From Mark McVeigh, Principal
Dear DBS Parents,
It has been a week that has been crammed full of activities and presentations that fully reflect the four pillars of the DBS vision.
Our Y3 & Y4 and Y5 & Y6 students have been given the opportunity to step outside their comfort zone, to take calculated risks, work in teams and practise leading. All of this took place on the highly enjoyable and outstandingly run residentials in the Khao Yai National Park. I would like to thank all the staff who supported these, particularly Mr and Mrs Higgins. We are also grateful to parents who recognise the benefits of this important aspect of a DBS education, many of whom seemed to be waving rather too enthusiastically as the buses drove their children away.
There have been wonderful assemblies this week: Ms Edward’s and Mrs Holman’s EY2 Ladybird and Glow Worm classes; Mrs McMillan’s Y4 Kingfisher class; and the Singing Assemblies involving most of the year groups. There was an abundance of creativity, confidence, and articulate presentation that would have made much older students proud.
We are grateful to Mr Mann, who orchestrated the EY Sports Day today. It was great to see staff and parents encouraging the students to give their best. Staying on the sporting theme, congratulations go to Kinjay in Y4 and Dragon in Y2 who were very successful at Bangkok Swimming 2019.
Yesterday, Mrs Mayne, Lisa and I visited the Khlong Toey Music Program. You will remember that DBS fundraised for this worthy cause, where music and art are taught to underprivileged slum community children. It was an uplifting experience, and I was very proud to be able to hand over a cheque for a significant amount of money to help with their mission.
We are holding a Principal’s Seminar at 8.30am on Wednesday 3rd April. This will be an opportunity to talk to parents about the strengths of DBS and present exciting news about future developments. The Senior Management Team and I will be available to answer questions, too. I very much hope that you will be able to join us.
Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,
Mark McVeigh

In DT, Y2 designed their own gliders. We thought about specific materials to use and created our designs using our plans. We then tested our gliders and evaluated them thinking about what we could change to make them even better.

During Thursday's EY2 class assembly, the focus was 'Understanding the World', with the Ladybirds looking at growing a seed and the Glow Worms looking at the life cycle of a ladybird. The Ladybird class then retold a familiar story called, “Jaspers Beanstalk” through actions and props whilst the Glow Worm class reenacted the life cycle of a ladybird through a short dance. Both classes then sung a song to thank all the parents for their continuous support. Well done to all the children on a fantastic performance!

The Y4 Kingfisher Class Assembly taught us all about the Shāng Dynasty in ancient China! The children looked at how a commoner discovered “dragon bones” by noticing the strange symbols and writing etched onto the bones, which led archeologists to excavate key artifacts from “Anyang” in the Henan province. They then explained how the artifacts helped us to understand the history and how it continues to influence us now. Lots of fun and enjoyment was had, explaining how an irrigation system worked via drama and a demonstration! And the assembly ended with a mini Kahoot! Quiz to test the audience!

Today our EY children enjoyed a wonderful sports day at the DBS Sports centre. They were able to show a wide array of sporting skills they have learned over the term. Thank you to all of the parents who came to support their children and also to those who took part! Another fabulous event for our youngest children.

RESIDENTIAL TRIPS TO KHAO YAI NATIONAL PARK
|
|
|
This week, the inaugural Y3/4 DBS residential camp saw 47 excited students and 6 staff make the journey to The Wild Lodge in Khao Yai National Park.
Once they had arrived and enjoyed a tasty lunch, half the students got actively involved in balancing on the low ropes and using their teamwork skills to solve physical challenges. The other half learned about the local fauna and wildlife whilst participating in a river scramble. The students came back and had a refreshing swim before taking part in a sing-song and marshmallow roast around the campfire. The day was topped off with a beautiful stargazing session before an early night, ready to swap activities and enjoy more fun the following day!

This week Y5 and Y6 students also travelled to Khao Yai National Park on their residential trip.
On arrival, half the students were involved in learning archery skills. They supported each other; praising personal achievements during the session. The other half undertook the challenge of the aerial assault course. Climbing the ladders and overcoming the obstacles was great fun and gave everyone, teachers included, a real sense of achievement. The students came back to enjoy a refreshing swim before taking part in a blind-folded night walk. There was much fun and laughter as they discovered all the creatures who came out at night.
The students cooked up a storm on Day 2. The first session saw the students preparing a traditional Thai cuisine dish, Larb Kai. This was followed up with jelly, made with butterfly peas - simply delicious! After a fulfilling lunch, the students took to the water in their kayaks. Their balance and agility was tested through a series of fun games and activities. The students learned about the importance of spacial awareness and balance. As with the previous day, the day came to a close with a refreshing dip in the pool, working up an appetite for dinner. The day came to a close with a traditional campfire; roasting marshmallows and singing well-known songs. As the embers of the fire faded away, the students settled into their beds; ready to return home.

This week, DBS visited the Khlong Toey Music Programme (KTMP) to present the cheque for the monies raised from last term's Denla Fest. Mr McVeigh, Mrs McVeigh and Mrs Mayne represented the school and met with the charity's founder Geraldine Nemrod, who told them about the project's history and their plans for the future. They were then taken on a tour of the school's facilities, met some of the staff and were treated to some musical performances from some of the children who attend the school. It was a real pleasure to meet the young people and a humbling experience to see the great work done by this charity, and we are looking forward to some exciting musical, artistic and social collaborations in the future.
