Dear Parents and Caregivers,

A huge congratulations to our 2019 Student Council who were elected last week. They are:  Jack Plowman, Henry Fisher, Rafi Grocott, Luca Jamieson, Madi Kensington, Layla Woodland, Harriet Barter and Luci Hollister.  We wish them all the very best in their new student leadership roles.

We have had the pleasure of hosting both the Ruapehu and Nagauruhoe swimming sports meetings this week. These meetings have always been a highlight on the school calendar and this week was no exception. Congratulations to all the students who 'gave it a go' and to all those competitive swimmers. We have some very talented swimmers.

You may have noticed that our new basketball hoop has been installed on the top court and our new playground equipment is currently being installed. These items have all been purchased from the PTA fundraising efforts last year. I would like to thank Andrea Finlay and the outgoing PTA for their outstanding work and commitment to our school. Your efforts are most appreciated and will be enjoyed by the students at school.  Welcome aboard to our new PTA members and thank you for volunteering .

Thank you to the Board of Trustees for investing in our students' digital technology futures. 118 new Chromebooks have been purchased to supplement the current supply of Chromebooks in the classes. Each class from Year 3 to 8 will now have 8 permanent Chromebooks to help support their learning. We are still however encouraging our BYOD policy in these levels.

The installation of the irrigation on the backfield should be completed by the end of this week. My apologies for any inconvenience this might have caused people in coming to and from school. We look forward to drier fields during the Winter season.

Kind regards,

Gary Pasfield

School Donations
Don't forget that the discounted rate of $230 is available if you pay before 31 March.  We will be doing our annual phone call reminder shortly to make sure nobody misses out on the discount.

Information Overload
Our re-vamped website has lots of helpful sections. There is a quick absence reporting form on the front page. Also, look under the 'Information' page for all sorts of useful things. For example, the 'Letters Home' section has all recent communications in case you have missed something and there is a section for 'After School Activities' in case you are looking for what else goes on at school after lessons have finished.
Teacher Union Meeting
Our teachers will be attending Paid Union Meetings on 21 March.  These meetings will be staggered throughout the day so classes can continue.

Absences
If your child is absent from school for any reason you must make contact with the office before 9am - this is for your child's safety.

Please note that there is an AED (automated external defibrillator) in the school sickbay.  This is a device which delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart.  The shock can potentially stop an irregular heartbeat and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest.  This device is available for use by anyone who has a cardiac emergency in or near the school during school hours.

There is a free AED app available for your phone which will tell you where your nearest AED is in an emergency.

Ice Cream Tubs & Plastic Bags
If you have any spare we would really appreciate it if you dropped them into the office.
The weather was perfect for Tongariro Team's Swimming Sports.  Our swimmers gave it their all and it was wonderful to see such strong support on the sideline.
The Ngauruhoe Swimming Sports was split over two days due to bad weather.  Congratulations to all our winners and especially to the swimmers who made it through to the Kaipara Swimming Sports.
Our fantastic new adjustable height basketball hoop arrived last week!  Thank you to everyone who supported the PTA fundraisers which made installing this awesome equipment possible.
Drainage work has now begun on the back field.
We are lucky to have such a big green space at school and this work will mean we will be able to use it so much more this winter.
Two of our students, Zoe and Cooper, got to meet the Prime Minister on Saturday at the Kumeu show.  Ms Adern was very friendly and asked the children questions and answered anything they wanted to know.

Student Voice
Mr Stenning's Room 15 Class experienced an impromptu entomology lesson when a large wasp nest was removed from a tree in the school grounds.  The class used their researching skills to find out all about wasps and their life cycles.

PTA UPDATE
PTA (Parent/Teacher Association) AGM March 2019
What a great turn-out at the PTA AGM on Monday night!   Thanks to all who attended.  It was really wonderful to see so many new faces keen to get involved and also to have such a great mix of parents from established local families as well as parents who are brand new to the area and school.

We said farewell to several PTA members including Andrea Finlay, Tanya Franklin, Louise Banham, Jacqui Richmond, Justine Hall, Tania Christiansen, Helen Dean and Kanchana Hoy who have all contributed so much of their time and energy.  We thank them for the legacy they have left and look forward to continuing their good work.   The PTA voted to appoint Bronwyn Wilson-Vogler as Chairperson, Sam Perkins as Treasurer, Ashley Kerlin as Secretary and Jasmin Nicholson as Media Liaison.  Congratulations to each of you and a big warm welcome to each new PTA member.  We really look forward to sharing and implementing new ideas as well as continuing with the favourite events such as Ag Day, School Disco, Greats and Grands day etc. as well as the up-coming Mad March Fun Run and Golf Day where we really draw on the support of local businesses and the wider community.

Jasmin Nicholson says “I've gone and dunnit! Last night I went along to the PTA AGM and signed up, I feel like a grown-up now!  I’m looking forward to working with the school, the PTA and the local community to roll out some really neat events that will benefit our children. Can I just say though that WE NEED SOME DADS!  We’d really love to have some fellas put their hand up – your input would be invaluable. Don’t be shy now!”

Did you realise that you don't have to be a signed-up member to help out?   If you have any skills, contacts, resources, ideas or just time and a pair of hands please come along to the meetings anyway, you'll be 'in the know' and you can pick and choose which events you could help out with. Don't wait for one of us to tap you on the shoulder (but be prepared for that too!).

For the low-down on how the PTA works please check out this link https://www.waimauku.school.nz/pta  All are welcome to attend the next meeting which will be held on Monday April 8, 9am in the staffroom.

Golf Day
On Thursday 28 March we are holding our annual Ambrose Golf Tournament at Muriwai Golf Club.  Shotgun start at 10am.  This event is now fully sold out so a BIG thank you to all our supporters.

Fun Run
Please lock in Friday 29 March for the bi-annual Waimauku School March Madness Fun Run at Glasgow Park (Pony Club grounds), starting straight after school finishes.

Register your child/ren on KINDO, start rounding up sponsors and planning crazy costumes!  The course will have a few obstacles and the children will need to complete as many loops as they can within the timeframe allowed.  Sponsorship can be per loop completed or a fixed amount for participating.  A grand prize will be awarded to the child who raises the most funds but we will also have lots of spot prizes for best effort, best costume etc.  There will be food and drinks available to purchase, raffles and music!  It’s a fabulous family fun afternoon and every dollar raised helps the school.

At the first fun run in 2017 we raised enough funds to complete repairs on the giant slide – that was an awesome result!   This year funds raised will go towards repairs/replacement of other playground equipment.  Please keep an eye out on the school facebook page and newsletter for more updates.   We look forward to seeing you there!

Entertainment Books
Entertainment Books will be for sale again this year so please ask your friends and family to purchase their digital or hard copy from Waimauku School.  There will be advance copies available, please contact Anita if you would like one.
