Introducing

Dancing While Black: Black Bodies | White Boxes

Angela's Pulse Inaugural Digital Journal

This inaugural issue of Dancing While Black’s digital journal was born from collective visioning and laboring, two practices essential for building both a dance and a community. Building community is a creative act. More than three dozen artists and visionaries contributed to this work, which we’ve been dreaming, researching, plotting, and pulling together over the course of the past three years.

VISIONING RETREATS

What nourishes you? What are you dreaming of?

The past, the present, the future simultaneously communing in one space
The space of us
For we are space, that which we hold for each other, ourselves and those we have yet to meet
-Except of Visioning Retreat reflection by Joya Powell
This season we've embarked on a series of

Angela's Pulse Visioning Retreats:

In October of 2018, the Angela's Pulse Team met to reflect on the lessons and successes of the past season (one that was full of producing!), and vision for the future of Angela's Pulse.

In January we gathered a group of Angela's Pulse core collaborators to dive into Engagement and Collaborative Process.

In February a cohort of past Dancing While Black Fellows came together to discuss Angela's Pulse Fellowship and Leadership.

This spring we aim to meet again to continue the conversations, organize new collaborative projects and enjoy each other's company!

FROM THE FISHTRAP

River woman, leaning on tree limb,

White flower floating on a rising tide.

Willow tree marks the spot.

Its roots remember children laughing.

And how the lovers danced here,

When the moon hung low in the night sky.

How the music played, traveling

On the water’s current, curving against the land,

Calling the people from their home lives

To see and be seen.
