While we were all watching hoops last night, the NCAA & a group of conferences asked Judge Wilken to reverse her ruling in the Alston case. Per USA Today's Berkowitz, "In a brief notice of appeal, the NCAA and the conferences wrote that they are seeking review of U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken’s injunction, her findings of fact and law, her earlier summary judgment ruling 'and all other orders, rulings, and decisions in this litigation.'" NCAA Chief Legal Officer Remy: "While the District Court upheld the distinction between full-time students who play college sports and professional athletes, it erred by giving itself authority to micromanage decisions about education-related support. We believe, and the Supreme Court has recognized, that NCAA member schools and conferences are best positioned to strengthen and revise their rules to better support student-athletes, rather than forcing these issues into continuous litigation." Plaintiff attorney Berman was none too pleased with the timing of the filing or its contents. In a note to Berkowitz, "The appeal belies the notion that they won and the fact that they try to bury this is an affront to the notion that this is an important issue not to be hidden on a Friday night. Shame on the NCAA. It shows the hypocrisy of the puppet masters who exploit these athletes." (link)
Looks like Cleveland State Senior Assoc. AD/SWA House-Browning & Assoc. AD for Student Services Worthington Wilson were the two Vikings leaders who resigned in connection to alleged drug use within the Swimming program that also led to the exit of HC Graham. Part of House-Browning's resignation letter, "proud of the contributions I have made to the University and the success of our student-athletes during my tenure." From the university, "In early February, allegations of drug use involving members of our men’s swimming and diving program were brought to our attention. Upon learning of these allegations, we conducted an internal review, determined they had merit and acted promptly to address them." (link)
Cal FB HC Wilcox on allegations of sexual harassment involving his program, "First and foremost, we take these allegations extremely seriously. It’s very concerning to hear of any type of behavior that someone would be subject to in that way. It’s not something that we would tolerate at our university or in our football program. It’s something that is really tough to hear. There’s going to be an investigation." On specific mention of his role in the situation, "I wish I could answer that question, but I can’t. I wish I could. I just can’t." (link)
This one caught many by surprise as new Vanderbilt AD Turner decided to go in a different direction with the Commodores MBB program. The bigger eye-opener was news Turner is moving to reassign former HC Drew within the department "to avoid paying his buyout." Turner reportedly met with Drew for the first time in his tenure to deliver the news, added as part of a statement, "Vanderbilt is committed to competing at the highest levels on and off the court." Drew was super active on social media yesterday, thanking fans & supporters for their positive sentiments, something you don't often see of a transitioning leader. Korn Ferry will assist VU with its new hire. (link, link, link - Drew's Twitter)
Outgoing Wake Forest AD Wellman announced MBB HC Manning will return for the 2019-20 season. Wellman: "Let me up front say that we are not where we want to be. We are not where we expect to be. Our fans and everyone associated with this program expects us to have a championship-caliber program. We believe we are capable of doing that. We have done that in the past. We’ll do it in the future." Notably on the involvement of incoming AD Currie, "As I said following the announcement of my retirement, this would be and was my decision." Wellman, when asked if he would have done anything differently with MBB in the last nine years, "Well, ultimately I’m responsible. When a program is not doing well, whether it’s out tennis or basketball program, I feel badly about it. I feel badly for the coaches, the athletes and the fans that we are not where we want to be. I feel the same frustrations that Danny and our fans feel about the competitiveness of our program. At the same time, I believe the solution to this is Danny continuing as our coach. I think that will prove out." Lots more. (link)
More Carousel: Reports have Siena AD D'Argenio promoting MBB AC Maciariello to the HC job. (link); Georgia State MBB HC Hunter after last night's NCAA Tourney loss to Houston, "Chances are I probably won’t be back at Georgia State. I’m going to take 48 hours to decide my future." (link); Longtime & highly-successful Belmont MBB HC Byrd contemplating retirement. (link); Iowa State MBB HC Prohm on speculation he'll be involved at his alma mater, Alabama, "There’s nothing to say. I want to be the best coach at Iowa State, that’s it. My athletic director (Jamie Pollard) is standing right there, he knows that. I love my job. I’m blessed to be here, first and foremost. I love Ames. There is no story. I’m trying to be the best coach at Iowa State and see if I can be here for a long, long time." (link); The Las Vegas Sun's Grimala wonders if the added cash UNLV AD Reed-Francois has to lure a new MBB HC could be coming from a shoe/apparel brand as the Rebels' current pact with Nike runs out on the 31st of May. (link)
"Partnering with Anthony Travel, who has demonstrated its prowess in athletics travel, allows our sport programs and coaching staffs to operate more efficiently along with benefiting our operating budget by providing the most cost-efficient travel options." That's Oklahoma AD Castiglione on why the Sooners have lined up with Anthony Travel. As part of the deal, OU will have two full-time on-site account managers to handle all its travel needs. (link)
UCLA AD Guerrero releases a statement on Operation Varsity Blues, "First and foremost, I understand and share the outrage that this news has sparked. The behavior described in the allegations is disturbing and unacceptable. As an athletic department, we pride ourselves on conducting our business with the utmost integrity. As I have said throughout my career, how we do things is just as important as the results we produce. Representing this university with character and integrity is paramount, not just for me, but for every coach, staff member and student-athlete." Guerrero continues with how the Bruins handle prospective student-athletes, which includes the eight-member Student-Athlete Admissions Committee, which he calls "among the most demanding and thorough in college athletics." That said, a full review is underway to strengthen the process. (link)
L.A. Times headliner Plashcke continues on why he's calling for USC AD Swann to be replaced, "It really was hard to do, because when you write, you really don't want to go there because you're dealing with a man's livelihood and this is just sports here. But, in this case, there was no choice because it was about more than sports. It's about USC the university and the city of Los Angeles. [...] I felt so strongly, that not only does the athletic department need to be reorganized, but specifically Lynn Swann needs to be fired. [...] He's not really a manager, a CEO of a billion-dollar operation like USC athletics is, he's a former football star who shakes hands and raises money. And that's not what they need." More. (link)
Kentucky AD Barnhart camps with Saturday Down South for a Q&A on the past decade with MBB HC Calipari at the helm in Lexington. Says the 2012 National Championship was his favorite memory so far, but also points to the care Cal shows his players and fellow HC of other sports in the Wildcats portfolio as highlights of the tenure. When asked about Cal's overall success in Lexington: "I think the argument about the school with the greatest tradition in college basketball begins and ends with the fact that Kentucky has had five different coaches win national championships. Adolph Rupp clearly started it all, but all of the coaches who have successfully followed have put their own stamp on this program, adding to its legacy in the process. I don’t think we started this with any other expectation than being fully ready to do everything we could to help John be the next coach to do that. Without a doubt, he has. He’s changed our program and college basketball in the process and he’s not done." More. (link)
Thursday's NCAA Tournament ratings showed "mixed results" according to Sports Media Watch. The first half of the primetime doubleheader grossed 10.49M viewers across CBS, TBS, TNT and TruTV, up 1% over last year. Kentucky-Abilene Christian on CBS led the way with 3.76M viewers, while Florida-Nevada on TNT saw 3.13M and Villanova-St. Mary's 2.91M on TBS. TruTV drew 697K with Gonzaga-Fairleigh Dickinson. The evening games drew a combined 9.4M viewers, down 2% year-over-year. Wofford-Seton Hall on CBS saw 3.96M, while Purdue-Old Dominion on TBS drew 1.48M and Michigan-Montana on TNT 1.95M. TruTV saw a 122% increase from last year with the 2.01M for Baylor-Syracuse. Murray State-Marquette was the top afternoon game on cable with 2.41M on TBS, up 53% from last year. LSU-Yale was the least-watched game with just 691K, but that was still a 61% jump from a year ago. (link)
CBS has added a dedicated camera crew to capture every moment of Duke MBB student-athlete Williamson's journey through March Madness. CBS Producer Wolff: "We hired a cameraman, a camera, a digital tape machine to record everything he does." From Duke's opening practice, Wolff commented, "We were recording his workout here today in the event something were to happen. We are monitoring Zion 24-7." Awful Announcing asks if the move is really the right positioning for the NCAA. (link)
North Dakota AD Chaves with his own Q&A, this one with the Grand Forks Herald. Chaves says he spent the first year in Grand Forks listening as much as possible and feels more prepared today to identify what will make the Fighting Hawks successful moving forward. Believes it is "imperative" to move out of Hyslop and Memorial, because "that will help all 17 programs. ... all of our student-athletes ... will benefit at our next evolution of what our facilities will look like." Expects Hockey to turn things around next year as the team has missed the past two NCAA Tournaments. On the potential of basketball thriving there: "I think basketball, historically, there's no reason basketball can't be incredibly competitive. My expectation is that we should always be vying in some way ... we should be going to Sioux Falls thinking we can win the tournament." The status of the Men's Golf team is still a work in progress, but the school is committed to the 2019-20 season. A bit more. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd writes on the transfer of Ohio State-to-Miami (FL) FB student-athlete Martell, does not believe it will lead to "college free agency." Dodd: "Working against the free agency argument: Waiver appeal approvals in FBS football have essentially stayed the same. Two-thirds of the football appeals were approved in the 2014-15 academic year. Four years later, that figure was 65 percent. In all sports, appeal waivers actually declined from 72 percent to 66 percent." Canes HC Diaz: "I didn't like the fact that somehow Tate was becoming the poster boy for supposedly bringing in free agency to college football because (a) he's not, and (b) people don't understand what the details were of all of these cases. They're all different." More. (link)
Facilities: The returning-after-40-years Boise State Baseball team will play at Memorial Stadium in 2020. It is home to the Boise Hawks. Broncos HC Van Tol: "We are excited to have a place to call home as we work through the process of developing something permanent." (link); Duke adds a new LED video scoreboard at baseball's Jack Coombs Field. The new outfield video display from Daktronics measures 23 feet high by 35 feet wide and features a 15HD pixel layout. (link); Rutgers AD Hobbs says the RWJ Barnabas Health Center will be ready in July and the Rodkin Center groundbreaking will be April 13. (link)
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of William & Mary junior football student-athlete Evans who was shot and killed on Thursday night in Norfolk. Tribe AD Huge: "Our university and athletics department are part of a tight knit community, and Nate's loss will be felt deeply. Most importantly, our thoughts and prayers are with Nate's family and friends during this difficult time." (link)
Also Noticed: South Carolina AD Tanner is warming up to the idea of putting some liquid fire into the bellies of fans at games, "I would have thought there are too many risks, caused too many problems but some of the facilities and venues are now serving alcohol throughout the stadium that the statistics are not bearing out that it’s causing tremendous problems. I’m a little more comfortable with the samples we have from other universities." (link); NFL Commish Goodell intimates his league needs a streaming partner for the Sunday Ticket package. (link); Growing OTT player DAZN revamps its pricing structure to $19.99 per month (from $9.99) or $99.99 for an annul pass. The different price points are designed to appeal to two distinctly different consumers.
