March 25 City Council Meeting Preview

Here are a few items on the upcoming City Council meeting agenda:
  • Mayor Bennett will issue three proclamations: April 7-13 as Salem’s Arbor Week, April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, and April as Wyland Mayor’s Water Conservation Challenge Month.
  • Council will vote whether to approve a tax incentive program for a development of a mixed-use building on State Street that will contain 148 residential units, as well as retail space. Learn more→ 
  • Council will discuss whether to approve the City taking positions on a number of legislative bills, explore legislative methods to ensure protection of confidentiality of the victim and complainant in child abuse cases, and continue to watch Cap and Invest legislation for preservation of transportation funding and support for local government resilience programs in the 2019 Oregon Legislative Session. Can’t make it in person? Watch it live online. City Council meetings typically convene on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month. Meetings start at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers, Room 240 in the Salem Civic Center.

Reduce the Use of Plastic Carryout Bags

Beginning April 1, large retailers (stores over 10,000 square feet) in Salem will no longer provide plastic carryout bags at checkout. Shoppers will need to bring their own reusable bag or purchase a paper bag for five cents. Beginning September 1, 2019, all retailers will be required to follow the plastic bag ordinance.

Upcoming Annual Workshop for Landlords

​Attention rental property owners, property managers, onsite resident managers! Save April 17 and 18, 2019, for the next Salem Police Department Landlord Training. The workshop has a two-day format (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day) designed to teach participants how to reduce crime in and around rental properties, as well as how to establish and maintain a stable rental environment. The City of Salem and Oregon Department of Administrative Services have prepared hundreds of acres of industrial zoned property for development and new jobs, so when the businesses come, they build fast. Companies that have located on the site include Amazon, Home Depot RDC, Henningsen Cold Storage, and FedEx Ground. Learn more→

Weigh in on Multifamily Housing Design Concepts

The City wants your input on initial concepts for updating Salem's multifamily housing design regulations. Let us know what you think by taking this survey.

The survey, which will be open through April 5, is part of the City's Multifamily Housing Design project. The initial code concepts were presented at a February 27 public workshop where participants provided input in small groups. A summary of the workshop and presentation are available on the project website.

Qing Ming Open House

Date: Saturday, April 6, 2019, 11 a.m.
Location: Salem Pioneer Cemetery, Commercial St SE & Hoyt St SE

2019 Salem Recreation Guide Now Available

It’s time to come out and Play! Salem Parks and Recreation Services is pleased to announce that the 2019 Recreation Guide (in English and Spanish) is now available and includes a full line up for children, adults, and families. Select from a variety of activities that range from tennis and pickle ball, to run/walk events, free Movies in the Park, and even a LEGO Camp. This year, a $13 half marathon has also been added to the annual STRIDE Run/Walk series. Fee waivers are available for a number of these offerings.

You don’t have to live in Salem to take advantage of our activities. Help us to spread the word and remember to invite a friend. Learn more!

Library Improvements Revealed by Community Outreach Efforts

Salem Public Library has been listening to Library patrons and the community at large on their hopes for the upcoming Library building renovation ― including the design of Library space and services offered within its walls. Learn more→

Free English Classes Now Available at Salem Public Library

The Salem Public Library offers free, weekly English-as-a-second-language classes for the first time. Classes are open to learners of all skill levels. All classes are drop-in and will occur in the Plaza Room in the Library, located at 585 Liberty Street SE. Prospective students can register onsite. Learn more→

Virtual Incubation Program for Local Entrepreneurs

The City of Salem and Launch Mid-Valley have partnered with Oregon Technology Business Center (a startup incubator in Beaverton, Ore.), to offer a Virtual Incubation Program (VIP) to startups in Marion, Polk, and Yamhill counties for a reduced total price of $79. VIP is a popular six-week entrepreneurship course for startups that are building a growth company, meaning they are developing a product or service that will be sold regionally, nationally, or internationally, not just locally. Building Permits are Going 100 Percent Digital April 1

Starting April 1, all building plans must be submitted electronically to the City. That means paper plans for new buildings, remodels, and other construction projects will no longer be accepted. Learn more→

Our Salem: Today

We're working on a multi-year project to update the Salem Area Comprehensive Plan, which guides development in the Salem area. The first phase, called Our Salem: Today, is analyzing the existing conditions of the City and evaluating how Salem could grow under current policies.

March Edgewater Walking Cruise

On this month's walk, visit five Edgewater Little Free Libraries all in a 1.5 mile loop. These are cabinet-sized libraries where anyone can take or leave a book any time. Feel free to bring books to share if you like. Meet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, at Urban Grange Coffee, 1594 Edgewater Street NW. Back at Urban Grange, enjoy a free coffee and conversation. All are welcome.
