USA Today's Wolken broke the news last night of the Sun Belt set to announce the hire of Atlantic 10 Executive Assoc. Commish Gill as the league's new Commish. Official word coming today. Gill will become the first African-American leader of an FBS conference. Stadium's McMurphy indicates Memphis AD Bowen & Sun Belt Deputy Commish Keene were also in the mix. CBSSports.com's Dodd says eight total leaders were interviewed. (link, link, link)
ESPN began its NCAA WBB Tournament broadcast by expressing contrition for accidentally leaking the bracket early. The bracket, which was displayed during a rebroadcast of a Sunday show breaking down the MBB bracket, was consequently revealed at 5PM instead of 7PM as had originally been scheduled. In a statement released by ESPN, the network said it "deeply regret(s) the error and extend(s) our apology to the NCAA and the women’s basketball community. We will conduct a thorough review of our process to ensure it doesn’t happen in the future." The NCAA then released a statement of its own which read, in part: "We regret the network’s mistake and are working with our partners at ESPN to prevent similar errors in future years. We look forward to collaborating with ESPN to bring fans exciting women’s basketball tournament coverage throughout the remainder of the championship." The MBB bracket, according to Yahoo’s Bushnell, is not delivered to CBS until about 30 minutes before the selection show airs. It is unclear whether ESPN commonly receives the WBB bracket hours in advance. (link); Here's the full bracket. (link); Here's the WNIT field. Niagara AD Gray has agreed to a five-year contract extension. Prez Father Maher: "Simon Gray has been an incredible leader on our campus and has demonstrated a clear vision [for the athletics department]. Simon has placed an emphasis on the student-athlete experience that has put Niagara University at the forefront of addressing and implementing initiatives for the improvement of student-athlete welfare." Gray added: "I am extremely excited to continue to lead the Purple Eagles. ... I pledge to continue to develop an environment that allows our student-athletes to compete at the highest levels." The Oregonian's Canzano continues his coverage of the Pac-12 & Commish Scott after last Saturday night's presser that included Colorado Chancellor & chair of the league's CEO group DiStefano. Of particular note, Canzano doesn't believe the FB officiating debate is over, plus, "It will be interesting to see if the athletic directors get more information about the financials of the conference. To this point, my AD sources say they’ve asked for, but haven’t received good answers about the expenses of the conference." Canzano also speculates travel expense numbers connected to Pac-12 Networks boss Shuken living in Southern California & regularly commuting to the Bay Area on a chartered plane "may leak as soon as May, conference sources tell me." (link)
The Chronicle of Higher Ed rapped with 20 Deans at elite institutions about Operation Varsity Blues. Dartmouth, Penn & Yale note a change is needed for the oversight of athletic recruiting (the other 17 basically didn't answer the question). Penn & Vanderbilt say broader reform is needed. Brown Dean of Admission Powell: "Our first step was to complete a case-by-case review of every varsity athlete admitted and enrolled as part of the athletic recruitment process over the last four years. That review generated no concerns — fewer than five recruited athletes did not ultimately end up on a varsity athletics roster, and in each case that was due to legitimate reasons such as a major sports injury. As we think of next steps, we are of course looking closely at all our existing processes to identify if there are ways to strengthen what we have in place. It’s too soon to speak definitively about what our assessment might identify or determine, but we are taking this very seriously." More. (link)
In an interview with Esquire, longtime ESPN MBB analyst Vitale discusses a number of topics, including the NBA’s age limit, about which he posits: "If a kid wants to go to the NBA, and that's his dream, that's his goal, and the NBA wants him, why not? … And in many cases, you know, they don't want to be there. The term ‘student-athlete’ becomes almost a joke. So let them go on and make their millions!" Vitale also asserts that it’s time to pay student-athletes, especially star players like Duke MBB student-athlete Williamson. Specifically, Vitale espouses letting players make appearances and endorse products. Doing so, he submits, would "get rid of all the dirty stuff behind the scenes." He adds: "Let's face it. You've got coaches getting fired for taking bribes, or to make believe and lie on an application that the kid's an athlete. It's a cesspool!" Full interview. (link)
NeuroLeadership Institute Diversity & Inclusion Practice Lead Smith, co-founder Rock & social psychologist/author Grant for HBR: How to Speak Up When It Matters. 1) Realize how psychologically difficult — and worthwhile — speaking up can be. ("Research on 'realistic optimism' shows that when people set out to do difficult, personally meaningful things, they’re more likely to follow through if they expect that the task will be challenging.”); 2) Work to lessen the social threat that speaking up creates. ("Social motivation comes in five flavors: status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness. […] When you’re speaking up to someone, any one of these five buttons might be pushed, but most commonly it’s status, especially when you’re communicating up the chain of command."); and 3) Make a plan. ("If-then planners are about 300% more likely than others to reach their goals. Even though you won’t be able to predict the specifics of every situation, creating a plan for how to speak up can significantly increase the likelihood that you do so when the moment presents itself.") (link)

Former NCAA staffer Nevius has started the 'College Athlete Advocacy Initiative' alongside ex-Wisconsin MBB student-athlete Hayes & former Michigan FB student-athlete Newsome. Initial funding is coming from the Urban Justice Center with the aim of offering legal advice to athletes & "pursue campaigns to help them share in the billions of dollars generated by college sports." Nevius: "The calls I've gotten in the last year convinced me this was needed. And every athlete I talk to says, 'What can I do about this?'" Abolishing the Letter of Intent is one key focus for the group. (link)
SBJ has released its Sports Business Awards finalists. In the 'AD of the Year' category, your finalists are Arizona State's Anderson, Washington's Cohen, Kentucky's Barnhart, Miami (FL)'s James & Iowa State's Pollard. Awards gala set for the 22nd of May in New York City. (link); Another key entry in the latest SBJ is media headliner Ourand's look at the ACC Network's linear pickup after DirecTV jumped on board. Ourand: "ESPN executives are expecting that big distributors such as Comcast, Charter and Dish Network will have a lot of pressure to carry the ACC Network when it launches this August." Ourand notes the three as particularly tough negotiators & how Comcast went a full first year without the Big Ten Network. (link)
Kansas MBB HC Self yesterday shot down rumors that he is the running to become the next Chicago Bulls HC, telling the Kansas City Star that the rumors are "far-fetched," adding: "I’ve never talked to anybody from the Bulls about any employment opportunities. They have a coach and I’m not a candidate for that position and will not be." Self then went a step further, asserting that as long as KU wanted to keep him he would be the Jayhawks’ coach next year. About the NCAA’s investigation into the FBI probe and if that might play a role in his purported desire to leave, Self intimated that "I wouldn’t run from that at all. Not at all. And I look forward to visiting (with the NCAA) and certainly the conclusion, and seeing it through. You can quote that. … My motivation is as strong as ever to be the Kansas coach, to further this program, and to see the situation with the NCAA through." Moreover, Self said this past year has motivated him to remain in the coaching profession for a long time. "I want it on record that I want to coach for a long time." (link)
Despite not being tied to a recent notice of allegations sent to the university, Georgia Tech MBB HC Pastner’s days with the university are likely numbered, according to The Athletic’s Schultz, who observes: "For the third time in Pastner’s three years, there has been a significant compliance issue with accompanying bad PR, which seems like a lot for a program that has finished 11th, 13th and 10th in the ACC the past three years." Additionally, Schultz posits that while the wrongdoing outlined in the NOA has not been linked directly to Pastner, it does reflect poorly on Pastner’s program as well as Yellow Jackets AD Stansbury and the university itself. Still, Schultz suspects that Tech will not move to part ways with Pastner this year without cause "because they couldn’t afford paying his buyout, let alone the cost of hiring a new coach." Complicating matters further, the NCAA investigation may take six to eight months, and Schultz thinks that it will likely undermine Pastner’s chances of winning Stansbury over. "Pastner’s building efforts will have been set back further, the brand will have been damaged by bad PR … There have been too many bad headlines in a short amount of time." (link)
More Personnel: Northern Iowa AD Harris appointed to the NCAA Division I Council. His term begins July 1 and runs through June 30, 2023. (link); Elon MBB HC Matheny will not return. (link); Richmond MBB HC Mooney will be on the Spiders' sidelines next year per AD Hardt. (link); Samford WBB HC Morris retires after 17 years leading the Bulldogs. On the MBB HC side, Houston's Sampson picks up $20K for a top-25 AP finish, Texas Tech's Beard $25K for a top-10 AP finish which brings him to $350K in bonuses this year, Virginia's Bennett with $150K for final AP ranking. (link); LSU FB HC Orgeron gets a $500K raise and two-year extension with new buyout and incentive numbers. (link); The USF presidential search is down to four finalists: Former Ole Miss Chancellor Vitter, Rutgers New Brunswick Interim Provost/EVC of Academic Affairs Blanchett, SMU Provost/VP for Academic Affairs Currall, and former Rutgers New Brunswick Chancellor-turned-Professor of Engineering Dutta. ECU AD Gilbert says his focus won't change with the exit of university Chancellor Staton, "What I would really convey as new leadership comes aboard is, 'Here is our plan’ and we want to work together and we want to partner and communicate.' We want to be part of the entire university community. [...] This really is my charge. This transition does not waver me from that stance at all." Staton on athletics from a release yesterday, "I am enormously grateful that Dave Hart accepted my invitation to serve as special adviser to the chancellor for athletics. Together, we have completed successful searches for a new athletics director, head men’s basketball coach and head football coach, and we’ve committed significant university resources to support our proud athletic traditions. I am confident that ECU athletics are in a good place and that our best days are ahead." (link); Staton's exit is yet another high-profile issue for the University of North Carolina System Board & per Inside Higher Ed, Chairman of the Board Smith has been pushing to replace Staton since 2016 when he was denied the opportunity to buy an apartment complex near ECU. Lots of drama it seems. (link)
Pitt will hold a "Nike Reveal" party on April 7th to unveil its department rebranding that includes new marks as reports continue to say the Panthers will return to the old school blue & yellow look. Pitt AD Lyke: "...thanks to a comprehensive study with our partner Nike, we are proud to unveil at Bigelow Bash a strong and unified visual identity. Our branding will pay homage to a proud past but with 21st century ambitions. It evokes our legends while anticipating future greatness. There is power in the Pitt brand and these colors and marks will maximize that strength for Panthers past, present and future." (link)
Former TCU FB stand-out Tomlinson launches 'The Tomlinson Student-Athlete Development Fund' "designed to support student-athletes from all of TCU’s sports programs with their careers and lives following their graduations." A 'Night with LT' event in early May will raise monies for the fund. Horned Frogs AD Donati: "It would’ve been easy for LT to write a check and, say, 'Hey, best of luck to you.' The fact that he’s here spending time with me, our student athletes, getting involved, rolling up his sleeves if you will … LT practices what he preaches." (link)
As of last Fall, Clemson is no longer participating in the Academic Common Market for undergraduate students & Tigers Baseball AC LeCroy thinks it could make the program's recruiting efforts tougher. LeCroy: "Our competitors all have it. It was something we kept putting on the table and finally got approved. It was great for us for the time that we had it. [...] We fight some challenges when it comes to outside money compared to opponents as far as financial aid that they are able to offer. This allowed us to hit certain areas and states that were already good for us for recruiting and allowed us to make it more affordable." (link)
San Diego Men's Tennis student-athlete Norfeldt suspended eight months by the international Tennis Integrity Unit after finding he wagered on 195 matches before he arrived to play for the Toreros. Norfeldt was not a participant in any of the matches in question. The suspension does not technically apply to NCAA competition, but USD will hold Norfeldt out until a full review of the matter. Also Noticed: Buffalo MBB and WBB combined for more than 100K in attendance this year, up from 70K last year. Season ticket sales are up 40% and sales at UB's team store went from $80K a year ago to $120K this season. The Bulls' estimated media exposure went from 500M people a year ago to 1.5B this year, thanks to 15 nationally televised games this season. (link); Arizona forms an Inclusive Excellence Council to "focus on increasing and supporting inclusion, building trust, and appreciating differences amongst our student-athletes within the athletics department." Kicked things off with a "Lunch and Learn" series during Black History Month. (link); The MBB Selection Show did it's best overnight rating (4.0) since 2014.
