General Membership Meeting

Monday, April 1, 2019

6:00 – 8:30 pm

We have the room from 5:30 for set up and check-in.
The meeting will start at 6 pm.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Our next member meeting will be May 16, and we are planning to hold future member meetings on the third Thursday of the month.
PROGRAM

Fire chief to describe merger process of East Jefferson Fire District, Port Townsend

The Jefferson County Democrats have invited Chief Jim Walkowski of the East Jefferson County Fire District to describe the process for expanding the three-member Fire District Commission to include two Port Townsend representatives.

Walkowski will speak at 6 p.m. Monday, April 1, during the Democrats’ general membership meeting. Walkowski will also discuss the fire district’s mission, services and service area and take part in a question-and-answer session.

During the recent general election, the fire district got overwhelming support from county and city voters, 67 percent and 69.2 percent each, for merging with the City of Port Townsend. Besides improving efficiency of service, the merger will give Port Townsend residents equal representation on the Fire District Commission.

BUSINESS AGENDA

  • DRAFT minutes from the March 11, 2019 General Membership Meeting to be reviewed for approval.  Click here.
  • The resolution that was read at the last meeting supporting a primary for presidential delegate allocation has been pulled from consideration by the submitter and will not be voted on.
  • At our last member meeting a resolution supporting precinct caucuses was submitted by petition, debated, and defeated by a vote of the members. There is no need to debate this again.

All interested parties are encouraged to read the letter below from our two State Committee Representatives.

CAUCUS OR PRIMARY?

MAKE YOUR POSITION KNOWN!

This important message about our state delegate selection decision comes from our elected representatives  David Griffiths and Claire Roney. Your opinion is important. Please read and make your choice known by clicking on the links below.

As you are no doubt aware, one of the key issues currently facing our party, at the local and state levels, is the question of whether to continue using:

Precinct Level Caucuses or  a Primary Election...

as the first step in the process of allocating Washington state’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention in 2020.

You can read the two proposals, and some additional explanatory information, leave comments, and vote for the plan you prefer (not an official vote, more of an opinion poll) at https://waelectioncenter.com/.  The public comment period closes April 4th.

To give you more information for your consideration, we have included with this e-newsletter graphics showing, as simply as possible, how the caucus and primary plans would work.  These were sent out by the State Party Chair.

We are also including the full report from the Caucus Improvement Committee (CIC).  The CIC is a formal sub-committee of the WSDCC Rules Committee with the task of assessing and recommending potential changes to the caucus process.  The CIC’s proposal is currently under review by the State Party’s Rules and Affirmative Action Committees.

We hope all of this is useful to you, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts before we cast our official votes at the April 7th state meeting.  Please send your comments to info@jeffcodemocrats.com.

Sincerely,

David Griffiths

Claire Roney
