Mr Railston's bit...

On Thursday I had the pleasure of driving the Sea School Rangers to the conference at Wembury, on the South Coast. Jokingly, as I do, I asked why we were going to the other side of the county to a beach when we have our own fantastic one a few metres from school. The children went down to join other schools on the beach and I started researching curriculum development. My goal for the day, to crystallise my thoughts on our school curriculum. Through my reading I started to see a clear connection with the new curriculum requirements and what we provide already at CM. At lunch, I walked down to the beach to meet with the children and see what they had been doing. I was met with recounts of our children ‘knowing all the answers’ and the leaders of the activities feeding back how impressed they were with the knowledge and attitude of our children. People had said how good they looked in their Ranger hoodies and how enthusiastic they were to not only share their knowledge but to hold others to account with it (they had told off a group leader for using disposable plastic gloves!). Our aim has not been to grow an elite core of marine biologists but to instil a sense of community ownership of the CM coastline and use that knowledge to develop love and caring towards our home. The, now obvious, links with the development of character and confidence through ownership and expert knowledge can be grown through the curriculum and into the lives of the children of CM. From thinking we are designing a ‘new’ curriculum I have moved to appreciate the depth of learning that the children are exposed to through the classroom and Sea School and how proud I am of our children, staff and our community in supporting what is quite a priceless and quite unique offer we have at CM.
Over the next few months we will be having some meetings regarding curriculum development. If you have an interest (or know someone who may have an expertise) and want to get involved. Please let us know. Local geographers, historians and enthusiasts are very welcome.
In the last few days there has been a little rise in the behaviour issues on the playground. Unstructured time is always a challenging time for children as they try to apply rules but also have their own agenda... for example to play their favourite game or play with their best friend, who is playing with someone else. Developmentally, this time of year, Younger children start getting more confident and begin to play fight on the grass. Older children begin thinking about moving on. The nights are getting lighter, so children may be getting less sleep... there are lots of factors. If I could ask parents to keep talking to their children about the school rules, regardless of their behaviour, so that there is a constant dialogue around how to cope with different situations and children get used to discussing issues. The link to the behaviour policy on the website is here https://combemartin-sch.org/behaviour-at-cmps/ and the school rules are Be Safe, Be Ready and Be Respectful. Thank you.

We thank everyone involved for these very generous donations. The children are currently making thank you cards and letters to take to the Community Shop.

Regulations state that the vouchers can be used to pay for onsite and out of school hours childcare.  We regret to inform you that this rule prevents us from accepting childcare vouchers, as payment for school lunches, educational visits or residential trips, despite what some voucher companies are advertising to parents on their website.
Thank you
