This Week at Canterbury

Second Sunday in Lent, March 17, 2019

Father Ted will be away at his annual retreat on Sunday March 17.
The Rev. Michael Drinkwater will preach and preside for the two morning services.

8:00 am   Quiet Communion
9:00 am    Adult Formation: Language and Privilege
Language as a cultural phenomenon generally serves at least two purposes.  The first and some might even say the primary purpose of language is to communicate.  There is, however, an additional purpose in language, especially speech.  Language is also frequently tied to the creation of identity.  What does the language we use every day say about who we are?  What does it say about how we think of others?  And what does it say about our faith?

10am               Eucharist with Music
5pm -7pm       Todos Dinner and Eucharist. (Pastor Bre Roberts (Luther House) presides)

Pray the Way of the Cross with Iconography from Canterbury member Ruth Meredith

"This Lent we are using Stations of the Cross which were inspired by the Holy Spirit. With the help of other people at Canterbury, I created these stations in 2016 while I was grieving for my mother who had just died 5 months before.  I found this project was a great help in healing that loss. The stations reveal how art has the power to heal as well as inspire."  (Ruth Meredith)

The Stations are in the Nave, and online on our website

News from the Household of Canterbury

Albuquerque Faithworks is Hiring a Social Worker!
Canterbury is part of a coalition of local churches that are teaming up to hire a social worker to support the churches' homeless outreach efforts. The group has received funding from various churches, written a mission statement, has attained 501(c)3 status, and is ready to hire the social worker. See the posting here. Thanks to Sally Barlow, Anne McCormick and Bob Moriarty, who have supported the startup of this collaborative.

Collecting YOUR stories of belonging to Canterbury!
Thanks to Ruth Meredith, we are collecting ‘foundation’ stories to use as a guide in creating our mission statement and to post on the Church website for potential Rectors and members to read.  The stories based on the prompts below represent the ways our lives are connected to each other and to God to form the foundation of Canterbury community.

Pick one of the story prompts. Write a very short [150 word max] story telling us about your experiences related to that prompt. Send your story [and a photo* if available] to Ruth ruthmrdth@gmail.com
  1. Tell us how Canterbury has helped you discern and use your spiritual gifts.
  2. Tell us how being a member of Canterbury has shaped your relationship with God and other people.
  3. Tell us what difference being a member of Canterbury makes in your life.
  4. Tell us why you are a member of Canterbury.
*If you need help with photos, please contact Ruth Meredith ruthmrdth@gmail.com.

Join the Canterbury Choir!
Fred Frahm writes: You are invited to join a choir being newly formed at Canterbury. My plan is to add choral music for the season of Easter at the 10 AM Eucharist. This ensemble will rehearse regularly on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 PM, and again on Sunday mornings from 9:10 to 9:35 AM. The choir will not be vested and will sit as usual with the congregation until they are called to gather at the appointed place to sing their anthem. Read more about this opportunity here!
