From the Office
Hi Everyone
Happy Pi Day everyone! I think we all could use a mathematical excuse to eat sweets this week. Following that theme I have picked the pies of amateur baker and writer Lauren Ko to feature. Her complicated, colourful, geometric work is edible artistry. I thoroughly enjoy her complicated basket weave designs. I am assuming she must have a lot of parties because no one could ingest that much pie and live. In high school we had to do a art as food project, I re-created Van Gogh's sunflowers with cake, mint shoestring licorice, mini donuts and almonds, it looked good; tasted weird. In my family pies are for holidays, but what a lovely world it would be if there was a just because pie. Perhaps there should be a day of each month that is for pies, surely 12 pies a year won't kill a person. Does your creativity spill into the kitchen? How would you combine your craft skills with food?

Joe and Gudi Pach of TerraBijou have been a wonderful part of Craft Nova Scotia shows, the Designer Craft Shop, and the greater craft community for many years now. The staff, volunteers, and members of Craft Nova Scotia are sending healing thoughts their way as they navigate Joe’s recent cancer diagnosis.
“If you’ve been to a craft show in New Brunswick in the past 10 years, chances are, you’ve met Joachim Pach, better known as Joe. He’s pretty unforgettable – friendly and always ready to show kindness to friends and strangers alike. Now, it’s our turn.
We don’t yet know what kind of treatment Joe will need over the coming months, but we do know there will be countless trips into the city, special accommodations for Joe, who can’t climb stairs due to the cancer in his leg, and a huge loss of income for them both. By raising funds for Joe, we hope to ease some of the stress and financial pressure he and Gudi are facing together, along with this challenging illness.
Thanks for taking the time to read Joe’s story. He’s a kind, compassionate, funny and supportive friend, and any support for Joe and Gudi would be truly appreciated.”

Contemporary Camouflage
Rebecca Hannon
March 8th - April 28th
A dazzling display has taken over the Mary E. Black Gallery. Local contemporary jeweller Rebecca Hannon has been playing with notions of concealing-and-revealing following her research into the extra ordinary history of Dazzle Camouflage used in WWI. This bright and visually stimulating camo was designed to confuse the senses of three dimensional forms and distance. Rebecca Hannon will envelope the viewer in an immersive installation, covering the walls with patterns of Dazzle Camo to create a back drop for her graphically stunning jewellery.

In case you missed it this week CBC's The Passionate Eye had an interesting episode of the environmental havoc created by the fashion industry, definitely worth a watch or a re-watch.
Seattle-based pie baker Lauren Ko has a multitude of non-edible inspirations that influence her creative pastry designs, including textile patterns, architecture, and string art. These elements are woven into her colorful, and often geometric, fruit pies and tarts topped with thin, undulating strips of apples, precisely placed pomegranate seeds, and triangles of radiating strawberries. Often Ko will color a portion of her dough with natural food dyes like beet butter to add even more color to the finished dessert. You can learn step-by-step instructions for how Ko creates her enticing sweets in this video made by Tasty. Read more at Colossal see more of Lauren's amazing work on Instagram.
