Dr. Bob Crouch, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for OIE, recently sat down with Eileen Watts Welch to interview her as she shared her, her father’s, and family’s history of contribution and service to the Durham community. The following podcast provides highlights from his interview with Eileen and the history of her iconic father Dr. Charles DeWitt Watts, the first Black surgeon to be certified in North Carolina and her fascinating family.

Eileen is currently the President of the Durham Colored Library, Inc. One of Durham’s oldest nonprofits, founded in 1913 by Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore. In the photo on the left she is seen holding the City of Medicine award presented to her father in October 1999. Listen to the podcast here.
