At long last, the Auto Alliance and IHS Markit updated the Advanced Technology Vehicle Sales Dashboard a few days ago with US sales data through December 2018. So I spent my birthday Saturday analyzing the data and creating some new charts, with more site table and chart updates to follow in the next few weeks.
In my post, California Reaches 7.84% EV Market Share for 2018; US Hits 1.97%, I share some insights and charts looking at:
- US Sales by Powertrain: 2011-2018
- US States with the Highest EV Sales
- California EV Sales and Market Share

EV Charging at Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Stations: Current State and Future Plans
Mass transit station parking lots are ideal opportunities to help solve the growing need for more EV charging stations, especially for EV owners without access to home charging. In my recent post, “8 Reasons Mass Transit Parking Lots Make Ideal EV Charging Centers,” I detailed why I believe transit stations can play an important role in the buildout of EV charging infrastructure.
In Northern California, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) commuters will likely increasingly be able to charge their EVs at a growing number of transit station parking lots. BART recently conducted two EV-related surveys and has begun a pilot charging station program at one of its stations. I reached out to BART with several questions and have included their answers in my lastest EVAdoption article:

What I'm Reading
More than a year ago I drafted but never published an article suggesting that the Tesla Model Y would be the most important car of the 21st-century. After seeing the photographs of the planned Model Y from last Thursday's reveal event, I’m less confident in that prognostication. The specifications are all rock solid, but in the end it appears that the Model Y is simply a roomier hatchback version of the Model 3 sedan. Super sexy it isn't, but normal it is (though it is growing on me, especially seeing this latest photo below). Perhaps that is a good thing? Only time will tell how important the Model Y is to mass adoption of EVs.
