President's Column

This past Sunday night, Tito Bradshaw, who owned the Bottom Bracket Bicycle Shop, died after being hit while on his bike in San Antonio. His death is at least the second death of a local cyclist killed by an intoxicated driver this year. Bradshaw's family and friends have started a petition to install bike lanes on the road where he was killed.

His death reinforces our need to continue to educate motorists about what it means to share the road and to support cycling groups that push for the changes required to make riding safer for cyclists. Please consider volunteering for or donating to causes that support these activities.

This year, a group of us will support one of the rest stops for the Wildflower ride. In exchange for our support, the Wildflower ride's leadership team agreed to place a flyer for our event, the Wheelmen 100, in each and every registrant’s package. Our participation at a rest stop is a great way to get additional exposure for our annual ride. We'd love to see many of their registrants riding in the W100! We’ll also have a W100 table set up at the end of the Wildflower. If you would like to volunteer to support our rest stop, please contact Tony Beauford.

During the first quarter of the year, we had several cyclists who were new to the area join us for some of our weekend rides. Based on what I saw, I believe that we’ve done a great job in making their experiences with the club a positive one. As a result, a few of those visiting cyclists have joined the club.

Since we no longer have paper maps for our routes, it’s essential that our ride starters pair a new cyclist with a member who knows the course or is leveraging RWGPS for turn-by-turn directions. This course of action seems to be happening regularly. Undoubtedly, it helps create a positive perception of the club. The board and I appreciate your willingness to do this.

See you on the road!
