Village of Cayuga Heights Recognized As A 2018 Tree City USA

The Arbor Day Foundation has named the Village a 2018 Tree City USA in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.  The Village achieved this recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.  "Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand," said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation.  "Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education."  Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained.  They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.  Friday April 26th is National Arbor Day.  More information about Tree City USA designation may be found here.

Sunset Park Grant

The Village of Cayuga Heights was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Tompkins County Towns and Villages Parks and Trails Grant Program.  The grant will be used for enhancement and restoration of Sunset Park, specifically to repair the stone pillars, fence and seating and to maintain the view towards Cayuga Lake.   For more information about the Tompkins County Community Planning Department and the 2019 Municipal Grant Programs, please visit their site.

Thinking About Renting Out Your Home For Cornell Graduation?

Cornell Graduation, Ithaca College Graduation and Cornell Reunions are just around the corner.  If you are thinking about renting out your Cayuga Heights home for any or all of these events, please be advised that a short term rental permit must be applied for and approved prior to advertisement and rental.  To start the process, please visit our website to review the applicable zoning laws and procedures.  An application may be found here.  After the application is submitted, the $125 permit fee must be submitted within 10 business days.  Once your application is reviewed, you will be sent an email if the permit is approved.  Your permit number must be prominently displayed in any online or print advertisement for the short term rental and a short term rental shall not be advertised without a valid registration permit.  A reminder that rental stays may not exceed 28 days total in any calendar year and that 14 of the 28 days must be owner occupied during the term of the rental.  Please contact the Village Clerk office if you have any questions at 607-257-1238.

Food Scraps Success

The Village of Cayuga Heights has had great success with the Food Scrap Recycling Program.  The 836 Hanshaw Road site, which is open Sundays 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is free of charge, has been one of the top facilities used in Tompkins County.  For more information, including details on what is and what is not accepted, please visit the Tompkins County Recycling and Materials Management page or you can view an easy pocket reminder sheet here.  Thank you for your efforts in making the Village a more environmentally aware community!

Ithaca's Discovery Trail

The Ithaca Discovery Trail is comprised of eight local sites which promote exercise, education and research.  The Cayuga Nature Center, Tompkins County Public Library, Sciencenter, Museum of the Earth, History Center, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Cornell Botanic Gardens, and the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell are all part of the Discovery Trail Partnership.  As the days get longer and the weather warms up, these sites all become great options for enjoying Ithaca.  For calendars of upcoming events, please visit the page here.
