVEWAY.

Additional parking is available on Mason Hill Drive. You can walk up the mulched Church Path, in front of Hollin Hall, and to the Meeting House. It's easier than walking up the driveway from Windmill Lane.

Food Pantry Donations

Please remember to bring in non-perishable food items for UCM or Rising Hop food pantries. Even one can help! Thank you
Stewardship Update

In the stewardship campaign launched on March 3, we have heard from a little over a third of the member households in our congregation. About half of those we have heard from increased their commitments, while many continued their commitments at their previous levels and a few found that they had to reduce their commitments. When these updated commitments are added to the existing commitments of those we have not heard from, the total rate of giving is about $473,500 per year. Unfortunately, our budget calls for $480,000 in stewardship contributions in the church year 2019-20, leaving us $6,500 short of our needs.

Increases in stewardship commitments are needed because cost-of-living increases affect many items in our budget, including the largest item—staff compensation. To avoid painful budget cuts, we need to close our $6,500 gap. We need much more than that to grow our budget to address some deferred property maintenance issues. If you have not done so, please do what you can to help close the gap. You can change your stewardship commitment by filling out a green commitment card (available in the Commons), using the online form, or emailing your intentions (start date and amount per week, month, quarter, or year) to Stewardship.

If we don’t hear from you, we will assume that your stewardship contributions will continue at their current level. Please consider, however, that steady increases in our members’ stewardship commitments are needed to keep revenues in line with expenses.

For more information, contact Al Robbert, Finance Committee chair, at 703-299-9892.

Tax Statements

Lost your 2018 tax statement from MVUC?  If you need another one, please email Al Robbert. Alternatively, you can download a pdf copy of your 2018 statement from the Giving>My Giving History tab in Access ACS.  Just click on the ”PDF Tax Statement” button found on that tab.
VIC-HOP

Our wonderful service at the Rising Hope Shelter continues in March. Many thanks for the dinners, servers/clean-up crews, and breakfast bags - ALL are signed for.

We still need one or two overnight chaperones for each night except Thursday, March 21. It is low key, fun to do with others, & you get to sleep on a cot in a separate room!

An overnight spot can be covered by 2, split the shift any way you like. Sign up in the Commons, or on Signup Genius. Please contact Helen Lounsbury with any questions 703-346-4401. Heartfelt thanks to all for supporting this excellent program.

Bring your ideas to help develop a living three-year strategic plan. We will have collaborative dialogue,   engage actively with each other, and create constructive possibilities for our plan. Send questions to BOT@mvuc.org.

Volunteers Needed for MVUC's Used Book & Art Sale

Thursday-Saturday, March 28 - 30, Hollin Hall, the Commons, & Chapel

Sign up during coffee hour or contact Sandy Peterson at 703-768-2565 to help with the Used Book & Art Sale. Many strong bodies are needed on Sunday, March 24, 9:15 am, to bring up books from the basement of Hollin Hall to the first floor and to the Chapel after service. Other opportunities include setting out books March 25 - 27 (9 am-3 pm); cashiering March 28 (1 pm-5 pm) & March 29 - 30 (10 am-3 pm) (2-hour shifts during the sale); and clean up on Saturday, March 30, at 3 pm until we are done (about 5 pm).  No experience necessary! Any amount of time is helpful.
Share the Plate for March

During the month of March, the Share the Plate program will support MVUC’s Partner Church program, which helps sustain partner churches in Szentháromság, Romania, and Mawlat, India, both small villages with large Unitarian communities. These partnerships foster communication and deepen friendships while providing opportunities for us to learn about one another’s cultures and religious practices. We also provide the churches with financial support in the form of monthly ministerial stipends, yearly congregational contributions for specific projects, and educational opportunities through a scholarship program and support to the village schools.
Rev. Walker will be on study leave March 21 - April 14 while she works on a book for the 200th Anniversary of the Ministerial Conference at Berry Street.  You can find more information about the lecture series here: https://www.uuma.org/page/berrystreetabout.
Climate Action Team (CAT)

The organizing team has been hard at work setting up a structure to involve the whole congregation in our proposed yearlong focus on climate change. Check out the bulletin boards at the back of the sanctuary for ongoing information and visit the CAT table in the Commons to learn more and get involved. Feel free to contact our CAT team with questions.

MVUC Encourages Everyone to Write a Statement of Faith
As part of MVUC’s What Makes UU program, we’re encouraging everyone ages 6 and up to write (or dictate or draw) a statement of faith. To find out more, stop by the WMUU table in the Commons Sundays after the second service and before selected first services January - May. There you can speak to someone who has written a credo or statement of faith, pick up information and resources to assist in your own faith statement creation or revision and check out our success as we strive toward our goal of 100% of MVUC members having a personal faith statement. To find out more, check out the minister’s and Lifespan Spiritual Growth articles here. If you have questions or suggestions, contact. Rev. Dr. Kate Walker, or Ann Richards.

Great Decisions will not be held this Sunday, March 24 in favor of the Book Sale.
Sunday, March 31, 12:45 pm, Hollin Hall Fireplace Room

Our next venture will be a hike in a new location, Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve, in Stafford County, VA. Located on the Potomac River, it features beautiful old-growth woodland and miles of hiking trails with views of Accokeek and Potomac Creeks. We will probably hike about 5 miles. The preserve is located off Exit 140 on I-95, about one hour's drive from MVUC, where we will meet for carpooling. Optional post-hike lunch in Occoquan. Co-leaders Victoria Soderberg and Carl Lohmann

Wim Hof Method Workshop
Saturdays, March 23, April  27 (This is not a series: you do not need to attend all)
1:30 - 5:30 pm, Hollin Hall, $10 supply fee

In this Wim Hof Method workshop, you will learn and EXPERIENCE the fundamentals of the Wim Hof Method (WHM) from Bob Soulliere, one of the few WHM Certified Instructors here in the USA. These are the fundamental techniques the "The Iceman" Wim Hof developed over the course of 40 years. Your workshop experience will include both light lecture and hands-on training. We will explore the 3 pillars of the method: breathwork, cold exposure (ice bath), and mindset/focus. Throughout the workshop, you will be learning, moving, breathing, ice bathing, and expanding your comfort boundaries. Become Happier, Healthier, & Stronger with these scientifically-proven benefits of the WHM:

  • reduce inflammation
  • improve mood & energy
  • enhance sleep & relaxation
  • boost metabolism & immune function
  • decrease stress

Partner Church News
Sunday, March 31

Save the date for the annual Partner Church service, which will be held on Sunday, March 31. Last year’s trip participants will share reflections on their visit to Transylvania and their time in Szentharomsag, our partner church village. The month of March’s Share the Plate will benefit MVUC’s Partner Church program in Romania and India.

We are looking for sponsors for our scholarship program, which helps trade, high school and university
students in Szentharomsag. The village school only goes until the eighth grade, so young people who want to continue their education have travel, tuition, and living expenses. Contact Lisa Gillispie,
if you are interested in sponsoring or sharing the expenses for one of our students.

MVUC Caring Associates
The heart of our caring community

The MVUC Caring Associates is a group of twelve community members who volunteer to provide support to fellow MVUC members who are ill, in crisis or experiencing life transitions.

The support offered goes well beyond casseroles and cards. Over the years, MVUC Caring Associates have provided support in these areas:

              * Home and hospital visits
              * Telephone chats
              * Rides to appointments, grocery shopping
              * Orthopedic equipment (as available)
              * And, of course…warm meals

If you know of a community member in need or if you need help yourself, please contact MVUC Caring Associates Coordinator, Pam Unger at 703-965-5111.

For orthopedic equipment needs, contact MVUC Caring Associate volunteer Sandy Peterson at 703-768-2565.
Recurring Activities / Events / Committees

We want to be sure your RECURRING activity continues to be posted on the online calendar at www.mvuc.org. Chairs and coordinators please (1) resubmit a meeting request form for your recurring activity at the start of each fiscal year, and (2) continue to check the calendar every few months to be sure the activity is still posted. The system does not permit us to enter activities indefinitely and the activity will eventually “drop off” the calendar. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Samuels.
Announcements

Thanks to our Volunteers
Our gracious thanks to all those who prepare coffee, tea and delicious and healthy foods for us each week after our Sunday services. All members of the congregation volunteer to serve during (and before and after) the coffee hour following each service on a rotating basis.

New Coffee Hour Rotation Began June 3
Thank you to everyone who has climbed on the bandwagon and helped out this year in the 2nd year of the new coffee hour volunteer system.  We know there have been a few kinks to work out but feel that they have been pretty well smoothed over with the help of feedback from everyone. We are continuing this system and want to let you know that the new rotation for the year started on June 4. Groups have been set up, leaders assigned and you will get a call or email at the beginning of the month as a reminder. The list will be available in the Commons if you would like to get a head start.  Please remember that if you can't work your scheduled Sunday we would appreciate it if you found someone to switch with. Thank you for your continued support of the Coffee Hour. Questions? Contact Bonnie Iredell.

Flower Donations
Want to donate flowers? Please, contact Angel Collins.

Meeting Room Requests
As our community grows, along with increased renters, it is especially helpful to submit your meetings/events room requests two weeks in advance to compete to secure your space. In addition, the advance requests using the form helps office staff to “dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s” and serve this wonderful community even better. Need a form? Email Susan Samuels or pick up a form in the box above the staff mailboxes.

Keep In Touch ...
Changes are a part of life, and we’d like to know how to reach you. If you have a new email, phone number, or address, please let us know. Send updates to Susan Samuels.
Ongoing Adult Religious Education

Contemplative Group
Sundays, 10:15 am, Hollin
Hall, Sun Porch *9:00 am when there is only one service
Deepen your spiritual life through contemplative practice. A typical session includes selected readings from different traditions, a period of silent meditation, and brief discussions. Contact: Jim Kerr for more information, sign up in the Commons or online.

Laughter Yoga
Sunday, April 14, 10:30 am - 11:00 am
Hasya Yoga (Laughter Yoga) combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing (Pranayama). Anyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor, jokes or comedy. Laughter is simulated as a body exercise in a group but with eye contact and childlike playfulness, it soon may turn into real and contagious laughter. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter... one gets the same physiological and psychological benefits!  Led by certified instructor Claire Brolin.  For more information contact Jim Kerr.

Sitting Meditation
Sundays, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm, Carriage House
We practice sitting meditation and study readings from Jack Kornfeld, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sharon Salzberg, and others. The readings provide encouragement, instruction, and support for those with no previous experience in Buddhist meditation. We practice for our own benefit and the benefit of others. Introductory instruction is available for newcomers. Led by Dale Peebles. You do not need to register in advance.  For more information contact Jim Kerr.

Knitting in the Spirit
First and Third Tuesdays monthly, 7:00 pm, Meeting House or Offsite
Knitters from beginners to experienced are invited to meet for knitting, discussion, knitting assistance, and comradery.  Absolute beginners, spinners, crocheters, and other handicrafters welcome. Sign up in the Commons, online or contact Ann Richards for more information and to confirm location.

 TED Talks
Monday, April 1, 7:30 pm, Nursery (offered first Mondays of each month)
Nature. Beauty. Gratitude. Nature’s beauty can be fleeting - but not through Louie Schwartzberg’s lens. His stunning time-lapse photography, accompanied by powerful words from Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast, serves as a meditation on being grateful for every day. ALSO Green the Ghetto. In an emotionally charged talk, MacArthur-winning activist Majora Carter details her fight for environmental justice in the South Bronx - and shows how minority neighborhoods suffer most from the flawed urban policy.
This TED presentation will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Barb Bacon. Register in the Commons or online. Contact Jim Kerr for more information.

Reversing Global Warming: Introduction to Drawdown
Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, Wednesday, March 27, 2019, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
UUCA, 4444 Arlington Blvd. (Rt. 50 and Geo. Mason) Arlington, VA 22204

Pachamama's Drawdown Project gives us hope! Project Drawdown is a coalition of more than 200 researchers and other experts from 22 countries led by author, environmentalist, and entrepreneur Paul Hawken. Over the course of 5 years of rigorous scientific research, they identified and modeled the 100 most substantive, already existing solutions for addressing global warming and revealed astounding news: that it is possible not just to slow global warming, but to actually reverse it by 2050. The solutions surround us.

Join us for a two-hour workshop, "Reversing Global Warming: Introduction to Drawdown" on Wednesday, March 27, 7-9 pm, at UUCA, Activity Room. The workshop material is provided by the Pachamama Alliance and includes video clips of Paul Hawken. Some participants may choose to continue learning by participating in a 5-session group this fall, "Drawdown Solutions: Getting Into Action", which can support you in finding your unique contribution to reversing global warming. RSVPs are recommended but not required. Register online. Please be prompt as the workshop will take the full two hours. For more information contact Mary Pike.

UUA GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Spokane, Washington | June 19-23, 2019
General Assembly is an unforgettable experience for the thousands of Unitarian Universalists that attend each June. Attendees leave with a renewed sense of energy, inspiration, and innovative ideas to take back to their congregations and communities. GA is even more enjoyable if experienced with a delegation of congregational peers who can share expenses and meals and provide mutual support during the conference. This year, in addition to Theme-Based Programming, the schedule will feature Role-Based Track Programming, including time for discussion among attendees, sharing inspiring models and stories, and concrete suggestions for how to further the work or "take it home."

In order to raise interest and to help your congregations learn more about General Assembly, we have assembled promotional resources to download, copy or print for further distribution.
