Enjoy public speaking at its finest as six finalists from the fifth grade speech contest present their topics to a panel of esteemed external judges from the community. Every fifth grader will have the chance to speak in front of the audience, either as Master of Ceremonies, making introductions, or delivering dramatic readings. If you can't be here in person, you (or out-of-town friends) can watch the speech portion live on Charleston Day's Facebook page. No FB account necessary.

Fourth Grade Whangdoodle Video Project
spacer
The fourth grade recently completed a unique project as part of their study of the fantasy novel,The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews. In the book, characters must wear specially designed "scrappy caps" to travel by their imaginations to Whangdoodleland. In class, students decorated knit caps and wore them during reading time. They designed an imaginary animal who might live in Whangdoodleland and included details from the text to enhance their animal stories. Finally, they built shoebox scenes of Whangdoodleland that were used as the background for a green screen video to present the animal stories. Many thanks to Mrs. Donia Teagle for her help in making the videos! To watch a sample video by fourth grader Daisy, click here.

Basketball Awards Assembly
spacer

Basketball, sportsmanship and teamwork were celebrated at Assembly Monday morning as the 198 participating players were recognized. Charleston Day's 21 basketball teams won two thirds of the games played, resulting in four conference champions, one conference runner up and three undefeated teams. More than the numbers, teamwork and sportsmanship were celebrated as, one by one, the coaches highlighted the traits that distinguish Charleston Day School players: disciplined, coachable, encouraging. Congratulations to all who participated and to those who won All-Conference, Coach's, Scorpion, or All-Academic awards! View the list of awards in grades 5-8 here.

Congratulations also to eighth grader Pierson Tobin who received the Spirit of the Scorpion Award. This award recognizes a player who consistently demonstrates the tenets of our mission: Scholarship, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility. Read more on our website.

CDS Bookworm's Book Exchange and Sale
spacer

The annual CDS Book Exchange and Sale will take place Wednesday, April 3 – Friday, April 5. Please start gathering your outgrown children’s books for donation and label your bags/boxes of donated books with your child's full name and grade. Books will be collected during morning carpool on Monday, April 1 through Thursday, April 4, OR you may bring your donations to the Library during school hours on those days.

  • For every two books a student brings, he/she may get one book free. The more you give, the more you get!
  • When you donate a book, you are helping your Blue or Red Team – one point for each book.
  • Hardbacks will be on sale for $1.00 and paperbacks for $.50 - CASH OR CHECK ONLY.
  • Proceeds will go towards the purchase of new books for our library. Books that are left over will be donated to Book Angels.
  • Sixth graders will be helping with this as a Community Service project. They will assist with collection in carpool line and sorting. Their donations will be put aside exclusively for Book Angels, a charity for at-risk public schools in the Charleston area for special K-8th grade classroom lending libraries. However, sixth grade students are still eligible for getting one book for every two books donated.
