A Message from our Chair
                      
Welcome New SBRRB Members
 
            Recently, the Senate Committee on Energy, Economic Development, and Tourism, chaired by Senator Glenn Wakai, and vice chaired by Senator Brian Taniguchi, confirmed the gubernatorial nominations of two new SBRRB members, Mr. Jonathan Shick and Mr. James (Kimo) Lee. 

            Mr. Shick resides on Oahu and is the owner of Pono Consulting Group, LLC, a real estate development consulting firm.  Mr. Lee, from Hilo, Hawaii, works as the director of development at W.H. Shipman, Limited.  Please welcome Mr. Shick and Mr. Lee!

            In addition, current SBRRB members and Second Vice Chair, Mr. Garth Yamanaka, has been confirmed for another four-year term.

Did you know?

Why are Small Businesses important?

-Represent more than 98% of all businesses establishing in Hawaii

-Employees working in small businesses with less than 100 employees make up 57% of all employees in Hawaii
 
    Small businesses contribute to local economies by bringing growth and innovation to the community in which the business is established. Small businesses also help stimulate economic growth by providing employment opportunities to people who may not be employable by larger corporations.

2019 Legislative Update

 
        Senate Bill 1348 SD1 HD1, “Relating to the Small Business Regulatory Review Board” has been moving along through the legislative session. 

       This measure clarifies the intent of the SBRRB when reviewing state and county administrative rules that impact small business by removing “ordinances.”  The amendments of this measure are expected to clarify the SBRRB’s statute and verify the Board’s Legislative intended purview.

It’s not too late to let the SBRRB know if there are any bills going through the legislative session that may affect your small business that you would like us to review and provide testimony.  Please let us know.   
           
     Join the SBRRB and DBEDT staff at the 3rd annual Hawaii Small Business Conference in May at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului, Maui. 
 
    Sponsored by Maui Economic Development Board, this conference will not disappoint!  It will be packed with titillating business topics and exciting speakers to help improve upon customer service, assist in succession planning and preparing small business owners for retirement, and many other helpful topics.

2. New HAR Title 16, Corporate Governance Annual Disclosure, promulgated by Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA)

3. Amendments to HAR Chapter 16-185, Annual Audited Financial Reporting, promulgated by DCCA

4. Amendments to HAR Chapter 11-186, Certificate of Need Program, promulgated by Department of Health
