O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you.
Psalm 63:1

A Reflection from Saint Theophan the Recluse

You must descend from
your head into your heart.
At present your thoughts of God
are in your head. And God Godself is,
as it were, outside you, and
so our prayer and other spiritual exercises
remain exterior. Whilst you are still
in your head,
thoughts will not easily be subdued
but will always be whirling about,
like snow in winter
or clouds of mosquitoes in summer.

Saturday Yoga Class
This Saturday, March 23, 10:30-11:45 a.m., we will again offer Sacred Heart Yoga in the Chapel (fourth Saturday of the month; additional classes on April 27 and May 25 through the Spring). Sacred Heart Yoga combines heart-centered spoken prayer with gentle stretching movements and provides a pathway to inner peace, wisdom, divine guidance, wholeness, and an ever-deepening connection to God within. This form of yoga embodies the original Aramaic Lord's Prayer of Jesus and is often considered less physically demanding than hatha or vinyasa yoga, with which many people are more familiar. The class is led by Joan Loney, a certified Sacred Heart Yoga Instructor and friend of the parish. A $15 suggested donation will be welcome but don't let that keep you from coming to the class. Bring a yoga mat and wear light, comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement (we'll have some extra mats on hand if you don't have your own). A blanket and/or cushion are optional. All are welcome!

Dust Thou Art: A Lenten Study on Living and Dying Well
Wednesdays during Lent in the Parish Hall
As an Easter people, a people of hope, what does our faith tell us about death and dying? What did Jesus teach about eternal life? What does our tradition tell us about living well when "in the midst of life we are in death"? Join us this Lent for an illuminating and inspiring discussion of ultimate ends and new beginnings, deaths and rebirths, and the promise of new life in Christ. We begin each evening with a simple soup supper at 6:00 p.m. and will conclude with a simply liturgy just after 7:30 p.m. All are welcome!

Wednesday, March 27: Eternal Life
Led by the Rev. Kacei Conyers
What images come to your mind when you think of the afterlife? Do you think of fluffy clouds, seraphim and cherubim…or perhaps fiery engulfing flames and brimstone? Over time, Christians have developed rich artistic, theological and doctrinal interpretations of the afterlife. This evening we'll talk about our own understandings of the afterlife, and journey together through a brief sketch of the historical interpretations of heaven, Gehenna, and Sheol over time. Some questions we’ll ponder include: What do we believe? What do tradition, art and pop culture say about afterlife? What does the Bible say? What is the hope that Christ gives us in the face of death?

Details for remaining weeks can be found here

Beating Guns Event
In the wake of the horrific shootings in New Zealand last week, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Belmont is hosting a free event next Thursday March 28, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Shane Claiborne and Mike Martin, co-authors of Beating Guns: Hope for People Who Are Weary of Violence. Bestselling author and activist Claiborne, and Martin, a Mennonite pastor turned blacksmith, offer a Christian response to the crisis of gun violence, transcending the rhetoric of “thoughts and prayers” with concrete ways to address the problem. Join the journey to end gun violence, to see how we can change our culture and do something about the massive toll that gun violence takes on our country. Advanced registration is required: click here to make your reservation. A group of parishioners from Christ Church plan to attend this event and are arranging a carpool. Contact Marcene Van Dierendonck (mvd1131@aol.com) if you'd like a ride or want to connect with others heading up. Good Shepherd Episcopal Church is located at 1300 5th Avenue, Belmont, CA 94002.

Lent Fellowship Event:  Dessert and a Movie
It seems that giving up chocolate, or sweets, has become a common Lenten discipline. But what if chocolate made all the difference in a Lenten season? Come and see the story unfold in the 2000 film Chocolat, as an expert chocolatier opens a Chocolaterie in an uptight small French village just as Lent begins. Watch what happens in the village between the beginning of Lent and Easter; can chocolate be transformative? Bring a dessert, bottle of wine, or non-alcoholic drink to share, and join us on Saturday, March 30, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Screening of the movie Chocolat will start at 7:30 p.m. Chocolat is rated PG-13 for a scene of sensuality and some violence.

The Rite of Reconciliation
The Rite of Reconciliation, also known as "individual confession," is commended to Episcopalians as a regular part of our spiritual growth and development and is particularly recommended during Lent. Many aspects of this process are similar to the "taking of a personal inventory" central to 12-step programs. Confession is canonically and legally protected and anything disclosed in this sacramental conversation is held in the strictest of confidence. Rev. Claire would work closely with you in the next few weeks before hearing your confession during Holy Week. Please feel free to reach out to Rev. Claire with any questions or to learn more.

Website Assistance Needed
The parish website - www.ccla.us - is one of the primary ways people new to our community first encounter us, and also a way some members get information about ongoing programs and services. Currently, Rev. Claire and Deanne work together to update the site but we'd like to use it more effectively and are also considering some changes to the site in the not too distant future that might be beyond our scope of expertise. As such, we're looking for a member of the parish who has some familiarity with website building and maintenance, and a little time they'd be willing to volunteer to help us first keep it up to date and engaging and, second, move us toward a platform and format that might better meet our needs. If you are interested and available, or have other suggestions, please let Rev. Claire (claire@ccla.us) or Deanne (office@ccla.us) know.

Invitation to Memorial Planning
At last night's gathering of our Lenten Study Series, Dust Thou Art, Rev. Claire shared revised memorial planning sheets and encouraged all those present to either begin working on this themselves or schedule a time to meet with her, or her and Eric, to complete it together. The parish keeps records of preferences for memorial plans and other end of life concerns on file. Giving some thought to one's own memorial service can be a profoundly meaningful and reflective exercise, and is a tremendous gift to those who will be responsible for making these arrangements when you are no longer here. Click here to download a copy of the form. Hard copies will be available in the office. You can also contact Rev. Claire to schedule a time to work on this together.
