Welcome to new members!

Sustainable Communities welcomes all of our new members - we are glad to include you in our organisation and thank you for joining us in our efforts to live sustainably and care for the one planet that we have to live on.

Thank you to those who are planning and undertaking new sustainability projects. We look forward to sharing information with all our members about these activities as they progress.

We are a friendly bunch and hope to meet new members face-to-face at one of our events or meetings!

Recycling update from EastWaste

One Planet Market’s workshop on 16 March 2019 was provided by Megan Bekesi, Education and Promotions Coordinator of East Waste.

East Waste collects waste and recycling materials for seven member councilsin the eastern suburbs and hills. Megan developed the Why waste it campaign and Which Bin website to educate people about reducing waste and to encourage recycling.

The message is Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Compost, indicating that we need to value all the materials in our purchases, and not see them as waste to be discarded. These materials can be reused or go towards making new items.

Our sustainability projects

Sustainable Communities is supporting a number of projects that are aligned with our purpose and aims. We are enabling groups to undertake activities without having to establish themselves as separate incorporated organisations. They can benefit from our organisational structure that allows them to apply for and receive grants to get their activities underway.

The following are some of the new projects that we are supporting, some already commenced and others still in development:
  • Red Cross Climate Ready Packs - see  Climate Ready Communities
  • Resource Rhymes - developing a school competition to create songs, raps and poems about resource conservation and recycling in South Australia
  • Adelaide Hills Science Hub - addressing challenges of climate change facing Adelaide Hills communities with events that teach about about biodiversity, astronomy & ecology
  • Living Smart @ Upper Sturt Primary School - helping local communities to live sustainably
  • Plant Grow Harvest in City of Onkaparinga -  a workshop series to spread the sustainability message more widely in the south

Position vacant - Volunteer Workshop Coordinator

Sustainable Communities SA is looking for a person to organise a monthly workshop at One Planet Market, to increase the knowledge and skills of people in adapting to and living with climate change. Interest in and knowledge of adult education and sustainability is desirable.

We cover a broad range of interest areas:
  • Gardening and food production – includes honey, chooks, vegetables, fruit and nuts
  • Cooking and preserving garden produce
  • Reducing waste
  • Sustainable housing
  • Community connection
  • Repairing clothes
  • Nature in our local area – frogs, birds, butterflies, native plants
  • Other sustainability topics
The job involves consulting the One Planet Market community, identifying possible topics, finding workshop presenters, liaising with them and promoting the workshop through the market networks, media releases and social media.

One Planet Market is held at Payneham Community Centre 374 Payneham Rd Payneham from 9am to 12 noon on the third Saturday of each month.

Let's have another Repair Cafe!

Sustainable Communities SA is keen to establish a Repair Cafe at One Planet Market, similar to the Unley Repair Cafe that we are currently auspicing. This would be a great addition to the market.

We need someone to take on the task of setting it up. We will provide support to apply for a grant and will include a request for money so that we can pay a project worker.

UPDATE ON OUR PROJECTS
Unley Repair Cafe

Unley Repair Café is back for 2019 after a lovely summer break. Sessions continue to run monthly, 9.30am-12.30pm on the last Saturday of every month at the Clarence Park Community Centre.
Some number crunching showed that the wonderful volunteers helped save over 400kg of items from landfill in their first 6 months of operation (from April 2018). The Repair Café is always looking for session and admin support, and of course, repairers. If you're handy tinkering on anything from appliances, wooden items, bikes, shoes, clothes or jewellery (or something else!), the Repair Café family would love to have you. Get in touch with Ruby Wake - repaircafe@sustainablecommunitiessa.org.au

Essential Edibles Produce Swap

Essential Edibles Produce Swap is held on the first Sunday of each month at Joslin Reserve, from 9.30am. The swap takes place at 10 sharp. Items swapped and shared include home-grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, eggs, seeds, seedlings and preserves.

Seacliff Community Produce Swap

Seacliff Community Produce Swap has celebrated its first anniversary - congratulations! At the February Swap the tables were laden with fresh figs, stone fruit, pomegranates, herbs, cucumbers, quinces, eggs, seedlings, plants, grapes, freshly baked quiches, home made jams, chutneys, sauces and more.
Come along -  9.30am to 10.30am on the last Sunday of each month (September to May) at 40a Kauri Parade, Seacliff.
You are welcome to join our email list, or contact Emma - 0417 827 319 or emma@asimpleshift.com.au
