2018 ITHACA BIKE SURVEY RESULTS
DID YOU KNOW?

  • 77% of people agree or strongly agree that there should be more bike infrastructure on local streets
Preview of Page 1 of Exec Summary

In February 2018, Bike Walk Tompkins and ITCTC commissioned a statistical survey of bicycling use and attitudes in and around Ithaca. We were encouraged to see more biking activity than anticipated. Our main takeaway is that a significant number of people bike locally, a larger group of people want to bike more often, and an even larger group of people want to see bicycle infrastructure in and around Ithaca.

Last April, Ithaca was the first city in New York to bring in a dockless bike share with the help of Lime. With 85,000+ rides and 15,000+ riders in and around Ithaca, we are amazed by the way the community has embraced bikeshare in both ridership and spirit. We've also been impressed with the local operations of the bikeshare system and the seamless rollout of Lime-E pedal assist bikes, which have proven to be very popular even in winter.

Recently, Lime proposed to add e-scooters to their local fleet in the City of Ithaca, and members of the City's Mobility, Accessibility, and Transportation Commission (MATCom) have provided reasonable guidelines for an e-scooter pilot project. Based on our experience with bikeshare and our observation of other cities that have e-scooters, we encourage the City to start an e-scooter pilot following the guidelines that MATCom proposed.

Getting through the winter in part meant finding new books and shows to keep us entertained 'til spring. I recommend Call My Agent – a Netflix comedy series from Paris about the agents behind the stars.

I was gifted the cookbook Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat over the holidays and I love it because it breaks down the elements of good food. Not into reading? Definitely watch the Netflix show of the book; Nosrat's expressions when she tries food are a joy to watch.
