Nova News

Wakefield Community Safety 'Big Conversation'

Wakefield District Third Sector Community Safety 'Big Conversation' on Wednesday 20 March was a great success with 85% of participants scoring it at 8/10 or above. The event focused on how we can work together to impact upon the Community Safety Plan priorities.

Mark Burns-Williamson, WY Police & Crime Commissioner, set the partnership tone for the event via video, there was cross sector representation including businesses (Wakefield BID), Police and Fire Service, Elected Members, Wakefield and District Housing, Department of Work and Pensions, health organisations and many local charities and voluntary organisations.

Andy Simms of Spectrum is the Third Sector Representative on Wakefield’s Community Safety Partnership (CSP). Andy talked about his role and the importance of keeping him informed of what is happening in your communities so he can report on it at the CSP. You can do this by email through Nova info@nova-wd.org.uk or direct to Andy andrew.simms@spectrum-cic.nhs.uk.

We heard from partnership projects that are making a real difference in local areas:
  • Max’s Madcats & Poxon’s Predators – On the Warwick Estate, Knottingley
  • The Community Harmony Project – Ward 16
  • Well Women Centre – Liaison & Diversion Services and the Restore Project
  • Rosalie Ryrie Foundation – supporting people living with domestic abuse
The biggest positive of the event was that we were coming together to talk about these things, breaking through boundaries of sectors across all 6 priorities which are: hate crime, anti-social behaviour including arson, violent crime, burglary, domestic abuse, rape and sexual offences.

The message was ‘Better together with what we’ve got’, collaboration and communication is essential for impact and change but it can be difficult to identify what is out there. The discussions brought up the important link between health and wellbeing and community safety with possible partnership projects which could apply to the PCC's Safer Communities Fund for support and we will bring you information on these in due course.

If you need any other information about community safety and the third sector do contact either Andy Simms andrew.simms@spectrum-cic.nhs.uk or Mary Roche mary.roche@nova-wd.org.uk.

Carers Digital Inclusion Project – request for expertise

Connecting Communities is a new project between Wakefield Council and Community Anchor organisations in Wakefield District to work with partners (E.g. Carers Wakefield District, Connecting Care Hubs, Age UK, Alzheimers Society, Live Well Wakefield) to identify older, unpaid carers who would benefit from being able to use digital technology to meet their needs and to reduce social isolation. Community Anchor organisations are:
  • Community run and led
  • Rooted in a sense of place
  • Have multiple functions
  • Have a mission to improve the whole community and not just a part
  • Dynamic and evolving
While we have a lot of ideas, we would welcome the input of partners who have specific expertise in this field who would like to help to make this project a real success for carers and those they care for. If you are interested, please contact Mary Roche, Nova Adviser, Community and Enterprise Development by email mary.roche@nova-wd.org.uk or by calling 01924 367418.

Volunteers' Week 2019 - Let us know what you are doing!

We'd like everyone in Wakefield District to know what kinds of activities and events are taking place in Volunteers' Week 2019, which runs from 1-7 June 2019. If you have got things planned for Volunteers' Week, we'd be really grateful if you could complete this form (Word) and return to info@nova-wd.org.uk. We will then be creating a leaflet which holds all the Volunteers' Week information.

NCVO's new joint project with Acevo and Lloyds Bank Foundation

'Rebalancing the Relationship' is a new project exploring how large and small voluntary organisations, bidding to deliver services, can work better with and alongside one another. NCVO is taking on the 'Rebalancing the Relationship' project in partnership with ACEVO and Lloyds Bank Foundation to explore how the relationship between large and small voluntary organisations can be rebalanced, in order to deliver better services, strengthen communities and ensure equity of opportunity across the voluntary sector. Although the project will consider the wider commissioning environment, it will focus on organisations themselves taking action and ownership over what they themselves can do. For more information, please visit the NCVO website

Exciting, free opportunity for unpaid carers

Wakefield Council is working in partnership with Wakefield and District Housing to offer a comprehensive Care Link package for free to support informal/unpaid Carers for a three month period. Access to the three month free Care Link offer will allow Carers to receive practical support as well as referrals/signposting to relevant information and support. This will enable carers to:
  • have a life outside of caring
  • be assured that the cared for person is safe whilst they go about day to day business
  • be signposted to support/services earlier in their caring journey
  • manage the risk of Carer breakdown
  • manage their own health and wellbeing
  • care for longer, improving outcomes for the cared for and reducing pressures on health and care services
Additionally, Carers who live in Wakefield and District Housing properties will have access to the WDH Wellbeing Caseworkers, Mental Health Navigators and Cash Wise Advisors. The free Care Link scheme will be fully explained to Carers on application so that they understand how it works and will sign an agreement form detailing that Care Link is offered for a free month period only. Beyond that the service is available at a cost to the recipient. Professional judgement should be used to identify and refer those Carers who would benefit from the scheme, and will specifically target carers who would not be eligible for the Care Link via other work streams (i.e. Hospital to Home). Referrals can be made via telephone by calling 01977 788000 or by completing the referral form (Word) and emailing to carelink.partners@wdh.cjsm.net. This is a secure email address. Alternatively, Wakefield Council colleagues can send referrals via Cryptshare and email direct to carelinkpartners@wdh.co.uk. For further information, please contact the Care Link Team on 01977 788000 or email carelink@wdh.co.uk.
