Celebrating 40 Years of Contribution to the City and to Charity
We are delighted to invite our members and their personal guests (family, friends or colleagues) to join together at the WCI 40th Anniversary Lunch at the Guildhall on Friday 28 June 2019. This will be the principal celebration of the 40th Anniversary of our foundation as a Guild, the precursor to becoming a fully-fledged Livery Company. It will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the last 40 years with those Founders who had the vision for our Company
The Guildhall will provide a fitting spectacular backdrop for the occasion with music and fine food and wine to ensure we celebrate in style.
The Principal Guest will be Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli FCCA FCSI FBCS, Executive Chairman, Z/Yen Group and Immediate Part Master of the Worshipful Company of World Traders.
The celebrations will begin with a Church Service in our home Church, St Lawrence Jewry-next-Guildhall to be followed by a Reception in the Old Library and Luncheon in the magnificent Great Hall of Guildhall.
The lunch will start with a Champagne Reception at 12.15pm in the Old Library, before moving to the Great Hall at 1pm. Tickets are £150 each (inc. VAT) and include pre-lunch reception and wines with lunch.
Further information about the opportunities for firms to support the event are also on the website – click here
The need for all employers to make the well being of their staff priority, especially in many of the highly pressurised business in the City of London, was the key theme of the Company’s March Winter Lunch, held at Vintners’ Hall.
The principal speaker was Ben Higgin, who as well as being a partner at PwC works with the Samaritans. He was closely involved with the launch of the ‘Well being in the City’ app in conjunction with the Lord Mayor’s Appeal last year. This inspired the Master, Terry Masters, to make The Samaritans his charity for the year, as he explained to the members and their guests at the lunch.
"I am very pleased to welcome Jason Jaspal, Rosie Al-Alwani, Sam Gale and Gill McLearnon and Ben Higgin from the Samaritans. The Samaritans are one of the three charities being supported by the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and are my chosen charity for the year".
“Last year Cheryl and I were honoured to be present at the launch of ‘Well Being in the City’ an app designed by PwC for the then Lord Mayor Charles Bowman aimed at the well being of City workers. I promised Charles I would do my best at publicising this to the insurance workers in the City”.
The Master also welcomed Rt Honourable Mark Field MP for the Cities of London and Westminster and Minister of State at the Foreign Office. Alderman Sue Langley and several representatives of other Livery companies.
Before the lunch, the Master presented The Frank Morgan Rose Bowl to Bob Beckett on behalf of WIGS (the Company’s golf society) and the trophy for coming second overall in the previous day’s 15th Inter-Livery Pancake Race to Oliver Mackie (see below).
Trade Mark Approved for “London Insures The World”
The Company is delighted that the slogan it unveiled for the Lord mayor’s Show last November – London Insures The World – has been officially registered as a trade mark.
This means that it can only be used by the WCI and it will now feature prominently in our documents, marketing and social media profiles.
We are also delighted that iENGAGE – our forum for younger members - has been granted trade mark protection.
WCI Shines in City Pancake Races
There were top class performances from the whole WCI team the in 15th Inter-Livery Pancake Races held in bright sunshine in Guildhall Yard on Shrove Tuesday.
Liveryman Oliver Mackie took top honours for the team coming second overall, having won the Liveryman’s Final. Despite winning their races, Kimberly Foster-Powell (Ladies Race), Terry Masters (Masters Race) and Josh Brekenfeld – running as Admiral Lord Nelson in the Novelty Race – were not quite fast enough to qualify for their respective finals.
As well as being a colourful and enjoyable spectacle, the Inter-Livery Pancake Races also raises money for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
Addressing Uncertainty in Board Decision Making
The next iNED Forum on Monday 1 April will focus on the many challenges board faces when dealing with uncertainty, one of the new constants in business life.
Effective management of uncertainty can lead to better, more informed decisions. However, many decision makers and their advisors do not always face up to uncertainty, in part because there is little constructive guidance or tools available to help. The Forum will focus on the extensive work done by The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries working party over a five-year period.
The main speakers will be The Master Insurer, Dr Terry Masters, Melinda Strudwick, a Director working in PwC’s Risk Modelling Services practice, and Paul Kaye, who has oversight of the reinsurance actuarial practice at Aon in London.
There is a packed programme of events for WCI members, their friends and business colleagues over the next few months. Check the website regularly for full details of all the events. Here are a few of the highlights in addition to those events mentioned above:
