SoCon Commish Iamarino is calling it a career at the end of June after 13 years leading the league & 22 overall as a conference commissioner (NEC before the SoCon). Iamarino: "There are family obligations that will increasingly demand more of my attention. I think the conference is well positioned to address the many long-range decisions it will face in the coming years. It’s been a privilege to serve the SoCon, but I feel this is the right time for me to step aside." (link)
Both Cleveland State Prez Sands & Cleveland Cavaliers CEO Komoroski, who is on the search committee for a new Vikings AD, believe CSU can be a solid all-around mid-major program. Former Missouri AD Alden is assisting with the process & points to MBB as the department's biggest asset, "getting the most out of if is critical." More Alden: "I think there's been somewhat of a lack of focus on determining what are our priorities, what are our resources and how do we dedicate resources to those priorities? I think there's been a lack of understanding and inclusion on those particular priorities." Sands wants a new leader who shares his "scrappy" attitude & one who can sell a vision to others. A new AD will be hired sometime this Spring. (link)
Bradley quickly walks back its media misstep by limiting additional access for longtime Peoria Journal Star headliner Reynolds. BU Prez Roberts says he was surprised by the reports as he "knew there were issues between Dave and Coach Wardle in the past and I was under the impression that those issues had been resolved." Further, Roberts notes it's not anyone's job in the media to promote the university, there's no university policy that limits access & all Braves employees will be "informed" that media should be treated in a non-discriminatory fashion. (link); For his part, here's the beginning of Reynolds' latest column, "After an intense 24 hours of statement-crafting and policy-making on the Hilltop, it’s time to party. Bradley received much unwanted national exposure this weekend from the social media reaction for the banning of this reporter from a media availability of the NCAA tournament-bound men’s basketball team. But the apologies and new policies of Saturday will take a back seat at the Renaissance Coliseum main arena Sunday afternoon. Yes, I will be there." (link)
Pac-12 Commish Scott & Colorado Chancellor DiStefano met with the media in Las Vegas. DiStefano on a possible equity sale, "I would say that we’re, after today, just beyond exploring. We’re actively moving forward reviewing serious offers for this opportunity." Serious offers are expected in a couple months time. Scott says the league hasn't decided exactly how much outside cash it's looking for, also notes an independent review of MBB officiating is on the docket. More Scott: "...we had an additional meeting with athletics directors where we were able to discuss some of the most important strategic and policy issues facing the conference that was very well received." (link - scroll down)
The BIG EAST sold out four of its five MBB Tournament sessions, a league first, as 98,782 entered Madison Square Garden over the past couple of days to take in the event. "The tournament averaged 19,756 per session over the course of the week, and filled Madison Square Garden to 99.7 percent capacity. For the first time since 2013, the tournament’s opening session was sold out." (link)

Highly-accomplished outgoing Wake Forest AD Wellman sits with AthleticDirectorU to discuss how leadership consistency, while continuing to evolve, has been central to his success with the Demon Deacons. Wellman: "While consistency is an asset, you can’t let it prevent you from being willing to change. [...] If people know that there is a consistent framework within their organization, they be comfortable with the freedom to make decisions on their own. [...] You want your core values to remain consistent. If you don’t have that foundation, then you don’t have much at all." Lots more. (link)
USA Today's Wolken wonders why everyone is so ready to change the one-and-done rule if it means missing out on transcendent talents like Duke student-athlete Williamson. Wolken: "Because while everyone agrees that Williamson’s presence has been good for college basketball — television ratings are up, social media is filled with his highlights and he’s driven ticket demand through the roof — he is churning through the amateurism machine at a time when the NCAA’s leadership is actively trying to ensure someone like Williamson never plays college basketball in the first place." ACC Commish Swofford: "I think it can help at times from a visibility standpoint, from a business standpoint and so forth. It doesn’t change my mind on how I feel about the one-and-done, that it’s not something that’s positive for college basketball. […] It’s almost an unfair question because we’ve had Zion. You ask me that about Kobe Bryant or LeBron James, who were never in college basketball, I don’t think you really miss something you never have. So if they’re not here, I don’t think it hurts." (link)
The Carousel: Tulane AD Dannen will hire a new MBB leader, "Whenever you terminate a coach, almost invariably you hire the opposite. I’m not saying we’re hiring the opposite, but my focus is going to be on sitting college head coaches, those who have been sitting college coaches and I’m sure there will be a couple of elite-level assistants in there as well. If I have 20 guys in mind, 15 of them will be coaching in the NCAA tournament next week in one form or another and the rest will have coached in the NCAA tournament. That’s my focus to start." (link); SMU MBB HC Jankovich will be back for the Mustangs. (link); The Athletic's Davis writes on what he's hearing around the industry. Virginia Tech's Williams to Texas A&M? Former Ohio State HC Matta to UCLA? What happens with Houston HC Sampson? (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz keeps us up to speed on all the MBB HC bonuses tied to winning conference tournaments. $30K for UC Irvine's Turner, $65K for Oregon's Altman, $10K for New Mexico State's Jans, $25K for Old Dominion's Jones, $51K for Buffalo's Oats, $15K for Montana's DeCuire, $10K for Prairie View A&M's Smith, $25K for Utah State's Smith, $100K for Iowa State's Prohm, $15K for North Carolina Central's Moton, $10K for Vermont's Becker. (link)
UCLA AD Guerrero announces the naming of the Women's Gymnastics floor after retiring HC Kondos Field as the Bruins sent their leader off in style with not one, but two perfect 10s on floor routine yesterday. Kondos Field on her 29-year career, one she nearly quit after just two seasons before reading John Wooden's book, "It opened up magically to his definition of success, which is success is peace of mind knowing you’ve done your best to be the best you’re capable of becoming So I thought, you know what, they hired me for a reason, I’m just going to be the best me I can be and let’s see how that works out. [...] This is Coach Wooden’s home that we all get to come visit. I think for the first time, I feel like it’s my home too." (link - article, link - video)
The New York Times' Borzi profiles Marquette MBB student-athlete Howard, who, for a year has regularly seen a licensed clinical social worker trained in psychotherapy to seek help for "balancing the daily demands of college life, managing class work and outside interests with basketball." Howard: "A lot of what I want to be remembered for here at Marquette is not for what I’ve done on the court, but what I’ve done off. I think my impact is made bigger when I do something for somebody else. ... A lot of people in my position wouldn’t want to say anything. It’s a duty of mine, to be in the position I’m in, to be able to raise awareness of these kinds of issues going on in our sport. I would be doing a disservice to the people around me and the people in the same situation as me if I didn’t speak up." Howard and MLAX student-athlete Singleton founded the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter on campus and he serves on the DI MBB oversight committee. (link)
761. That's the number of students California-based consultant Singer brags about helping get into colleges of their choice. The Washington Post goes deep on how then-Georgetown Tennis HC Ernst was involved as he played a part in getting 12 individuals admitted to the school for more than $2.7M in bribes. Ernst, who was the tennis coach for President Obama and his family when they were in the White House, was placed on administrative leave in December 2017 as the school discovered "irregularities in the athletic and other credentials" of two of his recruits. The probe found that he broke school rules, but did not uncover criminal activity. He resigned in June to take the Women's Tennis HC job at Rhode Island after receiving a positive recommendation from Hoyas AD Reed. Georgetown released a statement regarding that recommendation: "It was widely known that Mr. Ernst had been on leave since Dec. 2017 and was not permitted to coach students since that time. Any statement Georgetown made after asking him to resign focused on his athletic record only." Lots more. (link)
Also Noticed: Updated MBB comparative data as of yesterday afternoon. This is it, folks. Today's the day! (link); Georgia Southern FB HC Lunsford base salary will be $680K this season, a $30K bump from last season, while OC DeBesse and DC Sloan get $23K salary increases to $273K for the coming year. (link); "Friday’s Duke-North Carolina ACC Tournament semifinal earned a 3.0 overnight rating on ESPN, up 58% from the same matchup last year (1.9) and the highest Championship Week overnight ever on the network." (link); Can't say I've ever seen a runner rounding third base collide with the home plate umpire just steps after the bag (clearly the umpire was rotating his position, but THAT close to the 3rd base bag?!?), but it's exactly what happened in last night's Washington State-Arizona State matchup. Oh and it was the 9th inning of a close game. (link)
