This week on the construction site of the new bus barn, we've seen the addition of roof beams with the use of equipment lifts.

There's also been a fair amount of ground movement and things have gotten quite muddy in the surrounding areas.

This year’s JV team was a tight knit fun group of young men that came everyday looking to get better at the game of basketball. Top to bottom total team effort in going undefeated in league play this year which was a goal set by this year’s team early on in November. The future is bright for the Waynesville Basketball program.

Freshman Recap
This year the freshman basketball team was full of ups and downs. The Freshman Spartans ended the season 8-10. The bright spots of the year shined bright with upcoming leaders, hard work, and dedication by all eight of the freshman boys. The Freshman boys got better every day in not only basketball but maturing to become young men. Welcoming in three new comers to the school and team this year, the boys that have stayed in the program welcomed them with open arms and flourished. Good things are coming to the Spartan program!

READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY

On March 1, Waynesville Elementary celebrated Read Across America Day together.  Each grade level had their own special "dress-up" day:  Kindergarten students wore hats, first graders dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss character, second graders dressed in many different colors, third and fifth graders enjoyed sporting their craziest socks, and fourth graders relaxed in pajamas/comfy clothes!  Some classes had special guest readers or enjoyed special stories.  The most exciting surprise occurred when each grade went into the gym where every single student was presented with a brand new book of their own!  Kindergarten, first, and second grade students received "A Bad Case of Stripes" while third graders went home with "Frindle."  Fourth and fifth graders were given a copy of "The BFG."   Well over 600 books were distributed to celebrate our love of reading here at Waynesville Elementary!  Many thanks to our fantastic PTO for making this gift for our students possible.

Happy Reading!

Melissa Ferguson, Grade 4 ELA

Student Spotlight for Community Service - Clellon Tamme (9th Grade)
My name is Clellon Tamme, I am a 9th grade student at Waynesville High school. I decided to do a community project to help kids with sensory issues that involves tennis balls. As hard as it is to believe, for many kids with problems regulating sensory input, something as simple as gluing tennis balls on their chairs could change the way they learn.

The hairs on the tennis balls help kids with disabilities such as autism, down syndrome, and sensory processing disorder because they provide a new sensory texture for the students, and those sensory inputs could change the way that student learns. That simple sensory change can help the student become more patient, and help them to focus and follow directions. Other students find simply feeling the tennis balls with their hands can help them.

In my research I have discovered that these chairs are in high demand and I would like to see more schools trying this out with their students. I would like to give a thank you to the Fabric Shack in Waynesville for donating all the fabric for my project. Also, I would like to thank The Tom Harrison Tennis Center for donating all the tennis balls. Thank you also to the Suittor family at Designs Now for donating Waynesville patches to give the chairs some extra school spirit. Lastly, I would like to give a big thanks to Mrs. Karyn Phillips at Waynesville Schools for giving me the opportunity to do this project. Thank you to everyone who helped, without you guys this project wouldn’t have been possible.

I hope to see in the coming years the children getting use out of these chairs and the chairs helping them, I would also like to see other schools trying this out in the future, possibly changing the way students with these disorders learn forever.

Wayne Local is pleased to announce the appointment of William (Joey) Carter to the National Technical Honor Society at the Warren County Career Center in Power Systems.

Joey joined 70 other seniors into the National Technical Honor Society on Feb. 28.  A ceremony with family, friends and associate school administrators and counselors was followed by a breakfast prepared by Culinary Technology students.

To qualify, students must have a 3.5 Grade Point Average for three semesters during the two years at WCCC or its satellites. In addition, a student must not have a semester grade that is lower than a “C” at any time. The student must also meet 95 percent attendance for the two years with no more than a total of 15 days absent, and must have no credit deficiencies toward obtaining a high school diploma, nor any out-of-school suspensions.

What is the Seal of Biliteracy?

This year, Wayne Local School is offering for the first time: The Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by our school in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.

Why is the Seal of Biliteracy Important?

The Seal of Biliteracy provides evidence of world language skills that are attractive to future employers and college admission offices. Also, a notation can be made on the student’s transcript and a seal can be given on their high school diploma, marking their achievement.

Wayne Local schools is using a nationally known company called Avant. Students and their families will purchase their assessment from Avant’s online store, and our staff here at Wayne Local will proctor and administer their assessment for them.

If there are any questions about The Seal of Biliteracy, please contact:

Warren County Crisis Text Line:
Crises aren't "9 to 5" happenings. They sometimes come on when it's not easy to pickup a phone and call someone.  But you can text for help at any time.  Chat with a trained person by texting "4hope" to 741741.  That person will help you de-escalate and can offer information about local resources where you can find in-person help if needed.

The Crisis Text Line is always there for you, 24/7.  Just send a message (text 4hope to 741741.

Wayne Local Schools is expanding its services with The Education Connection (TEC) to include a Safety/Bully Tip Line.  When you witness verbal, written, physical, or electronic abuse, speak up!  If students hear or see suspicious behavior from another student, they should not ignore it.  We encourage all students to report any concerns about another student or the safety and security of Wayne Local School District.
Anyone can report anonymously a bullying/safety issue by calling the TEC tip line at (513) 855-4350 option 7 or by going online at waynelocal.tipline.info.   The tip line will also allow you to choose an incident number so that you can receive an update on the status or provide new information for this incident and still remain ANONYMOUS.

The information will be immediately forwarded to the proper authority.  All reports are taken very seriously.
There are posters displayed in all buildings with tip line information to remind students to always adopt the mindset of “if you see something or know something, say something.”

WELLNESS NEWS

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the perfect time to get screened if you’re over the age of fifty. Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the sec-ond leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

Every year, about 140,000 Americans are di-agnosed with colorectal cancer, and more than 50,000 people die from it. But this disease is highly preventable, by getting screened beginning at age fifty.

Getting tested can liter-ally prevent cancer before it starts. Testing can identi-fy problems and find growths before they be-come cancer. And if co-lon cancer is found early, you have a good chance of beating it with treatment.

You can reduce your risk of colorectal cancer by eating right, maintaining an appropriate body weight, limiting consumption of alcohol and high-fat foods, and becoming more physically ac-tive. But of course, don’t forget to also get tested for colon cancer!

If you are 50 or older, talk to your doctor about getting tested. For more information, contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
