Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I usually put the newsletter together on Friday morning. This week, however, we had our 10-month old grandson spend the night with us on Thursday, and when I woke up to the news out of New Zealand, I didn't want to do anything but cuddle and play with him all day. So that's what I did! Even with all of this wonderful sunsine, some days I stay in a dark funk and greet the morning discouraged and filled with trepidation. Fortunately, that never happens on the days I get to spend with the baby--all I need to do is love and sometimes sing the Baby Shark Song in the middle of cereal aisle in Winco to keep him happy.
I love it when I can be silly! There probably was a time, not even that long ago, when you wouldn't have found me singing and dancing while food shopping. I would have been afraid to make a scene or call attention to myself in any way. Thank goodness for leaning into my old age, and learning to express the me that I want to be, silly or not. I am so grateful that I am on the mend from my knee surgery and can enjoy these longer days and brighter skies. I hope you all get out and about the neighborhood, too, and please drop by and say hello.

Once the world was perfect, and we were happy in that world.
Then we took it for granted.
Discontent began a small rumble in the earthly mind.
Then Doubt pushed through with its spiked head.
And once Doubt ruptured the web,
All manner of demon thoughts
Jumped through—
We destroyed the world we had been given
For inspiration, for life—
Each stone of jealousy, each stone
Of fear, greed, envy, and hatred, put out the light.
No one was without a stone in his or her hand.
There we were,
Right back where we had started.
We were bumping into each other
In the dark.
And now we had no place to live, since we didn’t know
How to live with each other.
Then one of the stumbling ones took pity on another
And shared a blanket.
A spark of kindness made a light.
The light made an opening in the darkness.
Everyone worked together to make a ladder.
A Wind Clan person climbed out first into the next world,
And then the other clans, the children of those clans, their children,
And their children, all the way through time—
To now, into this morning light to you.

RESISTANCE SERIES: DOGMA
The Clinton Street Resistance Series film on Monday night, March 18, is DOGMA.
The latest battle in the eternal war between Good and Evil has come to New Jersey in the late, late 20th Century. In what can only be deemed a comedy parable, two renegade fallen angels attempt to jerry-rig the entire cosmological system -- unless a rag-tag group of humans can stop faith. Bethany, the heroine of DOGMA, is a woman who feels her prayers haven't been answered when, out of nowhere, a heralding angel appears in her bedroom and declares her the potential savior of humanity. This abrupt meeting sets her off on an extraordinary journey of mystery, comedy and suspense as she is transported to a fantastical world of celestial characters and spirited adventure. Along the way she will meet up with a heaven-sent messenger, an apostle with a 2,000 year old beef, a hotheaded demon, a heavenly Muse and two unlikely Prophets known as Jay and Silent Bob as they each discover the power of their own individual faith.
Tonight's nonprofit partner is NOT OK PDX, a women-run non-profit organization in Portland, Oregon striving to empower service industry staff to recognize and interrupt sexual violence through its SAFERBARS workshop.

The master escape artist, Harry Houdini, stars in one of his few screen roles as Heath Haldane, secret service agent extraordinaire, who is hot on the trail of the counterfeiters who killed his father. It has action, adventure, romance and some of Houdini's signature escape tricks and stunts.
Join us at the next installment of Public Domain Xinema at the Clinton Street Theater with live music by Sonochromatic for Haldane of the Secret Service (1923) starring Harry Houdini and silent film star Gladys Leslie. The musicians of Sonochromatic will be in from Corvallis to accompany this silent classic on the big screen, plus newsreels and cartoons from 1923 to really take you back and a historical introduction from curator Ygal Kaufman.

Sundance Film Festival award winning film, ON HER SHOULDERS, documents the quiet persistence of Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad. It is a moving, sensitive portrayal of a woman - and a people's - perseverance.
Post-screening there will be a 30-minute open discussion period for those who want to stick around.
A donation/information table will be set up with more information about Nadia's Initiative, which advocates for victims of sexual violence and works to rebuild communities in crisis.

March 23 @ 7:30pm, we've got “5 ft Under: Ashes in Bones” -- a collaborative piece presented by Kennedy and Draven with Photography by Haley Jensen. A ritual happening embracing subjects such as gender exploration, body ambiguity, matriarchal trauma, and purification, this work combines elements of Butoh, Body Ritual movement, and experimental sound tapestries by “Mad Composer Lab.”
Thursday, March 28, Friday, March 29 and Sunday, March 31, we're hosting POW Film Fest, Portland’s premiere film festival showcasing films directed by women. Now in its 12th year, the festival features the work of some of today’s top women directors, while honoring the true pioneers and recognizing the next generation of leading women filmmakers.
The opening weekend for the 2109 Tulip Fest takes place March 23 & 24 in Woodburn, Oregon, just a short drive down the I-5. Stroll through 40 acres of stunning beauty, experience expansive views of vineyards, distant mountains, and a few mud puddles.
