Idaho State stays in house & in the family, names Interim AD Thiros as its permanent solution. ISU Prez Satterlee: "I have been impressed with Pauline’s ability to enact change and build a culture of excellence. The future vision of Idaho State athletics will be one that places an utmost value on integrity, always striving for excellence, and a constant focus on creating a positive and inclusive community." Thiros, who is the first female AD in Bengals history, "Oftentimes over the years, with budget constraints what they have been, and with opportunities maybe being perceived as limited, that we have tried to stay within a certain expectation or maybe have placed ourselves in a certain role that I don’t think matches our potential at all. I’m most excited about just saying, ‘Hey, let’s reject that, let’s reject those limitations, let’s figure out where we have to go, where we want to be, and let’s get there with a careful plan.' Let’s realize our potential because I think it’s crackin’ and I’m pretty excited to get there." (link)
A DI to DII move as longtime Morehead State AD Hutchinson heads south to take over at Lincoln Memorial. LMU VP for Athletics Goins points to Hutchinson's "comprehensive commitment to excellence, tireless work ethic, energy, advanced knowledge & student-athlete centered leadership philosophy" as reasons he fits for the Railsplitters. Hutchinson says the university "is blessed with visionary leadership and ambition," adds, "We will seek collective and comprehensive excellence in all we do." (link)
USC AD Swann in an interview with the L.A. Times' Markazi on Operation Varsity Blues, "I think everybody was blindsided by this. The fact that it was a senior member of the staff and also our men’s and women’s head water polo coach. … These are people that have been here a long time and people who had been here during difficult times and had seen bad things done and knew better. Everyone was completely shocked, caught off guard and taken by surprise." Swann says no one else knew about the scheme because former Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Administrative Officers/SWA Heinel controlled all "submitting of academic records to our admissions department." More Swann: "I have not considered resigning. I’m committed to this school and I’m committed to this job. This was an opportunity that presented itself to me. I never went out looking for this job, but this is a job I feel I’m prepared for. […] I’ve done a lot of things in my life that have given me experience in moving into this position. I felt like it would be a great opportunity. Do I want to do it forever? No. I would like to do it for 10 years. In corporate America they look at a tenure of a CEO and they say 10 years is about right. We have a great school and that’s why these people did what they did to try to get their kids into this school." (link)
Yale Prez Salovey on changes in New Haven due to the athletics-admissions saga, "Situations in which a recruited athlete fails to make a team will receive close scrutiny." Further, Salovey says Bulldogs AD Chun is working with Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Quinlan to "implement a code of conduct for athletic recruitment." (link)
MBB Drama: LSU student-athlete Smart was cleared by the school to play in a quarterfinal SEC Tourney game, also met with the media afterwards on the allegations surrounding suspended Tigers HC Wade, "No, sir, I had nothing to do with that." (link); Former Auburn AC Person pleads guilty on charges that include federal bribery. The Tigers now have a chance "to file a victim-impact statement in the case, which will give the school an opportunity to characterize the influence of Person's conduct. It will be interesting to see how they portray Person, the school's all-time leading scorer." (link); Virginia Tech AD Babcock does not believe there's any connection between Hokies HC Williams, the on-going test fraud that includes hooper insider Fox & the disputed ACT score of ineligible freshman student-athlete Nolley. Babcock fully expects Nolley to hit the hardwood next season. (link)
Pac-12 Commish Scott on the idea of a WBB Super Regional held in Las Vegas where all Sweet 16 teams would play for Final Four access, an idea popularized by broadcaster Antonelli, "She sent me her outline and I have talked to some of my colleagues about it. I think it’s a very creative and intriguing idea whose time may come soon. I think Las Vegas is one of the few places that it could makes sense. Multiple arenas, a lot of hotel capacity…one of the things our fans love about Las Vegas is the frequency of flights, it’s relatively inexpensive, well-located, easy to get to, experiences for all kinds of different price points. There’s no doubt it would be a fan favorite for folks. And the city has the capacity to handle event of that scale, magnitude and complexity. It would be very interesting to consider that. […] The idea of a 'Super Regional' is a bit outside of the box. But I think in women’s basketball, I’ve been an advocate for testing and experimenting with different formats. Sometimes it’s hard in an association like the NCAA to get people to be willing to test new concepts, because you need so many different people to buy in. But I’d like to see it happen." (link)

It's Personnel: Arkansas Asst. AD for Marketing & Revenue Generation Geren joins a handful of former Razorbacks in Lawrence as the new Assoc. AD for Marketing & Video Services at Kansas. (link); Hartford AD Gillespie adds former Saginaw Valley State Assoc. AD for Compliance Nyman in the same role for the Hawks. (link); For what it's worth, from radio sports talk host Hyams: "SEC men's basketball official Anthony Jordan, who had facebook post 5 years ago appearing to show he is an LSU fan, was suspended by SEC after the LSU-UT game Feb. 23. He has not called SEC regular-season game since nor will he call any games in SEC tournament." (link)
The Carousel: UNLV AD Reed-Francois will hire a new MBB HC, owes outgoing boss Menzies $800K, will use Eddie Fogler to assist with her search. (link); Nebraska AD Moos says he will wait until the Husker's postseason fate is determined before evaluating the MBB program. (link); George Washington MBB HC Joseph won't be back. (link); Stetson AD Altier in a Q&A on his MBB HC change. Says not seeing improvement was a big issue, and wants to "hire a person who fits that profile of what has been successful for us." (link); Austin American-Statesman's Davis says "sources at every level of UT administration" indicated Texas MBB HC Smart will be back next year, with AD Del Conte pointing to integrity as a key factor. His buyout is $12.9M. (link); Texas A&M officially relieves MBB HC Kennedy of his duties. $3.5M buyout, subject to mitigation. Per USA Today's Berkowitz: "So far, three Power 5 schools have committed to as much as $12.2 million in buyouts to fire men's basketball coaches this season." (link); With rumors swirling of his retirement, West Virginia MBB Huggins says there is "no chance in you-no-what that he steps away after a season like this." (link); Appalachian State AD Gillin on the hunt for a new MBB leader. (link); Fordham AD Roach sticking with MBB HC Neubauer. (link); Sources indicated UMKC MBB HC Richardson will not return. (link)
Quite a barnburner in Madison Square Garden last night as Seton Hall defeated Marquette in a game that featured all sorts of tension with nine technical fouls, three ejections, four foul-outs, 85 free throws, hand-shake line exchanges and, of course, an overtime period. Afterwards, CBSSports' Norlander reports "Marquette higher-ups were in a back-and-forth conversation in the hallway with Big East reps" about the officiating & then both teams closed their locker rooms to media, which led to social media push back. (link, link, link); The AP caught up with lead official Breeding after the game to clarify some of the drama. (link)
Cal Poly's Track squad has been suspended for seven meets & competitions as a result of allegations of hazing by older members of the program toward younger student-athletes. "An investigation by the university's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities uncovered team initiation events that included unsafe and inappropriate behavior, underage drinking, coercion to drink, forced exercising, and a scavenger hunt that included sexually explicit items." (link, link)
Notable Peoria Journal Star journalist Reynolds, who has covered Bradley athletics for 29 years, was told by Braves staffers he could no longer have added access to HCs & student-athletes due to not positively promoting the Bradley brand. Reynolds on an exchange with MBB HC Wardle, "He said I’m always looking for the negative and he’s been having this conversation (about it) with me. He’s had it three times and nothing has changed. He said something to the effect of 'We don’t want you around anymore.' It was surreal. I thought, 'Here was Bradley on the eve of one of its greatest moments in the last three decades.' They’ve won the Valley Tournament for the first time since ’88. I thought maybe we’re going to move past this." (link)
Former Xavier MBB student-athlete, NBA standout & current CEO of the Historical Basketball League West: "We’re just another option. They (the NCAA) have a model. There’s a traditional model in place, but we don’t feel that that model is equitable and fair. So we’re gonna create an opportunity for kids to make a choice. […] These players are generating quite [a brand]. Our pitch ... is that we’re going to offer you greater value so you can sign with a marketing agent immediately to begin to monetize your likeness." West says the league will begin play in 2020. (link)
ACC Commish Swofford & his ESPN partners roll-out more details on the upcoming ACC Network linear play. Most interesting were Swofford's comments that high-profile Duke-North Carolina MBB match-ups could find their way to ACCN in an effort to drive carriage & subscription. Swofford: "We got a lot of calls from people that couldn’t see it (Duke-UNC in the early '90s on ESPN2). The answer was you’d better get ESPN2 because there’s going to be a lot more games on ESPN2. So the principle is sort of the same." Notable media personalities Durham & Packer will handle a daily show from 7a to 10a from Packer's basement, plus there are featured films ready to go exclusively on the new outlet. (link); Two of the exclusive films: The Class That Saved Coach K & The Tournament: A History of ACC Basketball. (link)
Ivy League Executive Director Harris indicates she doesn't remember if the AD vote to transition the MBB Tourney to campus locations was unanimous, "even if I did, we don’t release votes." Harris notes it's simply more cost-effective to hold the event at member institutions, believes the smaller venues will still have enough seating & all gyms will create a hyped environment. Harris: "The tournaments were never about generating revenue. We want to cover our costs, and operate them in a cost-effective way, and we want to make sure ticket prices remain accessible to our fans. That this is something a family can come to. The costs go up to a great extent at a neutral venue." (link)
By all accounts, Furman MBB is squarely on the proverbial bubble & Paladins AD Buddie knows what it's like on the other side of the table as a member of the Baseball Selection Committee, "I get this in May, where I get 30 baseball coaches texting me their resumes and their brag points." Buddie on other post-season opportunities if his squad is left out, "We certainly think our body of work put us in a position to be a one or two seed in the NIT, which for Furman would be a pretty lofty goal. We've got our fingers crossed for the NCAA, and we'll be disappointed if we get overlooked, but I can't fathom us not getting into the NIT." (link)
Clemson AD Radakovich indicates he, nor any Tigers staffer, has direct involvement in the NCAA drug testing appeal for three Tigers FB student-athletes. The process is being led by the players' attorney & Radakovich does get periodic updates. "According to the (NCAA) spokesperson, an average of 40 athletes tested positive for diuretics, anti-estrogens or anabolic agents, including ostarine, in the year-round testing program each year through the past three years. Fewer than 10 athletes tested positive for that group of banned substances each year during the championship testing program. The spokesperson said approximately 8 percent of those cases were appealed successfully." (link)
South Alabama gets a $5M commitment from major university-wide donor Mitchell, whose name will be on the field at FB's new Hancock Whitney Stadium. The gift will be a challenge match with Mitchell matching dollar-for-dollar any donation to the stadium project in the range of $500-$25K per donor. (link); Thirty-nine former Florida student-athletes have contributed a combined $17.9M towards the three-tiered Gators facilities master plan. That is approximately $459K per former student-athlete. Wow. (link)
Also Noticed: Updated MBB comparative data. Will be updated again early this afternoon. (link); A new proposal from two Republican North Carolina state lawmakers would give public universities in the state the option to allow beer and wine sales at athletics facilities. (link); CBSSports' Dodd reports that Big 12 ADs were updated Thursday on results of the Alston decision, with still "lots of room for interpretation." (link); Hawaii MBB won't pursue a CIT berth. (link); Marshall MBB, on the other hand, has accepted an invitation to the CIT. (link); The NBA is selling 10-minute viewing passes that cost 99 cents via NBA.com or the NBA app. (link); Washington State FB will host Idaho in 2022 for a guaranteed $575K for the Vandals, and Northern Colorado in 2023 for $525K. Correction: Notable professor Ridpath calls Ohio U., not Ohio State, home. We flipped that around in a clip yesterday.
