THE HIGHLIGHTS

The UK is scrambling.

THE BACKGROUND.

Back in 2016, the UK headed to the polls in a historic referendum to decide whether to ditch the European Union. And surprised everyone by voting to...ditch the European Union. Cue chaos. The country’s prime minister - David Cameron - said ‘welp, I’m out’ and resigned. Theresa May took his place. And promised to get everything wrapped up neatly when it came to Brexit negotiations. Something that still hasn’t happened.

THE HAPPENINGS.

The deadline for the UK to divorce the EU is just 17 days away. And the two govs still haven’t worked out a deal. You read that right. Enter: Parliament. Today, they’re expected to vote on May’s Brexit deal. ICYMI, this is the same deal Parliament shook their heads to a couple months ago - but May’s reportedly put together “legally binding changes” to beef it up and get skeptical lawmakers on board.

THE REACTION.

No one has any idea what’s going to happen today. Especially since tomorrow marks another big vote for Parliament - whether to ditch the UK without a deal. Yes, that’s the scenario that’s raising concerns of a collapsing economy for the UK. Reassuring. If both these votes don’t pass, Parliament will vote on whether to push back the deadline for Brexit - giving lawmakers more time to work things out. Options, options.

SO..?

The EU and the UK have been trying to figure out a deal for years. TBD on whether the two govs can get it together with only 17 days to go.

THE ACTION

USA: Recently, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said ‘what a loser’ and let the world know she thinks Prez Trump’s not fit to be prez. Then added that she’s “not for impeachment” because Trump’s “not worth” dividing the American public. This comes as Rep John Yarmuth (D-CA) - the chairman of the House Budget Committee - says impeachment proceedings are “inevitable.” Divided. Speaking of which, Dems are heading to Milwaukee. Recently, the Wisconsin city was chosen as the location of the Democratic National Convention in July 2020. Big deal, since this shows Dems are looking to campaign extra hard in the Midwest during this next election.

WORLD: Everyone is talking about the Ethiopian Airlines crash. Reminder: the other day, a Boeing 737 Max 8 crashed after taking off from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people on board - coming just months after another Boeing 737 Max 8 crashed and killed all 190 passengers. Now, investigators are looking into what may have caused the crash as multiple countries - not including the US - ground this plane type. In other news, yesterday, the US threatened to stop sharing intel with Germany if the country continues chatting with Huawei. You know Huawei for being labelled a national security threat by the US gov - something the Chinese telecom biz says is unfair. Now, the US is pressuring other countries to turn their backs on Huawei, too.

POLITICS: Yesterday, the US said ‘we’re out’ and announced they’ll be withdrawing the rest of their diplomatic team from Venezuela. This comes as Prez Nicolas Maduro blaming the US for a nationwide power outage that’s left at least 17 people dead. Meanwhile, all eyes are on Algeria. Quick refresher: Algeria’s had its current prez for a very very very long time. Something they’re not exactly happy about. Hint: the gov’s been accused of corruption - while the Prez hardly ever shows his face in public after suffering a stroke in 2013. So when he announced he’d be running for re-election, thousands of people took to the streets in protest. Now, the Prez is dropping his bid for another term - but delaying the election. Stay tuned.

“Please take me seriously” - a 10 year old boy, writing a letter to the CEO of Qantas (as in the airline) asking him for advice. Qan’t say no to that.
