Mess Dinner Reminder

Please don’t forget our Mess Dinner is scheduled for 31 March 2019. This is a formal event featuring a guest speaker and will be held at the LVIV Hall in Oshawa. Tickets are on sale now and you or your cadets can purchase them on any training evening. Last minute requests are not always possible, so please don’t wait.

Cadet Zone Shoot R.S. McLaughlin Armouries

Out of a total of 12 teams from army, sea, and air cadet units in Durham Region, one of our shooting teams placed second overall and two cadets earned medals for their individual performance. Sgt. Catherine Ye placed third overall in open shooter and FCpl Sharron Szcerba placed second overall in open shooter. We are now waiting to hear if either of our two shooting teams or any individual cadets have qualified for participation in the regional (provincial ) competition to be held at CFB Trenton in April.

Squadron Band Practice

Not everyone gets a chance to see and hear the squadron band except those that attend the squadron’s weekly training closing parade. We are fortunate to have a number of enthusiastic cadets in our band and we also have a dedicated staff with many years of experience to help train and develop our cadet's. The squadron’s music program is an important part of the cadet program and those in the world of music will be the first to say how important music training is in the development of a youth’s academic abilities.

Each one of the squadron’s band practices are now devoted to practice for the provincial band competitions which take place in the coming months. The first major cadet competition will be held in Trenton Ontario for all the squadrons.

If the squadron can be successful in this competition, we will move on to the Provincial championships which will be held at Canadian Forces Base, Borden. Cadets should have no doubt in their minds as to the level of professionalism that they will find in this competition.

To illustrate the level of ability and professionalism that can be achieved we have included a link to a video of the squadron band as it competed in the Provincial championships in 2013.

As cadets and readers may know 151 has been the top cadet band in the province several times and this has led to some interesting opportunities. In the photo that follows you can view our band presentation which took place at the Hamilton International Tattoo held in Copp’s Coliseum. The band has also played at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton.

Provincial band competitions are highly competitive and we know that all concerned will see that a maximum effort will be needed to make sure the band has another successful competition.

Tri Service Sports Competition - Ajax High School

This past weekend 24 of our cadets participated in a tri service sports competition involving cadets from all of the units in our area. Cadets competed in basketball, floor hockey, dodge ball and a tug of war competition. There were 10 cadet units in the competition and 151 came in second overall.

W/C Lloyd Chadburn Remembered

Each year the squadron invites Mrs. Karen Wingrove to come and talk to the cadets about Lloyd Chadburn. Karen is actually a cousin of Lloyd Chadburn and she has in her possession many of the letters and other interesting family items from the war years. This past Monday she met a number of the cadets to let them read some of the letters that Chadburn sent home to his family during the war and to show the cadets some of the personal family items that she has in her possession. It is not well known but the squadron also has in its possession many of Chadburn’s wartime photos.

The following photo shows Karen passing around some of the family photos, letters, and memorabilia.

Chadburn squadron is unique as few squadrons in Ontario if any have this type of personal involvement with their namesake.

Future Cadet Activities

Commanding Officer’s Comments

I mentioned in earlier Dispatches that we were fast approaching the “busy time”. Well it has arrived and we have a very full schedule from now until the Annual Inspection in May. After that, we still have a Year End Trip, Band, Drill, Marksmanship competitions, and summer camp preparations. We will require your support and dedication to successfully complete this training year.

Now more than any other time in the training year we will be asking the cadets to make commitments and to honour them when the time comes.

As you can imagine the Band and Drill Team have been practicing throughout the year but suffer from absentee cadets on a weekly basis. Now that we are nearing competition time we have booked extra time and special facilities to provide the cadets with the best chance at perfecting their routines. When a cadet is absent from practice the entire team is affected. Routines are difficult to perfect when empty spots exist.

The uniform standard is vital to our squadron’s esprit de corps and we are less than pleased with cadets that make little or no effort to reach the standard. It is not acceptable to have scuffed boots, wrinkled or a dirty uniform, incorrect placement of badges or an improper haircut. We demand and expect the standard as a method to build on a cadet’s pride and integrity. It is easy to be a slacker but considerably more difficult to rise to the challenge.

Team Commanders are required to contact their cadets each week. One reason for this call is to pass on vital information regarding change of plans or new activities. This is also a good time for the Team Commander to connect with the cadets and sort out any problems or issues. If your cadet is not receiving a call every week then please contact us so that we can remedy the situation.

We try to stay up to date with our web page calendar but there are times that things slip by us. Feel free to contact us anytime if you have questions or concerns. The best time to come in would be during any evening we are training. We know there are times when cadets misunderstand events or dates and are unable to provide the detail you deserve.

We look forward to seeing the cadets and parents at our Mess Dinner on 31 March 2019.

Have a great week

Major Weigel
