The Fledgling--Week of March 29, 2019

From Mother Megan:

We have gotten to that point in winter when I unabashedly stare at the crocuses in my neighbor's yard, willing them to bloom, and wear my lighter coat, despite the chilly wind, just to lure spring out of hiding.

There is actually a liturgical name for this phenomenon, believe it or not!  It's called Laetare Sunday--or Refreshment Sunday.  During both Advent and Lent, the medieval church spent the season repenting and fasting.  However, as the season drew on, one Sunday was set aside to lighten things up a bit.  So, on the third Sunday of Advent, we wear pink, and light the rose candle.  And on the fourth Sunday of Lent, we do the same.

This is no longer quite the case--nowadays, we no longer forbid music during all of Lent.  We no longer allow servants and other workers only one day a year to return home to visit their mothers (another tradition of Laetare Sunday).  However, I think the idea of a glimpse of the long-desired end of waiting is still with us.  Lent is powerful, but we are helped to maintain our focus on God and our relationship with the divine by the remembrance that something truly wondrous is just around the corner.  Even in the midst of winter, spring is coming.  Even in the midst of Lent, Easter is waiting.  Laetare!

If you have a submission to the Fledgling, send it to the office by Thursday morning for inclusion on Friday.  Bulletin announcements should be into the office by Wednesday morning.
  • If you know of someone who would like to receive the Fledgling, please send their email to the office.

Prayer for the week

Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

  • Open Doors is a new effort spearheaded by the Vestry, to open the Sanctuary during the hours Loaves and Fishes serves.  We want our church to be a welcoming space for whoever needs to pray.  Would you like to volunteer to staff the Nave during this time?  Talk to Matthew Sanaker or Mtr Megan to sign up.

  • Don't forget to vote every day at Lent Madness! Learn about different saints, and cheer your favorite on to victory.

It's almost here!!!

Laundry Love will begin operations on April 8th!  If you'd like to sign up, and you have been trained, head to SignUp Genius and put your name down for a slot or two.  If you haven't been trained, talk to Stephanie Nevels, Pam Talbott, or Mtr Megan for a quick primer on what to do.

Ongoing Concerns:

Holy Land Pilgrimage!  In 2020, Mtr Megan will lead a pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine from January 29-February 10.  We will go to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Galilee, and all the places we read about in the Gospels.  Come and see the land that formed our faith, and those who keep it alive today!  Email Mtr Megan for more information.

COFFEE HOUR We need people to sign up to host coffee hour after the 10:30 am service. It doesn't need to be elaborate, just an opportunity for parish fellowship and to welcome newcomers. A few parishioners/ families hosting together makes it even easier. Please consider signing up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish House. Sara and Pam will happily give you pointers!

ADULT FORUM Our Adult Forum book study for Lent is a reading and discussion of "Short Stories by Jesus, The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi" by Amy-Jill Levine, published by Harper, 2014.

CHANCEL CHOIR welcomes new members as we prepare for Lent/ Holy Week/ Easter. We rehearse together Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, and sing weekly in worship offering a variety of anthems, psalms, service settings and hymns. For more information, please speak with Organist Karen Hindenlang after any service.
