Hawaii-Hilo AD Guillen voiced his disapproval of a recent proposal to cut $300K from the school's athletic budget as part of a larger effort to cut costs within the Hawaii System. The $300K figure has been routinely requested by UH-Hilo to assist with travel expenses; however, past appropriations have not been issued on a recurring basis. Guillen told the Hawaii Tribune Herald that the proposed cut, if approved, would be "devastating" given that travel expenses can be four to five times greater for the Vulcans: “We have unique costs here in Hawaii that schools on the mainland don’t have. … $300,000 is very, very significant to us." As part of a rebranding effort, Shaw unveiled a new logo designed by Phoenix Design Works. The logo, which honors the “fierce, competitive and focused spirit of the Shaw Bears,” was developed following focus groups with administrators, coaches, current and former S-As, and alumni. AD Carter: "The new logo gives us a fresh and distinctive look that captures the energy and pride of our programs. We are committed to building a brand that is a great representation of our university, our student-athletes and our alumni." (link)
Wouldn't be an off-season without rumors swirling about the next landing sport for Le Moyne MBB HC Beilein, who is reportedly among the individuals being considered for HC openings at Niagara (DI)Mercer (DI) and St. Joseph's (DI). (link, link)
In a Joplin Globe piece that applies DII bracketing principles to the DI MBB tourney, Northwest Missouri State MBB HC McCollum provides his thoughts on regionalization: "Now Division II, Mankato (the No. 8 seed at Maryville) is really good. Southern Nazarene (the 5 seed who lost to the Bearcats in the semifinals) might be a top-10 team in the country legitimately. I think Missouri Southern is a top-10 team in the country, and I feel like we are. And that's in your same region. That's how the tournament works out in Division II, which makes it so much fun and so horrible all at once." (link)
After court decals at Evansville's Ford Center were criticized for being too slippery during the OVC (DI) hoops championships two weeks ago, the NCAA and Evansville Sports Corporation are working to ensure that court decals don't pose a problem during the upcoming DII MBB Championship. Rather than use the allegedly problematic decals produced by industry leader Shafer Display, the NCAA has partnered with a different, to-date unnamed, company. ESC Exec. Dir. Marvin: “It is a different company and we’ll see what the impact of that is. We think it’ll be a very good setup for the Elite Eight and everything should go smooth.” (link)
Vivature - Expert Healthcare Management
Check this out...a massive Gallup survey from 2014 that received input from 2M employees & more than 300K business units found "a company’s productivity depends, to a high degree, on the quality of its managers." Ok, no surprise there. But, consider this, "The study showed that managers didn’t just influence the results their teams achieved, they explained a full 70% of the variance. In other words, if it’s a superior team you’re after, hiring the right manager is nearly three-fourths of the battle." WSJ's Walker continues on key hiring practices to identify the right managers who can fully engage their teams, of note, "One highly questionable tradition is the persistent urge to promote superstars into management roles. A growing body of evidence suggests there’s a weak correlation between an employee’s isolated talent and their leadership ability, and that quiet, selfless, middling performers often would be better choices. Gallup advises companies to seek out managers who infect their teams with a sense of purpose and function more like 'coaches' than conventional top-down bosses." More. (link)
