"Mathematics has beauty and romance. It's not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It's an extraordinary place; it's worth spending time there", Marcus du Sautoy.

Now for an update on the beautiful mathematical world, along with a few other things:
  1. You may have heard that Maths Month has arrived. It started with a launch event full of maths busking this week and our own Festival of Triangles in ongoing. There is a whole calendar of activities with places (all funded) available for schools, as well as top maths tips for parents and resources to help run your own maths event. Highlights coming up include a fun session for year 7 & 8 pupils that stretches shapes, surfaces and our understanding of geometry and an interactive show for year 9 & 10s of maths games involving money.

  2. (Perhaps) the highlight of Maths Month is the visit of Bobby Seagull - of University Challenge, BBC2 and Maths podcast fame - on the 26th March. Bobby will be telling us all about his love of maths and how it is vital to our understanding of the world. Free tickets still available, but are going very quickly. There may also be prizes....

  3. Onto other things, and the Accelerate programme is now up and running in Scarborough, helping early career teachers with support to develop their practice and improve outcomes for learners. Sign up here.

  4. Our Stories - our Literacy Hub - would like to know all about your favourite children's books to include in a list of ithe Top 100 Reads for Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.

  5. Early years setting are invited to nominate a strong practitioner to undertake a fully-funded level 3 qualification in supporting children and young people's speech, language and communication skills. More here. We'll be getting in touch with settings soon also about follow-up CPD on supporting sustained shard thinking in the early years.

  6. Yet another big event is coming up on 28th March, when Tom Sherrington arrives in Scarborough to talk about evidence-informed teaching. Tom writes the popular blog teacherhead.com. Book now

  7. Over 30 young people from Scarborough 6th Form took part in the first urban model of National Citizen Service. Students headed to Newcastle to explore the city and take part in teamwork activities. Participation in NCS from 15 - 17 year olds across the Coast continues to grow - young people can sign-up here.

  8. Future First is working with schools to help develop alumni networks. They would like to hear from former students who can share their experiences of work and the different career paths they have taken. Alumni wanted from Caedmon College, Scalby, Graham and George Pindar schools.

  9. Funding is available from the Two Ridings Community Foundation through a couple of live funds - Community First and Arts for Change.

  10. And finally, some other stories since last time - Radio York kicked-off Maths Month with tricky maths puzzles, federation at two Whitby schools, developments at two Scarborough secondary schools, more funding from the Sirius Minerals Foundation and this video on diversity created by Creative Briefs and the children of Briercliffe Children's Centre.
