One of three libraries in the U.S....Wow!

As you know, we have been eager to share our recent grant awards but had to wait for the official announcements. In our last newsletter, I shared the news of our Teen Summer Learning grant.  If you missed that, you can read about it here.

Today, I am pleased to be able to share the last two exciting grant announcements!

They are both so amazing that I am unsure who should get top billing. One has a local connection and is all about science education and technological literacy, but one is national and all about books!  Curious yet? See below!
And if your librarians have seemed a little frantic and busy, you'll soon know why!

Please feel free to contact me any time at jperrin@townofjaffrey.com.
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie

Thank you, Millipore!

With the encouragement and support of our local Millipore Sigma, right here in Jaffrey, we applied for a grant for our STEAM Learning Program with the corporate office of Millipore, last fall.  We got the news in January, but just received the check today for $10,000!
What will it be used for?
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
Our STEAM Learning Program includes three major components that will be funded with this grant:
  • Sponsored Learning Assistants (aka Teen STEAM Assistants) – STEAM Assistants are local teens, to be employed by the library, specifically to support STEAM programming. (Look for job postings soon.)
  • Collaborative Learning Space - Some of our most popular programs have been family 3D printing instruction, computer classes, and author and scientist virtual visits for our youth book clubs.  As we expand these learning opportunities, we have been retrofitting our spaces to meet the needs of the community. In order to support STEAM learning, including our recent Code Club grant (from IMLS and Prenda), we will create a collaborative leaning space with a big screen TV (72”) that can be used for instruction, Code Club, virtual author visits, and online opportunities such as those offered by NASA.
  • Computer Technology/equipment to support programs - In order to provide the greatest opportunity to local youth, we need to expand our technology lineup to include additional Chromebooks, laptops, and iPads to be used in STEAM programs and for science education classes.
Thank you, Millipore!

We won Bookapalooza!
Thank you,
Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC)

From the official press release: "The Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC) has awarded the 2019 Bookapalooza Program to three libraries: McNary Community Library of Holbrook, Arizona; Jaffrey Public Library of Jaffrey, New Hampshire; and Lawrence County Public Library of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee....
The award includes a variety of materials from books to DVDs and audiobooks. These materials have been received at the ALSC office from publishers for selection committees to evaluate for awards and notables consideration. To make room for the next year’s publications, Bookapalooza was created to infuse three collections with new materials for children from birth through age 14.
“The committee was deeply moved by amount of need in many of the applications we received, and impressed by the many different ways applicants proposed to use and share the Bookapalooza materials in their communities,” said Ariana Hussain, Grant Administration Committee chair. “Our three recipients rose to the top because of the strength of their applications and the innovation, creativity, and extent of how they will use the materials to help them improve access and service to young readers.”

What does Bookapalooza mean for us?  25-40 boxes of brand new books, DVDs, and audiobooks for youth and teens! These materials will update our collection, and allow us to provide libraries and materials for groups like Shelter from the Storm, support our outreach programs, help to update the SAU Bookmobile, and support our book giveaways.

We are honored to be one of only three libraries to receive this beautiful gift of literacy for the community.

Thank you, ALSC!
