Hi <<First Name>>,

I’ve been thinking about wi-fi a lot lately ….

because my old desktop computer crashed. It was the only device on our home network that was actually wired to the modem/router. I didn’t use it much . . . except to store all our files. I always felt like the desktop was our main hub and that those files were more secure because they were on a computer that was actually attached or grounded to something tangible rather than invisibly connected with wi-fi! Luckily all our files were recoverable and (after a week of technical floundering), I have everything backed up and stored on a new network drive.

Maybe that feeling is a holdover from the days when we always had a corded phone. Even if the electricity went out, there was still the chance that the corded phone would work. It was like a safety net. We actually have one corded phone in our home today (yes, they still exist), although now it works through fiber optics and loses power if the electricity goes out.

What is wi-fi anyway? It is “a facility allowing computers, smartphones, or other devices to connect to the Internet or communicate with one another wirelessly within a particular area,” like our home, for example. We are becoming more and more dependent on wi-fi. And, honestly, the capabilities of communicating and searching and streaming and listening and watching are truly amazing in our wireless society!

As I was pondering all of this, I realized that being connected or grounded in something is like a security blanket. However, sometimes we have to let go of the security blanket to move forward. In order for us to embrace and utilize all the benefits of new technology, we had to choose to give up having a wired desktop computer and a home phone independent of the wiles of electricity.

Faith often works the same way. We want something tangible to hold us secure, but many times we have to step out in faith without being able to see the end result. We have to let go of the cord.

Remember how afraid the disciples were when they saw Jesus walking on the water? Even after they knew it was him, only one was willing to step out of the boat – Peter was able to walk on water until he lost his focus on the Lord. When he began to fall, the Lord reached out and caught him. The other disciples stayed grounded in the boat. [Matthew 14:22-33]

Like wi-fi, faith is invisible, yet it directly connects us to The Power Source and allows us to step out into the unknown with full assurance that He will catch us if we falter.

What “cord” are you holding on to? Is it time for you to take a step of faith and let go of your security blanket? Is it time for you to get out of the boat?

Blessings,
Melissa
