March 2019 Braking News
from the Rockland Bicycling Club

Here are Five Things to Know this month about riding in and around Rockland County.
  1. RBC March Meeting: Spring Tune-up. Has your bike been hanging in the garage for the last three months? Was your New Year’s resolution to ride more this year or learn to ride with a group? Join us for our first monthly meeting and ask the experts how you should get your bike and your body into bike season shape. Dreaming of a new bike or helmet? Find out what’s new this year. Wed March 27, 7p at 9W Bikes, 530 N. Highland (9W), Upper Nyack.

  2. New 2019 RBC rides. Here's what we are thinking. But we want to know, what do you think? Make yourself heard. Reply to rocklandbike@gmail.com or share your ideas at the March 27 RBC meeting.
  • Tour de Rockland. Explore all of Rockland County on these Saturday rides located in each of our five towns. Earn a coveted Tour de Rockland prize by riding in all five.
  • Harriman “Sleep in” Saturday rides. 10a starts in Harriman with differing routes and paces.
  • RBC Century training rides. Get yourself in shape for the long rides by building miles and time on the bike in weekly increments.
  1. Advocacy update:
  • Check out Elizabeth Fisher's op-ed in Nyack News And Views about why the Mario Cuomo Bridge Shared Use Path Hours Should Be 24/7 because it's a crucial to kick starting bicycle commuting in the Lower Hudson Valley.

  • Northern Valley Greenway: RBC member Jesse Levin attended the March 5 NJ DOT open house about this planned extension to Orangetown's Clarke Rail Trail into North Jersey. The session covered: existing conditions; three proposed designs; intersection concepts (grade crossing, bridges and tunnels) and visioning (adding benches, art, landscaping, multiple varied surfaces). Thanks to Jesse for sharing this update!

  • Over 3300 people have already signed the Seven Lakes Drive Bypass petition. Have you signed? Join the effort to make it safe (and legal) to cycle Seven Lakes Drive at the Route 6 roundabout!
  1. Spring Rides in the NY Metro Area
    • Tour de Franklin Charity Bike Ride and Walk - Somerset, NJ, Sunday April 28, 2019. Bike routes of 66, 40, 25, 10 miles.
    • Tour de Staten Island - Staten Island, NY, Sunday April 28, 2019.  2,000 cyclists coast through the borough’s most breathtaking and lesser-known scenery on the cusp of Spring. 35 and 50 mile routes.

  2. RBC Winter Hike: A polar vortex isn’t enough to keep RBC members trapped indoors on their trainers. Several members found a way to keep in shape while enjoying the fellowship of the club.  This winter cross training was a hike from Upper Nyack over Hook Mountain to Rockland Lake, then back along the Hudson.  Like on any club ride there was a bit of trash talk, as Roseanne chided the men for dropping the pace behind the women. We’ll plan to make cross-training events like this a regular part of the club calendar next winter.

Help Wanted! The RBC is seeking volunteers to help us with this newsletter and our website. Also, we are always looking for new ride leaders and new rides and routes, too! Email rocklandbike@gmail.com to get involved. Until then, Ride Safe!
