1790 - A poem by Simon Birchall.

Simon Birchall is a Poet, Teacher and Programme Manager for English at NewVIc.

This is a poem I wrote for my uncle, the most inspiring person I ever met and a devotee of the symphonies of Franz Josef Haydn.

Enjoying the soundtrack through
technology you could never have imagined.
I like to imagine you strolling through what is
now the opera house at Covent
garden,
down to the river. Bewigged, breeches and dressed
at the height of elegant fashion.

We all have a duty to combat knife crime.

Every morning, new headlines about stabbings involving young people fill me with sadness, disgust, and fear. Sadness for the people who have lost a loved one, disgust that a person can commit such a violent act against another human being and fear as I have two young children and I keep thinking are they safe? What should I do to make them safer?

NEWVIC: 8 VS. HARROW: 1

Men's 1st team footballers hammer Harrow

NewVIc cruised to emphatic 8-1 victory over Harrow College this week with one league game to spare.

NewVIc had to wait until the 35th-minute to break the deadlock with a penalty, but thereafter the floodgates opened with further strikes.

One quickly became two as Kledian lofted pass picked out Harnak in the area and he wriggled clear of three defenders before firing through the harrow goalkeeper legs.

Three minutes before the break Sagoe superb pass played Harnak into acres of space and the forward clinically added a third to leave harrow needing a Mountain to climb after halftime.

Halftime NewVIc 3-0 Harrow College

NewVIc added their fourth minutes after the break as Abdou evaded the offside trap and crossed for Kledian, who found the back of the net with a devastating first-time finish.

With harrow out on their feet, it was only a matter of time before NewVIc pulled further away with goal number five, Abdou getting in on the act on 71 minutes, stroking it home from an Ali cutback.

Harrow, however, pulled one back from a direct freekick after the NewVIc keeper made a costly error.

Things went from bad to worse for harrow when the defender flicked the goal past his own keeper.

Ousman and took just 14 minutes after coming on to get on the score sheet, taking Brandon’s through pass in his stride before rounding the goalkeeper. Harnak then put the icing on the cake, beating harrow goalkeeper at his near post to seal Newham overwhelming victory!!!

NEWVIC: 77 VS. RAINES: 103

Basketball Academy finds the going tough against a well-oiled Raines

The NewVIc Basketball Academy ended the league season in a much anticipated final game against Raines Foundation Upper.  Having lost the away leg by 30 points back in early January the squad were in need of some inspiration and the support of a home crowd if they were going to turn the tides of fortune.

The squad started strong in the first 4 minutes holding Raines to a level scoreline; however, some lapses in judgment and with an athletic Raines squad taking full advantage of every rebound the NewVIc boys were facing a 10 point deficit by the end of the starting quarter.

In the 2nd and 3rd quarters the NewVIc team held their own with just 3 and 5 point deficits in each quarter respectively, however cumulatively this meant the boys were 18 points down 77 – 59 going into the last 10 minutes.

In basketball, this isn’t an insurmountable target, but it wasn’t to be.  When the Raines no. 7 landed a spectacular dunk in the 7th-minute heads dropped, the crowd lost their mojo and the writing was on the wall.

Despite the win, there was once again some stand out performances with Lonuel sinking 12 points in the 1st quarter (27 overall), and Nihat swishing four 3 pointers out of nowhere in the 2nd quarter to equal captain Menelik’s 19 points throughout the game.

After a tough season with a number of coaching changes, new playbooks and new players being added to the squad throughout, the team are now looking forward to the end of season London 3v3 Champs on the 1st May and will now get their heads down so the 8 first-year students ensure they’re back in force next year, and the 3 second-year students achieve the best possible grades to give them long term playing opportunities at university.
