Operation Varsity Blues: Current Rhode Island Women's Tennis HC & former Georgetown boss Ernst, who is alleged to have played a role in getting students admitted as athletes during his time with the Hoyas, has resigned in Kingston. (link); Enigmatic media personality Sports by Brooks reports former USC FB HC & current Seattle Seahawks leader Carroll was a strategic partner of scheme ringleader Singer. (link); The NYT's Witz with a deep dive on former USC Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Administrative Officer/SWA Heinel. Former Trojans Cross Country HC Walsh on Heinel's handling of student-athlete admissions, "It didn’t matter how good people were. Coaches in different sports would commiserate: 'damn, this is tough.' I’d have said she was as hard as it gets." (link)
This got a ton of play around social media yesterday as Houston MBB HC Sampson detailed how some families of his student-athletes have asked if they can sleep on the floor of their son's hotel room to afford attending the NCAA Tournament. Sampson: "When you look around at how big this industry has become, why can't we figure that out? I'm not saying give them this or give them that. I'm saying when young men get to the NCAA Tournament, let's find a way to get their parents, their brothers and sisters, a plane ticket and a hotel room. I don't think that's asking too much." (link)
Timing & logistical issues at the XL Center in Hartford led to very few fans in the stands as Villanova & Saint Mary's tipped off on Thursday night. The two afternoon games - Florida State-Vermont & Murray State-Marquette - both ran long & the facility had little time to flip for the night session. 14,000 fans had to have tickets scanned & go through metal detectors in a scenario that many described as under staffed. Nova HC Wright: "You walk out here tonight, and there’s literally no one in the building. It’s bizarre. It’s really bizarre. ... We have a lot of guys in the NCAA Tournament for the first time thinking, 'This is the NCAA Tournament? There’s no one in the stands.'" (link)
The Carousel: Georgia State MBB HC Hunter could be headed to Tulane. (link); Alabama beat writer Hurt indicates the school has come to terms with MBB HC Johnson on his buyout agreement. (link); No verdict out of Nashville yet on the future of Vanderbilt WBB HC White. Plus, reputation & crisis management expert Cecil on former Commodores MBB HC Drew's social media engagement, "92.52 % of the audience sentiment toward Drew was positive and neutral with only 7.48% negative. We don’t typically see that on the day a coach is terminated. [...] It says a lot of about his reputation." (link); Buffalo MBB HC Oats will not be the next HC at UNLV. (link); Tennessee WBB failed to win 20 games for the first time in 43 years and HC Warlick says her future with the program is "out of my control." More: "I love this program. I love what it stands for. Do I want to continue coaching? Absolutely. That is not up to me. We’ve got to change our culture. There is parity in women’s basketball now." (link)
Auburn MBB HC Pearl raced to the Sweet 16 last night with a win over Kansas. Earlier in the week the first question Pearl faced during a media availability session was about two of his former ACs being involved in bribery scandals. Pearl: "I’ve spent three years out of the game. That’s what we want to focus on? That’s where you guys get in trouble, when you guys start focusing on — if you think those two assistant coaches define me, then you don’t know me. You can take that angle because it’s out there, but I don’t think that’s accurate." (link)
By the end of this academic year, Florida will have paid $1.083M in retention bonuses if all of the Gator HCs stay on the job. UF AD Stricklin: "That has two purposes. Give them a carrot to stick around and also get the contract to a certain level." Four coaches have 10-year contracts. More here on specifics, as well as Stricklin's and AD Emeritus Foley's stance on coaching contracts, including, "All of it is market based, look at what’s out there with other coaches. You want things that make sense. We don’t have the highest paid coach in any sport, but they are all in the top three or four." (link)
"I think some of the things I’ve cried wolf about before have kind of fallen on deaf ears. It’s not falling on deaf ears anymore. I’ve been way more vocal this offseason because the truth has got to come out. Our league is getting better and better – so the gap is definitely widening. ... I think everybody recognizes that coaching, playing and recruiting have got to be better, but support from the athletic director and administration – the superintendent and commandant – is also needed in order to compete at this level. ... There’s a certain level of support that we need if we want to be in this league. Now, the powers that be might not want to hear that, but this year I’m not holding anything back. There are things we need." That's Navy FB HC Niumatalolo on support for his program. Says some of the facilities issues are being addressed with improvements to Halsey Field House in the works. More Niumatalolo, who says if the administration cannot make a strong commitment to FB then he just as soon switch to the Patriot League: "Not everybody can get what football gets. That’s just the truth. I don’t want to hear that so and so is not getting Muscle Milk. My response is that so and so is not playing Notre Dame. We can’t worry about distributing things evenly. Those are the kinds of battles that I’ve been fighting behind the scenes for 12 years that nobody knows about." (link)
Liberty AD McCaw as his MBB Flames will take on Virginia Tech in a Round of 32 match-up today, "Liberty's not for everybody. We're unique in terms of our mission and the type of institution that we are. That doesn't appeal to everybody, but we're just focused on being the best version of ourselves that we can be. […] The opportunity to compete in the NCAA basketball tournament is just an enormous brand building opportunity. Certainly people in Virginia know about Liberty, and many people on the East Coast, but to have a story in the San Jose newspaper this week, and get coverage from ESPN and CBS, it's something that's very exciting for our program." (link)
The Athletic's Dochterman goes in on how the exit of former Iowa MBB HC Davis created a new framework of expectations for current Hawkeyes HCs. Iowa AD Barta on the challenge for FB HC Ferentz, "When you have success and you build something up, you basically set a new bar. When you’re in a position for a long time, winning at a certain level, maybe it gets boring? I say that tongue-in-cheek because it never gets boring to me. I know how hard it is. That’s where I see some similarity. Kirk had been here for a long time. He had raised the bar because of the success that he had had, and there’s that expectation that that has to happen and then some every year. That’s pretty hard to maintain." Former Hawks AD & current Big 12 Commish Bowlsby on letting Davis serve out the final year of his deal, "I think I probably realized the difficulty of having a lame-duck coach for an extended period of time. While it may have been the humanistic thing to do, from a programmatic efficiency standpoint, it could be argued that it wasn’t the best way to do it." Lots more. (link)
In his latest 'Early Entrants' column, John Wall Street says eBay is likely to spin off StubHub into two different companies with its foreign business, Ticketbis, getting its own mantle. Also of interest, "Vivid Seats is said to be sniffing around a potential acquisition." The same column mentions growing OTT player DAZN potentially acquiring Fox Sports Brazil. (link)
Also Noticed: Missouri will file its official written appeal to the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee on Monday. (link); Vermont Men's Hockey HC Sneddon will return for the third and final year on his contract. (link); The 2020 Olympic Wrestling Trials could be headed to Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center. An official announcement is expected soon. (link)
