MARCH 2019 :  Developing a better future in a hectic world

Living in the midst of a hectic world, sometimes a deeply troubled world, we seek for ways to make it a better place. We know that our higher qualities, our Higher-self, needs to be present in attempts to resolve problems with others, or to gain an understanding of the causes of social ills. Many ways to do this can be developed out the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. This month I’d like to mention just two dynamics that assist the Higher-self to become more a part of our life, dynamics that are quietly working away in the background of our lives. In a talk from 1905, Rudolf Steiner told his Theosophical audience that in the wisdom, the books, the teachings, of initiates and sages, our own Higher-self is present, 

“…from the word of the initiate, my Higher-self is speaking to me…in the eternal sentences you find in Light on the Path or in the New Testament, and in the sacred writings of great Sages, your own (Higher) Self speaks to you”. 

So, we can live our lives, incorporating quiet study into our week, and through this, our Higher-self is gradually being born in us. (The 1905 lecture is published The Two Gems from Rudolf Steiner, see below for a link to this booklet.)

Another, quite different dynamic is mentioned by Rudolf Steiner in the beginning of his great cosmological book, An Outline of Esoteric Science. Here we are informed about the outcome of studying this cosmology, this immense vista as to how Creation came about, for our next incarnation, The effect of such spiritual effort is that we will have evolved towards a Higher-self, in particular,  a clairvoyant capacity. With this higher consciousness, our souls will be imbued with wisdom, and we can help to spread interest in a more ethical and holistic society. This second dynamic is obviously a slow, long-term process, but a process which offers the promise of a golden future; a future based on a real foundation of wisdom having being integrated into the soul.
